Photo: wiki commons.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Anti-Israel activism on American college campuses has never been more widespread \u2014 and much of it comes in the form of publications in campus media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Last spring, for example, the&nbsp;<em>Harvard<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Crimson<\/em>&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2022\/4\/29\/editorial-bds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2022\/4\/29\/editorial-bds\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1UF7EpZeC77cxSCgvTLWFt\">endorsed<\/a>&nbsp;the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, and earlier this month, the editorial board of the University of Connecticut\u2019s paper&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/dailycampus.com\/2022\/11\/11\/editorial-israel-discovery-trip-whitewashes-human-rights-abuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/dailycampus.com\/2022\/11\/11\/editorial-israel-discovery-trip-whitewashes-human-rights-abuses\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0JZue7W8a1RrkaDgGLBujH\">wrote<\/a>, falsely, that since 1948, \u201cIsrael has maintained a program of ethnic cleansing, apartheid and settler-colonialism of Palestinians.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">In response to such slanders, Jewish students frequently assert that, \u201cIsrael has offered the Palestinians peace numerous times.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">I\u2019ve heard this argument more times than I can count over the years, but there are two problems with it. Not only is it unresponsive to the claims made by anti-Israel activists, but it\u2019s not even fully accurate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When speaking about the conflict, Palestinian leaders, the myriad of NGOs that uncritically support them, and the Westerners who rally to their cause, rarely claim that what the Palestinians want from Israel is peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">What they say they want, and what others say the Palestinians need, is \u201cliberation\u201d and a state of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">The&nbsp;<em>Crimson<\/em>&nbsp;editorial board, for example, claims to support a \u201cfree Palestine.\u201d The BDS movement that the&nbsp;<em>Crimson<\/em>&nbsp;endorsed, on its&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/bdsmovement.net\/what-is-bds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/bdsmovement.net\/what-is-bds&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2sNi8jeMyBtQY00ITqg6Ul\">website<\/a>, describes itself, not as a \u201cpeace movement,\u201d but as a movement for \u201cfreedom, justice, and equality.\u201d And the UConn editorial board writes of a \u201cdiscriminatory system of apartheid\u2026 which denies Palestinians their full rights to suffrage\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">And in fact, it\u2019s a state \u2014 in addition to peace \u2014 that Israel has repeatedly offered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Israel offered the Palestinians&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/palestinians-rejected-statehood-three-times-claim-frustration-with-israel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/palestinians-rejected-statehood-three-times-claim-frustration-with-israel\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2hNVCZKz-RNa8CKa4UWbjj\">a state<\/a>&nbsp;in 2000, and again in 2008. The UN Partition Plan, had it been accepted by the Palestinians, would have created a state for them. The 2014 negotiations facilitated by Secretary of State John Kerry, also could have led to&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2017-06-08\/ty-article-magazine\/.premium\/exclusive-obamas-plans-for-mideast-peace-revealed\/0000017f-f58f-ddde-abff-fdef4a8c0000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/2017-06-08\/ty-article-magazine\/.premium\/exclusive-obamas-plans-for-mideast-peace-revealed\/0000017f-f58f-ddde-abff-fdef4a8c0000&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw25phd85ZE4YsbH1vWEzyYG\">a state<\/a>&nbsp;for the Palestinians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It is the offer of statehood and independence, along with peace, that Palestinians have rejected repeatedly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Furthermore, it is not even incumbent on Israel to offer peace \u2014 even though it frequently has. Israel is not the aggressive party in the conflict. Hamas instigated conflicts in 2009, 2012, 2014, and 2021, and the Palestinian Authority incites terror attacks and intifadas through countless means, including by paying&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/the-forward-opinion-page-defends-pay-to-slay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/the-forward-opinion-page-defends-pay-to-slay\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1JenASB2c_wU3bLv3Ylups\">salaries<\/a>&nbsp;to the terrorists and their families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It was Egypt that provoked the Six-Day War in 1967, and multiple invading Arab armies that began the war in 1948. Still, as the Abraham Accords demonstrate, Israel will extend its hand in peace to any of its neighbors that offer it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Peace is what Israel wants \u2013 and Israel has demonstrated its willingness to grant the Palestinians statehood in exchange for peace, to no avail. As proof of concept, Israel unilaterally withdrew from the Gaza strip in 2005, and, in return, has only gotten war and violence in response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Those who repeat that \u201cIsrael has offered peace\u201d ignore the popular rallying cry, \u201cno justice, no peace.\u201d Na\u00efve Westerners believe that Palestinians are justified in rejecting peace, because they are so often unaware that \u201cjustice\u201d has in fact been on offer multiple times. Israel\u2019s supporters need to make clear that Palestinians have been offered a path to liberation, but that their own leaders refused to go down that path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">When asked why Yasser Arafat turned down the 2000 Camp David offer of statehood, former US Ambassador and Camp David negotiator&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/why-the-harvard-crimson-and-bds-are-dead-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/why-the-harvard-crimson-and-bds-are-dead-wrong\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3xwWvw9W6jBTOySYXDitM1\">Dennis Ross<\/a>&nbsp;said, \u201cbecause fundamentally I do not believe he can end the conflict. We had one critical clause in this agreement, and that clause was, this is the end of the conflict.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Palestinian leaders do not want to end the conflict and, therefore, have rejected all such offers. Moreover, their demands for independence include terms, such as the \u201cright of return\u201d that would destroy Israel, which are nothing more than&nbsp;<a style=\"color: #000080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/op-eds\/palestinian-demands-in-jerusalem-are-a-poison-pill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/op-eds\/palestinian-demands-in-jerusalem-are-a-poison-pill&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1669287527390000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0cvsbhRARqW4_xdJY9cinb\">poison pills<\/a>&nbsp;that make any agreement impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">This leads to the conclusion that Palestinian leaders do not really want peace \u2014 and, despite their claims, they don\u2019t really want statehood either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Those who press Israel\u2019s case to the public must stop asserting that \u201cIsrael has offered peace,\u201d and correctly explain that Israel has offered statehood, independence, and the opportunity for the Palestinians to chart their own destiny multiple times.
