But police and ushers hired by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/new-western-wall-heritage-center-dedicated-herzog-attends-685558\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Western Wall Heritage Foundation<\/a>, the state-funded group that manages the holy site, also did not appear to enforce Israel\u2019s law prohibiting the disturbance of prayers, a crime that can carry a penalty of up to three years in jail.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p>Thousands of black-attired young yeshiva students, both male and female, swarmed a group of about 100 women and a dozen men who accompanied them to the Western Wall, where traditional prayers were to take place at 7 a.m., ahead of the bat mitzvah of Lucia da Silva, 12, of Seattle, who came to Israel with her parents and godparents to celebrate the event.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother, Ada Danelo, had prepared Lucia ahead of time to think of the Western Wall as an arena. In this scenario, da Silva was the soccer star kicker, and the crowd included both hooligans and supporters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI looked at them as fans who came to cheer me on,\u201d Lucia said of the commotion that encircled her as she read from scripture at one of Judaism\u2019s holiest sites.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.jpost.com\/image\/upload\/f_auto,fl_lossy\/t_JD_ArticleMainImageFaceDetect\/509209\" width=\"100%\" \/><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>HAREDI PROTESTORS scuffle with police as the Women of the Wall movement holds Rosh Hodesh prayers at the Western Wall, in March. (credit: YONATAN SINDEL\/FLASH90)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Each month, a group called Women of the Wall attempts to read Torah at the Western Wall, where egalitarian prayer is prohibited except in a special section and women\u2019s prayer is circumscribed.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Ushers working for the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, a state-funded institution, attempted to direct the women into a dedicated lane leading to a fenced-in corral but Women of the Wall refused. Instead, they headed to the center of the women\u2019s section, adjacent to the men\u2019s section of the Kotel, as the wall is known in Hebrew, to hold their service.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Clutches of girls dressed in black set upon the women, calling them whores and heretics and hollering that they should burn in hell.\u00a0When confronted by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/opinion\/article-712276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women of the Wall<\/a>\u00a0activists and asked for their names, three of the girls in unison replied, \u201cI\u2019m a minor.\u201d Others blew whistles to prevent the women from praying out loud.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The women\u2019s section descends towards the wall. From the men\u2019s section, above the women, thousands of young men taunted them with coarse gestures and insults, and were occasionally herded away by police lines. Photographers practiced in the monthly ritual came equipped with noise blockers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>On the women&#8217;s side&#8230;<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Meanwhile, on the women\u2019s side, the Western Wall Foundation employed at least two videographers to film the women at prayer, with one of them, a man, hovering directly above them from a stool placed in the women\u2019s section. Asked about the offenses against freedom of worship at the wall, officer Eyal Abraham told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, \u201cI don\u2019t know anything about the law. Talk to the foundation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When asked about the commotion, which made any conventional sort of worship impossible, Eden Shimon, deputy head of operations for the Western Wall Foundation, replied \u201cGet out of my way. Sue me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Loudspeakers situated in the adjacent men\u2019s section, but facing over the women\u2019s section, blared prayers intended to drown out the women\u2019s voices.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"blockquote_cite_1f62cf02-5da4-2ff8-2526-0bf192ba4524\" class=\"blockquote_cite center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>\u201cGet out of my way. Sue me.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><cite>Eden Shimon<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Attorney Orly Erez-Likhovski, director of the Israel Religious Action Center and Women of the Wall\u2019s incoming chair, described the women\u2019s section as a \u201clawless pit devoid of any sort of rule.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThey see us as provocateurs,\u201d she said, indicating toward the police officers lingering near the entrance to the women\u2019s section, \u201cnot as citizens exercising their rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Anat Hoffman, the organization\u2019s current chair, protested that the police\u2019s refusal to demand identification from any of the aggressors rendered any future complaint moot. \u201cThe cases are closed before they\u2019re opened,\u201d Erez-Likhovski said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Recent months were marked by significant escalation in the violence directed at women and non-Orthodox Jews praying at the Wall. At least five bar mitzvah ceremonies held in the ostensibly egalitarian \u201cEzrat Israel\u201d southern section of the wall were targeted by violence in recent weeks, notably that of Seth Mann, of Las Vegas, whose mother, Sari Mann, is the director of Nevada\u2019s state AIPAC, the pro-Israel lobby.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a passionate essay published in the Times of Israel after the incident, Seth Mann\u2019s father Joel wrote that he was initially relieved when he saw police officers arrive to his son\u2019s ceremony, which was being ruined by haredi teenagers blowing whistles and yelling \u201cgoys\u201d at the celebrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cThe police did little to nothing to stop the disturbance and sometimes violent attacks that occurred. The Israeli Police stood there as the haredi teens attacked Jews,\u201d he wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cIt was at this moment that my heart broke,\u201d Mann went on. \u201cI realized that not even in the State of Israel, the homeland for the Jewish people, am I allowed to pray freely and safely. My son, on his Bar Mitzvah, is told he is not Jewish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Prime Minister Yair Lapid called the family to express his dismay, and later ordered that barriers separating men and women in traditional Jewish places of worship be prohibited in the egalitarian section of the Western Wall. The barriers, called mechitzas, have recently been used as instruments of violence against worshippers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In the chaos this Friday, one small figure appeared unfazed: Lucia da Silva, the slight but self-assured bat mitzvah girl, for whom this was the culmination of a full year of study of the sacred texts and of the Hebrew language. The bat mitzvah, she said, was among the highlights of her trip to Israel, along with the Dead Sea and the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"fake-br-for-article-body\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Back home in Seattle, Danelo said that she and her wife, Cara Stoddard, sometimes felt attacked for their Zionism.
