The head of the German federal government\u2019s office for combating antisemitism has vociferously condemned the Documenta festival of contemporary art in the city of Kassel over a series of scandals involving antisemitic works of art.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Documenta shows how completely unchecked Israel-related antisemitism came to Germany from another country,\u201d Felix Klein \u2014 the federal government\u2019s antisemitism commissioner \u2014 observed in a newspaper interview on Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Beset by widespread criticism of the antisemitic artworks<\/a><\/strong><\/span> that were either removed or haphazardly covered over at this year\u2019s festival \u2014 curated by ruangrupa, an Indonesian artists collective \u2014 Documenta\u2019s management team has faced severe criticism of its approach to antisemitism since January<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, when revelations of ruangrupa\u2019s support for the so-called \u201cBoycott, Divestment and Sanctions\u201d (BDS) campaign targeting Israel first emerged.<\/span><\/p>\n

Subsequently, the Documenta festival featured a mural containing classic antisemitic caricature<\/strong><\/span>s<\/a>, a triptych featuring a man wearing a kipah proffering large bags of money<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, a brochure featuring antisemitic drawings of Israeli soldiers<\/a> <\/strong><\/span>and a row over the statements of Hamja Ahsan, a British artist exhibiting at the festival, who praised the BDS movement and slammed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who canceled a visit<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to the festival in protest at the presence of antisemitic works, as a \u201cfascist pig.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Klein, some of the artworks \u201ccould also have been in the Nazi hate newspaper Der St\u00fcrmer<\/em>.\u201d He urged due consideration of \u201ccriminal consequences\u201d for the exhibition organizers. Antisemitic incitement and mocking or denying the Holocaust is illegal in Germany. In future, the federal government, which funds the festival, should have a greater role in organizing it, by appointing a supervisory board to review works proposed for exhibition, Klein said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Klein also urged the full implementation of the May 2019 resolution of the Bundestag<\/strong><\/span>,<\/a> Germany\u2019s parliament, that classified the BDS campaign as antisemitic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe must take action against the BDS movement with all political and social means,\u201d he declared.<\/span><\/p>\n

Klein further warned that antisemitic feeling could surge in Germany later this year, amid a growing economic crisis and shortages of heating fuel during the winter as a result of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, blaming Jews for crises is a pattern in Germany,\u201d Klein stated. \u201cYou can feel that something is brewing,\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
