Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving is feeling pressure off the court as some of basketball\u2019s key influencers lined up to condemn him as an \u201cidiot\u201d for promoting a documentary about the slave trade regarded as antisemitic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on TNT\u2019s \u201cInside the NBA\u201d show, NBA Hall-of-Famer Charles Barkley turned an unforgiving eye on both Irving and the Nets, who are in crisis following the firing of coach Steve Nash on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you\u2019re somebody as great at basketball as (Irving), people are going to listen to what you say,\u201d Barkley commented. \u201cI blame the NBA, he should have been suspended.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Barkley argued that NBA commissioner Adam Silver should have taken decisive punitive action against Irving.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI think Adam should have suspended him,\u201d he asserted. \u201cFirst of all, Adam is Jewish \u2014 you can\u2019t take my $40 million and insult my religion. You gonna insult me, you have the right, but I have the right to say, \u2018You can\u2019t take my $40 million and insult my religion.\u2019 I think the NBA, they made a mistake. We\u2019ve suspended people and fined people who have made homophobic slurs. And that was the right thing to do. If you insult the Black community, you should be suspended or fined heavily.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Irving came in for strong criticism<\/a> last weekend when he tweeted a link to \u201cHebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America,\u201d a 2018 film described by Rolling Stone<\/em> as \u201cstuffed with antisemitic tropes.\u201d Among those who condemned the shooting guard was Nets owner Joe Tsai, but Irving remained unmoved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn terms of the backlash, we\u2019re in 2022, history is not supposed to be hidden from anybody and I\u2019m not a divisive person when it comes to religion, I embrace all walks of life,\u201d Irving said at a press conference following the Nets\u2019 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Saturday. \u201cSo the claims of antisemitism and who are the original chosen people of God and we go into these religious conversations and it\u2019s a big no, no, I don\u2019t live my life that way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

As well as Barkley, NBA great Shaquille O\u2019Neal also ripped Irving, calling the player an \u201cidiot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe game we used to love, and we promote it brings people together,\u201d O\u2019Neal said. \u201cAnd it hurts me sometimes when we have to sit up here to talk about stuff that divides the game. Now we got to answer for what this idiot has done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
