Television personality Kathie Lee Gifford became a first-time grandmother on Tuesday and said she wants her grandchild to call her \u201cBubbie,\u201d after an Israeli woman gave her the idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gifford\u2019s gushed about her new grandson Frank Michael \u2014 named after her late husband, former NFL legend Frank Gifford \u2014 when she called into \u201cToday with Hoda & Jenna\u201d on Wednesday and explained the choice of moniker to the show\u2019s co-hosts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have a dear friend down here and his Israeli mother, I asked her, \u2018What\u2019s a good word for a Jewish grandmother?\u2019 \u201d the former \u201cToday\u201d co-host, whose father has Russian-Jewish roots, said<\/a> live on air. \u201cAnd she goes, \u2018Bubbalah. It\u2019s Bubbie.\u2019 It\u2019s a Yiddish word \u2026 and it means dearest one, like cherished one. And the little kid only goes \u2018ba ba ba ba ba\u2019 anyway, so I think it\u2019s going to be easy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t give anybody a choice of what they\u2019re going to call me. I took the matters into my own hands,\u201d added Gifford, who previously hosted \u201cLive! with Regis and Kathie Lee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Gifford, whose maiden name is Epstein, told CNN<\/em>\u2018s Larry King in 2000, \u201cMy father\u2019s Jewish by birth and by race and blood. My mom was raised Christian, and we were raised in a godly home\u2026 We didn\u2019t go to synagogue, but I was raised with many Jewish traditions and raised to be very grateful for my Jewish heritage.\u201d She also admitted on the \u201cToday\u201d show once that she would like to attend Yeshiva University in New York City and be ordained as a rabbi.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
