How we can improve as individuals and as a community?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It seems like the media have their work cut out for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/2022-06\/Digital_News-Report_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2022 Reuters Institute Digital News report<\/a>, trust in news agencies has reached a seven-year low among Americans, steadily declining since 2017. Currently, it stands at only 26%. Another study published by&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/07\/21\/lets-look-trust-news-media-equal-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>found that, among US adults surveyed, only 16 and 11 percent have \u201ca great deal\u201d or \u201cquite a lot\u201d of confidence in newspapers and TV news, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The then-UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, illuminated the challenges facing the media in&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/statements-and-speeches\/2022\/06\/high-level-panel-discussion-countering-negative-impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a speech at the Human Rights Council some three months ago<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>We need to look at how best to contain the harms caused by disinformation, while addressing the underlying causes that give disinformation life and allow it to gain traction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For its part, the prestigious Pew Research Center&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2022\/01\/05\/trust-in-america-do-americans-trust-the-news-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recently stated<\/a>&nbsp;that the major causes of declining trust in the media are the shift to digital ad revenue, polarized news sources among Democrats and Republicans, and misinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Interestingly, while readers distrust news sources, they&nbsp;<em>do<\/em>&nbsp;trust organizations that align with their own opinions. As Olivier Knox from&nbsp;<em><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/07\/21\/lets-look-trust-news-media-equal-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;claimed: \u201cIt seems people loathe Congress but are fine with their own representative. It seems plausible that people trust where they get their news, but not where people they disagree with get theirs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">These biases, which affect journalists as well as their&nbsp;audiences, can possibly be attributed to certain psychological shortcuts. Readers are more likely to read and remember information congruent with previously held beliefs,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4908138\/#:~:text=Selective%20exposure%20is%20the%20phenomenon,dissonance%20(Festinger%2C%201962).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the National Institutes of Health (NIH) argues<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The NIH highlighted two biases that seemingly contribute to the deteriorating trust: confirmation bias and selective exposure bias:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Confirmation bias: \u201cIndividuals may\u2026 actively seek out and assign more weight or validity to information that supports their current attitude.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Selective exposure bias: \u201cPhenomenon whereby people choose to focus on information in their environment that is congruent with and confirms their current attitudes in order to avoid or reduce cognitive dissonance.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For readers, this translates to reading and remembering information they knew before \u2014 while disbelieving people who hold counter information from opposing viewpoints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The selective exposure bias furthermore affects the ability of journalists to report impartially. Subconsciously, the brain compares previous memories and knowledge with incoming information. This would mean that \u2014 either deliberately or mistakenly \u2014 reporters struggle to be perfectly impartial. HonestReporting has this year highlighted many journalists who have purposely skewed facts and neglected crucial context, including at the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/will-bbc-take-action-against-journalists-who-posted-antisemitic-anti-israel-tweets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC<\/a>,<em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/new-york-times-latest-hire-at-jerusalem-bureau-hiba-yazbek-scrubbed-twitter-account-of-anti-israel-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The New York Times<\/a><\/em>,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/honestreporting.com\/al-jazeera-puts-terror-teen-front-and-center-in-mangled-report-of-idf-raid-to-capture-palestinian-islamic-jihad-commander\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al Jazeera<\/a>, and others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The major challenge is the speed at which misinformation can spread. An&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2018\/study-twitter-false-news-travels-faster-true-stories-0308\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT study<\/a>&nbsp;of Twitter data found that fake news spreads six times quicker than factual news. A possible explanation is that false news is \u201cnovel\u201d and shocking, causing stronger emotional reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Soroush Vosoughi, a postdoc student and member of the research team at MIT, suggested that the \u201cmisinformation challenge\u201d has two angles: people who deliberately spread fake news and people who unknowingly spread it. Political information was the largest cluster of misinformation among the 126,000 samples of false news published on Twitter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">All in all, this can contribute to polarization and a lack of trust in the media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Steven Pinker, a Harvard psychology professor,&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/interactives\/2019\/how-to-fix-politics-in-america\/misinformation\/correct-for-the-medias-negativity-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mentions<\/a>&nbsp;that misinformation is also caused by \u201chuman negative biases.\u201d This refers to the brain\u2019s tendency to perceive threats over positive information, which causes journalists to over-report shocking and tragic events while under-reporting positive events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As the professor explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Bad things are sudden and newsworthy (a shooting rampage, a war, an epidemic), while good things are gradual and boring (a crime decline, a spreading peace, a longevity rise). The culture of journalists amplifies the negativity by dismissing positive developments as human-interest fluff, corporate PR or government propaganda.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">To prevent the spread of fake news and counter negative biases, he suggests journalists should give context to negative information by providing the long-term trends related to current incidents, as these trends tend to show improvement rather than things getting worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">By not posting fake news on social media, readers can contribute to the improvement of ethical journalism, which should uphold values of impartiality, truth, and transparency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Yet attempting to regain the public\u2019s trust in the media requires that journalists make a serious effort to put an end to misinformation and biased reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">First of all,&nbsp;news agencies bear a responsibility to hire only qualified journalists who do not have a history of antisemitism, anti-Israel bias, or connections to controversial pro-Palestinian groups. It is important to check the credentials, past stories, and resources used by reporters to validate their ability to report impartially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">To stop the spread of misinformation and biased reporting, journalists could moreover use the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpressinstitute.org\/journalism-essentials\/bias-objectivity\/tools-manage-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Press Institute<\/a>&nbsp;guidelines:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Periodically examine yourself for bias building up \u2014 understanding what your views are and why you have them is the best way to keep them under control.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Who do you personally like or dislike? Why?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>How might that be coloring your judgment?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Read through some of your stories and be self-critical.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Do any of them help you tell the story?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Are there any you believe you should not deal with?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Is there anything you should do in presenting any of these biases that will help the reader understand them?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What bias do I have going in that I should be wary of?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What are my points of ignorance going in that I need to note?<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The spread of misinformation begins with reporters, but is exacerbated by the public, in particular by social media users. The public can contribute to the media\u2019s improvement by following the steps listed by&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.sfu.ca\/help\/research-assistance\/fake-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Simon Fraser University<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The most important steps are to thoroughly check the source, read beyond the headlines (do not share an article without reading the contents), investigate the authors, and check the resources they used.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Rosh Hashanah and the days leading up to Yom Kippur are a time to reflect on the past year. What mistakes have we made? Where can we improve? How do we move toward a better version of ourselves? Journalists and readers each play an important role in the spread of misinformation and biased reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Awareness is the first step towards reinstating the values of ethical journalism that could eventually enable the public to trust the media more.
