State Department: Endorsing two-state solution would make us biased

Comments come as US delegation arrives in region to jump start talks amid Palestinian grumblings about lack of clarity

WASHINGTON — Committing to the two-state solution would bias Washington in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, a US official said Wednesday, as a high-level delegation arrived in the region to try and jump start talks amid Palestinian protests over a lack of clarity from the White House.

“We are not going to state what the outcome has to be,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. “It has to be workable to both sides. That’s the best view as to not really bias one side over the other, to make sure that they can work through it.”

Her comments came as Palestinians have increasingly complained over the White House’s refusal to endorse the two-state solution, breaking with longstanding US policy and an international consensus.

On Sunday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas told a group of dovish Israeli lawmakers that he had met with Trump officials 20 times, but had no idea what their stance on issues was, describing the administration as “in chaos.”

Other officials have expressed dismay as well and accused the US of being biased toward Israel, even as a delegation led by Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner arrives in the region to try and find a way forward.

On Tuesday, Ahmad Majdalani, a top aide to Abbas, said the Palestinians asked Kushner for the US position on two key issues — Israeli settlements and support for Palestinian independence — during his last visit to the region in June.

“Since then we didn’t hear from them,” he said.

“Since then we didn’t hear from them,” he said.

“We hope they bring clear answers this time,” he added. “If not, then the peace process cannot be resumed because we cannot negotiate from scratch.”

Nauert’s comments appeared to reflect recognition of a lack of support for the two state solution in Israel’s right-win government.

While most members of the current Israeli government are not on record supporting two states, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has at least rhetorically held that stance since 2009, although he has wavered on it in recent years.

Abbas supports a two-state outcome, which he articulated in remarks alongside President Trump during their last joint appearance in Bethlehem in May.

Trump, however, broke with his predecessors last February when Netanyahu visited Washington. Standing alongside the Israeli premier, Trump said, “I’m looking at two-state and one-state, and I like the one that both parties like.”

On Wednesday, Nauert suggested that the United States inserting its view into the negotiations would not yield to an agreement. Rather, only Israelis and Palestinians can find a lasting resolution.

“It’s been many, many decades, as you well know, that the parties have not been able to come to any kind of good agreement and sustainable solution to this,” she said. “So we leave it up to them to be able to work that through.”

Her remarks came as Kushner, Special Envoy for International Negotiations Jason Greenblatt, and Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategy Dina Powell arrived in Israel to meet separately with Netanyahu and Abbas.

The delegation arrived in Israel after several meetings with other leaders around the Middle East on the topic, including in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

On Tuesday, King Abdullah II of Jordan told the Kushner-led team that the two-state solution is the only way to solve the conflict.

A US diplomatic source told reporters Wednesday night in Jerusalem that the president wants discussions “to focus on the transition to substantive … peace talks, the situation in Gaza, including how to ease the humanitarian crisis there, and the economic steps that can be taken.”

That being said, Trump acknowledges “there are likely to be a lot of ups and downs on the way to peace and making a peace deal will take time,” but that he “remains optimistic that progress toward a deal can be achieved,” the source said.

Rgularnie obserwujemy duże zmiany w poglądach wielu osób życia publicznego – polityków, dziennikarzy, komentatorów, a nawet naukowców. Jednak jedną z najbardziej spektakularnych przemian dokonanych na oczach opinii publicznej jest wolta Magdaleny Ogórek. Ostatni tweet wydaje się być jej zwieńczeniem. A niektórzy współodpowiedzialni za jej zaistnienie w polityce, dziś mają z tym ogromny problem.

Ostatni głos Magdaleny Ogórek, który miał wybrzmiał na Twitterze wywołał wielkie poruszenie w mediach społecznościowych. Zajęła się nim nawet Rada Etyki Mediów. I niestety, nie był to merytoryczny głos, który mógłby być chwalony i pokazywany jako przykład. Prawicowa publicystka postanowiła włożyć ręce do rynsztoka i wyciągnąć przeszłość ojca obecnego senatora, dawnego marszałka Sejmu Marka Borowskiego. Na reakcję senatora nie trzeba było długo czekać, a komentarze (nawet Tomasza Terlikowskiego) miażdżyły wschodzącą gwiazdę prawicy i telewizji publicznej.

Kiedy wydaje się,że niżej nie można już spaść, ktoś puka od dołu w dno.Okazuje się,że to Pani Magda Ogórek. A nazwiska nie zmieniałem.

Właśnie. Prawicowa publicystka. Wydaje się, że było to wieki temu, ale zaledwie w 2015 roku, w wyborach prezydenckich Magdalena Ogórek była kandydatką na najwyższy urząd w państwie z ramienia… Sojuszu Lewicy Demokratycznej. Tempo zmiany poglądów jest zadziwiające i pani Magdalena Ogórek idzie na rekord (tak szybcy nie byli nawet bracia Karnowscy, ani profesor Andrzej Zybertowicz). Jak nastąpiła ta zmiana, i jak patrzy na to polityk, który w znacznej mierze przyłożył rękę do wypromowania tej osoby w przestrzeni publicznej?

Kościół i Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej
Jeszcze kilka lat temu, Magdalena Ogórek była znana jako historyk kościoła katolickiego, której wypowiedzi (skądinąd wyważone i merytoryczne) można było słuchać w stacjach radiowych i oglądać na ekranach telewizorów

Tak naprawdę nikt nie przypuszczał, że oprócz roli ekspertki w tematach kościelnych, Magdalena Ogórek może stać się polityczno-medialną gwiazdą. Jednak nadszedł rok 2015 i rozpoczął się jej regularny upadek. Aż na dno.

9 stycznia 2015 roku, ówczesny przewodniczący Sojuszu Lewicy Demokratycznej Leszek Miller ogłosił, że Magdalena Ogórek będzie kandydatką Sojuszu na prezydenta RP. Nazywa ja nawet “symbolem zmiany, także pokoleniowej, symbolem otwarcia polskiej polityki na młode europejskie pokolenie Polek i Polaków”. Przez kilka miesięcy byliśmy świadkami mało udanej kampanii wyborczej, a kandydatka przedstawiła nawet plan reform dla Polski (słynne napisanie prawa od nowa).

Wynik wyborczy był mizerny – 2,4 procent to sromotna porażka zarówno jej samej, jak i SLD, a przede wszystkim Leszka Millera. I właśnie jego postanowiliśmy zapytać, co takiego stało się z byłą kandydatka lewicy na prezydenta.

Leszek Miller o “symbolu zmian”
Mieliśmy do byłego przewodniczącego SLD kilka pytań. Bo kto, jak nie on powinien znać Magdalenę Ogórek? Co myśli o tak szybkiej zmianie poglądów? I jak to możliwe, że kobieta o lewicowych poglądach prawie z dnia na dzień staje się prawicowym miotaczem obelg, antysemickich wpisów i gwiazdą prawicowo-publicznej telewizji?

– Unikam rozmowy na temat Magdaleny Ogórek. To jest dorosła kobieta, która podejmuje suwerenne decyzje. Magdalena Ogórek przez kilka lat była związana z SLD, była blisko partii, a teraz tak wybrała i to jest jej decyzja – tylko tyle na temat swojej politycznej “wybranki” miał do powiedzenia Leszek Miller. Dodał też, że sam chętnie dowiedziałby się o powodach tak radykalnej zmiany.

I tylko tyle. Okazuje się, że polityk, który dwa lata temu namaścił historyczkę kościoła na kandydatkę lewicy na prezydenta, która miała ją odrodzić, ma na temat jej radykalnej zmiany poglądów dwa zdania komentarza. Jeszcze mniej ma do powiedzenia na zarzuty o wprowadzenie swego rodzaju “konia trojańskiego” do polskiej polityki. Taki zarzut ze strony m.in. Sławomira Neumanna komentuje jednym tweetem, na którym widać wspólne zdjęcie Aleksandra Kwaśniewskiego, Tadeusza Iwińskiego, Grzegorza Napieralskiego i… właśnie Magdaleny Ogórek.*******************************

Jedno da się jednak stwierdzić: SLD nie istnieje w przestrzeni publicznej, a Magdalena Ogórek jak najbardziej. I wydaje się, że dopiero się rozkręca. A rajd z lewej na prawą stronę polskiej sceny politycznej to żadna przeszkoda. Ale czy to pierwszy taki przypadek? Przecież to tylko polityka.

JNS.org – A winner of a Lebanese beauty pageant has been stripped of her title after it was revealed she visited Israel.

Dual Swedish-Lebanese citizen Amanda Hanna, who won the Miss Lebanon Emigrant 2017 competition earlier this month, was told she would be stripped of her title after visiting Israel using her Swedish passport on an academic trip in 2016.

“After communicating our decision with Lebanon’s Minister of Tourism, he decided that Hanna should be stripped of her title because her visit to Israel violates our country’s laws,” according to a statement The Festival of Lebanese Emigrants in Dhour Al Choueir provided to the Lebanese newspaper Al Modon.

Israel and Lebanon technically remain in a “state of war,” and it is illegal for Lebanese citizens to travel to the Jewish state.

This isn’t the first controversy over a Lebanese beauty queen and Israel. In 2015, Miss Lebanon, Saly Greige, nearly lost her titled after she posted a photo on social media appearing with Miss Israel, Doron Matalon.
