Photo: Wikimedia Commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The president of University of Vermont (UVM) is denying&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/09\/13\/department-of-education-launch-investigation-into-antisemitism-allegations-at-university-of-vermont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">allegations<\/a>&nbsp;that it mishandled a series of reported antisemitic incidents that occurred in 2021<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Responding publicly to the charges made against the school for the first time, university president Suresh V. Garimella on Thursday accused the media of publishing an \u201cuninformed narrative\u201d and portraying UVM \u201cin a patently false light.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In August, the US Department of Education\u2019s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened a formal civil rights&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/docs\/investigations\/open-investigations\/tvi.html?queries%5Bstate%5D=VT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">investigation<\/a>&nbsp;on UVM based on a complaint filed by two Jewish advocacy groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Brandeis Center and Jewish on Campus, the groups which filed the complaint, allege that the university violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act when it punished no one after UVM\u2019s Hillel Center was reportedly vandalized and when Jewish students who embrace Zionism faced harassment by a teaching assistant and were expelled from student clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Garimella, however, maintained that no students reported being harassed by an anti-Israel teaching assistant and that the university \u201ctook prompt action to ensure that the objectionable statements did not adversely impact students.\u201d He also claimed that students threw rocks at the windows of UVM Hillel to awake a sleeping friend, and that the university was powerless to punish two student clubs for restricting membership from self-identified Zionists because the groups were unrecognized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cHe doesn\u2019t acknowledge or address the harassment that has been taking place on the campus,\u201d Brandeis Center president Alyza Lewin, a litigant in the complaint against UVM, told&nbsp;<em>The Algemeiner<\/em>&nbsp;on Thursday. \u201cHe\u2019s engaging in victim blaming instead of taking responsibility and correcting what is causing the hostile climate on the campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Garimella said that since the incidents of 2021, the university has expanded efforts to support Jewish students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cOur work in understanding and eliminating antisemitism will never be complete,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe will continue to learn and support UVM\u2019s Jewish community to ensure that any future incidents might occur will be addressed with immediacy and sensitivity to what they are experiencing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The opening of an OCR investigation is not an implication of guilt but an acknowledgement that civil rights violations are alleged to have been committed by an educational institution.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height: 15px; background: #d0e6fa; width: 100%;\">\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content-alignment\">\n<div id=\"watch-description\" class=\"yt-uix-button-panel\">\n<div id=\"watch-description-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><em>Zawarto\u015b\u0107 publikowanych artyku\u0142\u00f3w i materia\u0142\u00f3w nie reprezentuje pogl\u0105d\u00f3w ani opinii Reunion&#8217;68,<\/em><em><br \/>\nani te\u017c webmastera Blogu Reunion&#8217;68, chyba ze jest to wyra\u017anie zaznaczone.<br \/>\nTwoje uwagi, linki, w\u0142asne artyku\u0142y lub wiadomo\u015bci prze\u015blij na adres:<br \/>\n<\/em><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong><em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"mailto:webmaster@reunion68.com\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">webmaster@reunion68.com<\/span><\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr style=\"width: 100%;\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>University of Vermont Denies It Mishandled Alleged Antisemitic Incidents Dion J.
