Photo: RabbiSacks.org.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The end of this month will mark 75 years since the passage of\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/United-Nations-Resolution-181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/United-Nations-Resolution-181&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2HmB7_ppZQIOVg8m_HlsYA\">UN Resolution 181<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0on November 29, 1947. This paved the way for a Jewish national homeland to be established \u2014 a nation-state among the family of nation-states that make up the United Nations. Israel came into being just under half a year later, on May 14, 1948, and the following year, on May 11, 1949, Israel was admitted into the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">For reasons that continue to defy logic, the Arabs of 1947 Palestine \u2014 bolstered by active encouragement from their Arab brethren in the Middle East and beyond \u2014 refused to consider any option which would enable the creation of a Jewish nation-state on land they believed belonged exclusively to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">As a result of this uncompromising stance that has continued to this day \u2014 and as a consequence of sustained military campaigns and terrorist violence against Israel and Jews over the many decades since 1947, all of it based on this uncompromising stance \u2014 there is still not a country called Palestine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And yet, despite the truth of these facts, the narrative one reads and hears in the mainstream media and from pro-Palestinian propagandists never reveals these critical details. The delegitimization of Israel relies on the spurious mantra that Israel was never legitimate, and that the Jewish nation has no valid claim to a country in the land that was previously \u201cPalestine.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And, as if this is not enough, the anti-Israel narrative maintains that the Arabs of Palestine were illegally dispossessed and that they remain dispossessed \u2014 all of them victims of a colonial enterprise executed by non-indigenous outsiders who stole the land from the Arabs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But nothing could be further from the truth. While it is true that Arabs settled and dominated Palestine \u2014 which in the modern period was an ill-defined province of the Ottoman Empire \u2014 it was the Jews who were dispossessed, some 2,000 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And it was the Jews who were a perpetually persecuted minority in the territory which was theirs for more than 14 centuries, beginning with the conquest of Joshua, and ending with the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 C.E., followed by the rout of<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bar_Kokhba_revolt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bar_Kokhba_revolt&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2q2QXgjilFRO3rb2FfW6kP\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Bar Kokhba<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and his rebels in 135 C.E.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And it was the Jews who were associated, throughout the period of their dispossession, with the province known as Palestine \u2014 even by Muslim scholars of the Koran, as\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/judaism\/all\/what-the-koran-says-about-the-land-of-israel-1.8278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thejc.com\/judaism\/all\/what-the-koran-says-about-the-land-of-israel-1.8278&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw25JCcdRth6R17AWfVz3-1W\">pointed out<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0by, among others, the widely respected British imam, Sheikh Dr. Muhammad Al-Husseini.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">How is it possible that the truly dispossessed can be accused of dispossessing others when they reclaim territory that is rightfully theirs?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What this means is that anyone who proposes Israel\u2019s illegitimacy is simply guilty of Orwellian doublethink \u2014 at its worst. As Winston Smith, the protagonist of George Orwell\u2019s masterpiece \u201c1984\u201d puts it: doublethink is \u201cto be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The truth of the Land of Israel\u2019s association with the Jewish nation cannot possibly be disputed \u2014 it is a fact no less true than that the sky is above, and that water is wet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The first evidence we have for this eternal connection between the Jewish people and the Land of Israel is in Parshat\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/rabbidunner.com\/category\/articles\/torah-portions\/lech-lecha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/rabbidunner.com\/category\/articles\/torah-portions\/lech-lecha\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw33baX8IjVFjpWTkgzX9McC\">Lech Lecha<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, initially and most strikingly in the verse (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.13.15?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.13.15?lang%3Dbi%26with%3Dall%26lang2%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3PkJXn1oJeQbdHS_pMlsOL\">Gen. 13:15<\/a><\/strong><\/span>) when God informs Abraham: \u201cthe entire land that you see is given to you and your offspring \u2014 forever.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">But there is another reference, equally important, that refers specifically to the dispossession of the Jews. This reference clearly acknowledges that the land will remain Jewish even during the period of dispossession and that the Jews will return to their land in due course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">A little later on in Parshat Lech Lecha, God enters into a covenant with Abraham \u2014 promising him children, and that his descendants would inherit the land. But Abraham seems unsure, and he seeks an assurance from God that these promises would indeed happen. \u201cHow do I know that I will take possession of [the land],\u201d he inquires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The commentaries are all shocked by Abraham\u2019s question \u2014 but perhaps more shocking is the seeming lack of any answer. Meanwhile, God appears to ignore the question, and instead segues into a prophecy about the period of slavery in Egypt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Not so, says Rabbi\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yaakov_Moshe_Charlap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yaakov_Moshe_Charlap&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3uf1bX0ZX3PtTk6nc1RGxt\">Yaakov Moshe Charlap<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(1882-1951) \u2014 devoted student of Rabbi\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Isaac_Kook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abraham_Isaac_Kook&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw20Ph9n1nMXfoPTyIvtPate\">Avraham Yitzchak Kook<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(1865-1935), and founding rabbi of the Shaarei Hesed neighborhood in Jerusalem. The verse in question (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #000080; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.15.13?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.sefaria.org\/Genesis.15.13?lang%3Dbi%26with%3Dall%26lang2%3Den&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1667629417053000&amp;usg=AOvVaw18AmMD8x2vCiN9hWeb_wIz\">Gen. 15:13<\/a>)<\/strong><\/span> has God telling Abraham, \u201cjust know that your offspring will be strangers in a land that is not theirs.\u201d And while it is true that the simplest interpretation of this verse is that God designated Abraham\u2019s query as a lapse of faith, for which his descendants would need to endure a period of exile, there is another interpretation that is far more compelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">According to Rabbi Charlap, this verse directly answers Abraham\u2019s question. Rather than ignoring Abraham, God was telling him that even when his descendants would have to endure periods of exile, it would be in a land that was not theirs and would never be theirs \u2013 because the only land that was theirs, now and forever, was the land that God had promised him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The Jewish exile may last for centuries and millennia, as indeed it did, during which Jews would be a minority in countries controlled by others, sometimes integrated, and at other times persecuted. But at the end of it all, those countries would belong to other nations, and the only Jewish country will be the country from which the Jews were dispossessed. That country \u2014 Eretz Yisrael \u2014 is the country that we have always called home, and that country \u2014 Eretz Yisrael \u2014 will remain our home forever.
