Photo: \u05e1\u05d9\u05e8\u05e7\u05d5\u05e0\u05d9\u05e8\u05dc\u05d4\/Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Uri Zohar, an Israeli filmmaker who wrote, directed and starred in cult films before becoming an ultra-Orthodox rabbi, died on Thursday at the age of 86, Israel\u2019s Ministry of Culture and Sports announced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A native of Tel Aviv, Zohar served in an army entertainment troupe while serving in the Israel Defense Forces. He was an icon in Israel\u2019s culture scene in the 1960s and 1970s, with film credits including \u201cHole in the Moon,\u201d \u201cThree Days and a Child,\u201d \u201cEvery Bastard a King,\u201d \u201cBig Eyes\u201d and \u201cPeeping Toms\u201d (\u201cMetzitzim\u201d). He also made a regular appearance on the Israeli sketch-comedy television show \u201cLool\u201d (\u201cCoop\u201d) and was awarded the Israel Prize for cinema in 1976, which he declined.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThree Days and a Child\u201d was based on A.B. Yehoshua\u2019s novel of the same name, and became an Israeli classic. Its star, playwright and actor Oded Kotlet, won the award for best actor at the 1967 Cannes Film Festival and the film was also nominated for a Palme d\u2019Or.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">After Zohar\u2019s passing, Kotlet told Israel\u2019s&nbsp;<em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mako.co.il\/news-israel\/2022_q2\/Article-2270e430e442181027.htm?sCh=31750a2610f26110&amp;pId=173113802\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">N12<\/a>,<\/em>&nbsp;\u201cMy great artistic memory of him is being a director with an extraordinary talent for cinema. He could have skyrocketed in my humble opinion if he had continued, deepened and qualified, but he chose a different path.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__large__nEccO body__base__22dCE body__large_body__FV5_X article-body__element__2p5pI\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-testid=\"paragraph-2\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the late 1970s, Zohar grew more religious, ultimately leaving his life in the arts to become an ultra-Orthodox rabbi in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/naftalibennett\/status\/1532295135773569024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eulogized<\/a>&nbsp;Zohar following his death by calling him \u201can integral part of Israeliness in all its shades, a rooted and thorny accumulation with a huge spirit world and a beating Jewish heart.\u201d He also said that Zohar \u201cbrought hearts together in pleasant ways.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israeli President Isaac Herzog called Zohar a \u201cman of culture and Torah,\u201d one who \u201cmade an important contribution to the cultural and spiritual assets of the State of Israel \u2014 a contribution that will not be forgotten.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">At Zohar\u2019s funeral on Thursday, family members spoke of his dedication to Torah and prayer, and his love of all Jews. One of his sons pledged to keep Zohar\u2019s memory alive, saying, \u201cWe are not parting from you, we will try to revive you.
