inscriptions,&nbsp;the researchers discovered the graffiti bearing the name of the Swiss noble, who was dubbed a&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/christianworld\/article-715576\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knight of the Holy Sepulchre<\/a>&nbsp;following his pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1466.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">More than 40 inscriptions belonging to both Christian and Muslim pilgrims, in several languages, were discovered during the IAA&#8217;s project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The research results were announced in a conference titled New Archaeological Studies in Jerusalem and the Vicinity, jointly held with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Who was Adrian von Bubenberg?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Bubenberg, born in 1424, was labeled a Swiss national hero for military conquests across Europe, specifically in the Battle of Morat, fought as part of the Burgundian Wars of the 15th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">He died in 1479 and was buried in the Bern Minster, the cathedral of Switzerland&#8217;s de-facto capital Bern, where he was mayor for three separate terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A bronze monument displaying the likeness of von Bubenberg can be found in the Swiss capital&#8217;s old city, in the Bubenbergplatz Plaza, named after the Middle Ages nobleman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.jpost.com\/image\/upload\/f_auto,fl_lossy\/t_JD_ArticleMainImageFaceDetect\/517249\" width=\"100%\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>Statue of Adrian von Bubenberg, in Bern, Switzerland (credit: Wikimedia Commons)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Why was his name inscribed on the walls of King David&#8217;s Tomb?<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The IAA project leaders, Michael Chernin and Shai Halevi, explained that &#8220;in the Mamluk period [of control of the Land of Israel], the building complex adjacent to the traditional tomb of King David was owned by the monks of the&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/local-israel\/in-jerusalem\/christian-jerusalem-franciscan-friends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Franciscan Catholic Order<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;The building served as a monastery and a hostel for the Western pilgrims, who left their mark on the walls,&#8221; they said, noting that &#8220;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\/how-are-archaeologists-using-hi-tech-during-the-coronavirus-era-650245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">technological methods<\/a>&nbsp;developed today enable reading the faded inscriptions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">These technologies use multispectral photography, the IAA said.
