Photo: Israel Police<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">With weeks left before Israel\u2019s next round of elections, Prime Minister Yair Lapid is appealing to the country\u2019s Arab minority by promising to fight a years-long crime wave that has bloodied their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In a video released in the lead up to elections in November, Lapid described \u201cthe fight against crime in the Arab sector\u201d as a main priority of his government, which would be intensified after elections. \u201cWe will make an effort that has never been made here, to invest in the personal security of the citizens of Israel \u2014 with an emphasis on Arab society,\u201d said the premier.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He pledged to \u201cinvest the necessary resources\u201d and \u201cbring the best people\u201d to tackle the core issues important to Arab society: \u201cThe education of your children; the creation of job opportunities, especially for youths; housing plans; and integration into public services.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cAfter years of neglect, Israel\u2019s Arab citizens deserve to have a government that works for them,\u201d said Lapid.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"post_content\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The appeal comes amid a crime wave affecting Arab Israeli society, which drew national attention last month following the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/09\/06\/mother-daughter-killed-amid-wave-of-violence-in-israels-arab-sector\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">murder<\/a>\u00a0of an Arab-Israeli woman and her teenage daughter in the central city of Lod.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A survey\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/abrahaminitiatives.org.il\/2022\/09\/23\/%d7%9e%d7%97%d7%a7%d7%a8-%d7%97%d7%93%d7%a9-%d7%9e%d7%a1%d7%a8-%d7%97%d7%99%d7%95%d7%91%d7%99-%d7%9e%d7%a6%d7%93-%d7%9c%d7%a4%d7%99%d7%93-%d7%9b%d7%9c%d7%a4%d7%99-%d7%94%d7%90%d7%96%d7%a8%d7%97%d7%99\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">released<\/a>\u00a0late last month by the Abraham Initiatives, a nonprofit that aims to improve Jewish-Arab relations in Israel, found that an appeal by Lapid to Arab voters could increase their turnout \u2014 which is\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.algemeiner.com\/2022\/08\/28\/survey-record-low-arab-turnout-expected-in-upcoming-israeli-elections-some-arab-support-for-likud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">expected<\/a>\u00a0to hit record lows \u2014 by some 22 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The crime wave has become a flashpoint issue in recent years, driving mass protests in Arab communities. Israel\u2019s Arab minority, which makes up some 21 percent of the population, faces a disproportionate risk of murder compared to Jews, who constitute a 74 percent majority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Between\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/fs.knesset.gov.il\/globaldocs\/MMM\/6c51dc26-d9ae-ea11-8107-00155d0aee38\/2_6c51dc26-d9ae-ea11-8107-00155d0aee38_11_15065.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015-2019<\/a>\u00a0in Israel, 56 percent of victims of crimes against the person \u2014 which encompasses violations ranging from threats to murder, attempted murder, and murder itself \u2014 were Jewish, while 44 percent were not, according to the Knesset Research and Information Center. The status quo appears to have impacted the sense of personal safety of Israeli Arabs, who were more than twice as likely to express a \u201cvery great or great\u201d fear of facing violence in their neighborhood in a 2021\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbs.gov.il\/he\/publications\/doclib\/2022\/1867\/t04_05.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey<\/a>\u00a0by Israel\u2019s Central Bureau of Statistics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Abraham Initiatives tallied 47 fatalities in Arab society in the first half of 2022, the majority men under 40 years old. 52 fatalities were recorded in the same period the previous year, which ultimately ended with 126 Arab Israelis killed for reasons related to crime and violence.
