Photo: Joe Mabel via Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Peter Beinart favors\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2020\/07\/09\/new-york-times-beinart-op-ed-calling-for-end-of-israel-met-with-scorn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eliminating Israel<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, says it\u2019s \u201c<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/04\/01\/beinart-is-back-at-new-york-times-with-column-assailing-defense-contractor-work-as-unethical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>unethica<\/strong><\/span>l<\/a>\u201d for former or future government officials to work for a defense contractor or a think tank funded by one, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/09\/opinion\/iran-deal-irgc-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insists<\/a>\u00a0\u201cthere was no good reason to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>, for its part, has gone beyond merely publishing all these extreme views under Beinart\u2019s byline on its opinion pages \u2014 it\u2019s now regularly turning to Beinart as an expert analyst about the American Jewish community in the paper\u2019s news columns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A recent\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/13\/nyregion\/desantis-jewish-museum-tikvah.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news article<\/a>\u00a0about a Jewish conservative conference featuring Florida Governor Ron DeSantis that was relocated from the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York included two paragraphs from Beinart:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cAs American domestic politics has become more and more ferociously polarized, and increasingly as people see conservatives not just as different but fundamentally anti-democratic or illiberal or authoritarian or racist, holding together this big tent is really, really difficult,\u201d said Peter Beinart, a writer and editor-at-large for\u00a0<em>Jewish Currents<\/em>, a progressive magazine, who also writes for\u00a0<em>The New York Times<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAny institution that is built today on the need to serve both conservatives and progressives, whether it is the N.F.L. or a Jewish museum or anything else, is finding that work harder and harder to do,\u201d Mr. Beinart said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Another\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0news article published earlier this year, about a personnel issue at Westchester County Reform synagogue, included four paragraphs of Beinart:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Peter Beinart, a Jewish writer who argues in favor of creating a single democratic state in Israel and the Palestinian territories, said younger American Jews have seen \u201ca different snippet of history,\u201d resulting in different attitudes than their parents and grandparents when it comes to Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cFor older American Jews it was easier to see Israel as a David versus an Arab Goliath,\u201d he said. But younger people \u201care more likely to see Israel as a regional superpower that is fundamentally confronting the Palestinians, who are a stateless population that lack in various ways basic rights.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Mr. Beinart is one of 78 Jewish writers, academics and activists who signed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sandervswrt.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a public letter<\/a>\u00a0in support of Ms. Sander. He said he thought Jewish institutions should welcome people who hold a wide range of views about Israel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>\u201cWhat I think synagogues need to do is host these conversations,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cThey need to be places for people who have strong views and for people who, frankly, don\u2019t know what they really think, which is also a lot of people.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Both\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0articles were by a reporter named Liam Stack. Maybe Stack\u2019s editors could rein him in a bit? If the news articles about Jewish issues are going to be quoting\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0opinion column writers, readers would be better served if the reporters would dial up Bret Stephens rather than Beinart. Stephens is certainly more in touch with the mainstream of American Jewish public opinion, rather than the far Beinart fringe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Heck, the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0might even mix things up a bit by seeking expert perspective from someone who doesn\u2019t already have a regular op-ed platform there \u2014 say, Jodi Rudoren, or Sylvia Barack Fishman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The idea that every\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0article about a New York Jewish communal controversy needs to include Peter Beinart\u2019s wisdom on the matter is just weird. The paper\u2019s traditional call for context in these sorts of situations has been to Samuel Heilman or Jonathan Sarna, or, back when he was still with us, Egon Mayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Why should the newspaper\u2019s go-to-talking head expert on Jewish communal controversies be someone, such as Beinart, whose perspective on the issues is so far outside the mainstream? It\u2019s either that the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0journalists agree with Beinart \u2014 such expert quotes are a common guise for reporters and editors to insert their own opinions into news articles \u2014 or the journalists think their target audience agrees with Beinart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I\u2019m not calling for a ban on Beinart. But it sure is strange to see the news columns of the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0relying so heavily on him for perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em><strong>Ira Stoll<\/strong> was managing editor of\u00a0The Forward\u00a0and North American editor of\u00a0The Jerusalem Post.
