Photo: Wikimedia Commons<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">On June 18, 2022, the North Carolina Democratic Party&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/nc-democratic-party-under-fire-for-anti-israel-party-platform-resolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.carolinajournal.com\/nc-democratic-party-under-fire-for-anti-israel-party-platform-resolutions\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181565000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3YakepKIR1sseKmaLDk0ee\">considered<\/a>&nbsp;adopting three anti-Israel&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RESOLUTIONS-REPORT-RESOLTUIONS-PLATFORM-COMMITTEE-_-FINAL-2022-1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RESOLUTIONS-REPORT-RESOLTUIONS-PLATFORM-COMMITTEE-_-FINAL-2022-1-1.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181565000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3NH6riP4k49BVhtUZVqJjj\">resolutions<\/a>&nbsp;presented at their party convention in Durham.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I interviewed a high ranking official in the NC Democratic Party, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. According to the official and corroborated by others, two of three anti-Israel&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RESOLUTIONS-REPORT-RESOLTUIONS-PLATFORM-COMMITTEE-_-FINAL-2022-1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RESOLUTIONS-REPORT-RESOLTUIONS-PLATFORM-COMMITTEE-_-FINAL-2022-1-1.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181565000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3NH6riP4k49BVhtUZVqJjj\">resolutions<\/a>&nbsp;passed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The two that passed are titled \u201cA Resolution in Support of Human Rights in Israel\/Palestine,\u201d which calls on sanctioning Israel, and \u201cResolution for an Independent Investigation of the Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The anti-Israel resolution that did not pass is titled \u201cResolution to Commemorate May 15 as Nakba Remembrance Day.\u201d This resolution was considered inflammatory and was sent back to committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The official told me that the three anti-Israel resolutions are antisemitic and did not mention Palestinian terrorism, or the terrible oppression of the Palestinian people by Hamas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The official and a number of active Democrats have also pointed out that the NC Democratic Party convention was held on a Saturday, which is Shabbat, the Jewish day of rest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The North Carolina Jewish Clergy Association, a well respected organization of rabbis and cantors that includes progressive Democrats, published a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid029mZGzetCdHVsEywYpEDfFBHnxd19peXSqAM3NXiRvibZvBoY7FHTBKL4fsQtdzrAl&amp;id=102018082515648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid%3Dpfbid029mZGzetCdHVsEywYpEDfFBHnxd19peXSqAM3NXiRvibZvBoY7FHTBKL4fsQtdzrAl%26id%3D102018082515648&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181565000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1NhbBdj-ECYOeobjNyv_-H\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;condemning the \u201cproblematic resolutions,\u201d stating, \u201csuch party stances often lead to the demonization of Jews and Israelis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The NC Democratic official told me, and multiple sources corroborate, that two of the resolutions were proposed by&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcncdp.org\/home\/officers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.pcncdp.org\/home\/officers&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181565000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0yNqdIZ0sZiiqsjqZYJ6ix\">Nazim Uddin,<\/a>&nbsp;who is the Director of Internal Communications of the Progressive Caucus of the NC Democratic Party. In a shocking June 19&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Nazim.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/voice4israel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Nazim.png&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181566000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0T48mmsLut84bQpBsHZKyI\">tweet<\/a>, Nazim Uddin referred to the North Carolina Jewish Clergy Association as \u201ca racist anti-Palestinian hate group.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">One of the resolutions was proposed by Soren Pedersen who is&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buncombedems.org\/affiliate-organizations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.buncombedems.org\/affiliate-organizations&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181566000&amp;usg=AOvVaw39sf0i8hRaINpRZOoxmqES\">president<\/a>&nbsp;of the Buncombe County Young Democrats. In 2018, Pedersen submitted&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211228191821\/https:\/\/www.buncombedems.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2018-Resolutions-Passed-Districts-10-and-11.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20211228191821\/https:\/\/www.buncombedems.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2018-Resolutions-Passed-Districts-10-and-11.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181566000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3px7wpaK2pLCXpi-2qQrhJ\">two anti-Israel resolutions<\/a>&nbsp;to the Buncombe County Democratic Party County Convention, one of which called for ending US aid to Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Many NC Democrats and leaders oppose the anti-Israel resolutions, yet the official said it is possible they would be adopted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">While many Democrats have expressed outrage over the three anti-Israel resolutions, there is great reluctance on the part of Democratic leaders to publicly discuss the issue out of concern that the NC Republican Party will use the issue to attack Democrats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In response to the anti-Israel resolutions, prominent Democrats are quickly organizing the North Carolina Democratic Party Jewish Caucus. Their press release explains, \u201cThere are fellow NC Democrats who we believe propose divisive and impolitic resolutions on world events not pertinent to the concerns of most voters. Some of these resolutions display a lack of empathy towards Jewish existential concerns including those with unbalanced views on Israel which is threatening to a traditional Democratic Party voter base.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Democratic Senate candidate Cheri Beasley told this newly forming caucus, \u201cI just want to be clear. I condemn in the strongest terms the anti-Israel NCDP [North Carolina Democratic Party] resolution[s] \u2026 I am disappointed. I am alarmed. I know it is divisive \u2026 I am just so sorry. \u2026 It is not at all what we stand for as Democrats.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The NC Democratic official I interviewed told me that Democratic Party activists who put forth such resolutions rarely have their pulse on the attitudes of the members at large, and that these anti-Israel resolutions are likely not representative of where most Democrats are statewide and nationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I pointed out to the party official that the&nbsp;<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RESOLUTIONS-REPORT-RESOLTUIONS-PLATFORM-COMMITTEE-_-FINAL-2022-1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ncdp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RESOLUTIONS-REPORT-RESOLTUIONS-PLATFORM-COMMITTEE-_-FINAL-2022-1-1.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1656734181566000&amp;usg=AOvVaw19J7RBwK3za6-Vjsjo0GHo\">2022 NC Democratic Party Resolutions Report<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, published in June, mentions Israel 40 times but does not mention inflation, gasoline prices, food prices, guns, or assault weapons a single time. The official responded that this is due, in part, to when the process began, which was back in February.
