US rock star John Mellencamp issued a fierce denunciation of antisemitism from the stage at an event in Los Angeles honoring a prominent Jewish entertainment lawyer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The composer of \u201cJack & Diane,\u201d \u201cAin\u2019t Even Done With the Night\u201d and other hits was speaking at a ceremony on Sunday inducting lawyer Allen Grubman \u2014 who has represented Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey and other top artists \u2014 into the Rock \u2018n\u2019 Roll Hall of Fame.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Grubman prepared to walk onto the stage to accept the honor, Mellencamp told the audience: \u201cAllen is Jewish, and I bring that up for one reason: I\u2019m a gentile, and my life has been enriched by countless Jewish people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mellencamp then went on to condemn antisemitism in no uncertain terms, indirectly referencing the recent controversy involving hip hop star Kanye West\u2019s antisemitic outbursts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot tell you how f\u2013king important it is to speak out if you\u2019re an artist against antisemitism,\u201d he stated. \u201cI don\u2019t give a f\u2013k, I don\u2019t care [what you are]. Here\u2019s the trick: Silence is complicity. I\u2019m standing here tonight loudly and proudly with Allen, his family and all of my Jewish friends and all of the Jewish people of the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In a barb seemingly directed at West, Mellencamp declared: \u201cF\u2013k antisemitism, and f\u2013k anybody who says anything in that manner.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

West\u2019s comments have been criticized by other star musicians, including Australian rocker\u00a0Nick Cave<\/a>, who labeled the rapper \u201cdisgraceful\u201d despite being \u201cthe greatest artist of our time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As well as Grubman, Sunday\u2019s ceremony saw a slew of other artists inducted into the Hall of Fame, among them Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie and Duran Duran.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
