‘Reasonableness’ bill advances to final Knesset votes

Politics is said to be the art of compromise. It is also often artless hypocrisy. The latter has been on display throughout the months of demonstrations in Israel against judicial reform.

While hundreds of thousands of Israelis have taken to the streets to protest what they call a “coup” that will weaken Israeli democracy, officials have expressed outrage at their actions, calling them “traitors and anarchists.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared protesters to settlers who rioted in a Palestinian village and said, “Claims of a democratic collapse are detached and intended to scare the public.” He and other ministers condemned protests at their homes. The defense minister has called the refusal of reservists to show up for duty “dangerous.”

What would you do if you believed your government was a threat to the nation?

Let’s roll the videotape from 1994 and 1995 to see how the right wing, which is in such high dudgeon, reacted to what it viewed as a threat to the nation and how the left-wing government responded.

On July 4, 1994, The Los Angeles Times reported that “hundreds of angry Jews clashed with police” outside Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s house over the Oslo agreement. Rabin “accused his opponents of inciting violence with scare stories of a Palestinian-controlled Jerusalem.”

Earlier, “one of the biggest anti-government rallies in Jerusalem’s modern history had turned ugly as thousands of Jews took to the streets late Saturday, some throwing rocks at Arab-owned shops, burning cars and defying riot police.” The New York Times reported the crowd shouted, “Rabin is a traitor!” and burned his picture.

Inciting the crowd, Netanyahu said: “Arafat, who is personally responsible for the murder of thousands of Jews and non-Jews, this war criminal, is being hoisted aloft by the Government of Israel, which is permitting him to carry out the first phase of his plan.”

Later rallies featured posters of Rabin wearing a keffiyeh and SS uniform. Some similar posters of Netanyahu have been seen this year.

Some Labor government ministers said the media was overly sympathetic to the protesters against Oslo.

Does that sound familiar?

It should because Netanyahu said in March that “we are witnessing an unprecedented attack by biased media channels against the government, fully mobilized to serve opponents of the reform.”

The LAT said in 1994, “protesters taunted riot police from a makeshift “tent city,” which government opponents set up opposite Rabin’s office a month ago. Some blew whistles and banged cooking pans, hoping to be heard inside the Cabinet meeting.”

Today, the coalition is criticizing the police for being too lenient. Then, 65 demonstrators were arrested and later released.

The NYT said several ministers accused the opposition of abusing democratic freedoms. Israeli Communications Minister Shulamit Aloni, for example, said, “It’s a rebellion” and that the demonstrators “are presenting a legitimate government as traitors.”

“Opposition leaders charged that Mr. Rabin was panicking in the face of legitimate protest and trying to gag his critics,” according to the NYT.

Today, protesters say they are fighting for democracy; then it was referred to as a battle for the defense of Jerusalem.”

A few months earlier, another NYT story noted that three influential rabbis said religious law requires soldiers to defy any army order to evacuate Jewish settlers from the territories. Former Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir agreed that soldiers should disobey orders to remove Jews “‘from the homeland’ because that would be equivalent to an order to kill his parents.”

Rabin said such talk would result in “the destruction of the Israeli Defense Forces and the security of the state.” Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Ehud Barak warned that soldiers refusing to follow orders would go to prison. Three soldiers who refused reserve duty at the time were briefly jailed.

In March 2023, the same Ehud Barak said: “People who have risked their lives many times, and lost colleagues, in the service of a democracy are not prepared to do so in the service of a dictatorship or a dictator.”

After calling for “non-violent civil disobedience,” the Netanyahu government reportedly created a task force to investigate whether Barak could be charged with incitement. Regarding the reservists refusing to show up for duty, Netanyahu said: “The government won’t accept insubordination. The government will act against it and will take all necessary steps to ensure our security and our future.”

After the Rabin government announced a ban on new settlements in January 1995, the NYT said settlers considered it “a virtual declaration of war.”

In an article on Aug. 13, 1995, the NYT reported on demonstrations by settlers who blocked highways and hoped to bring the government to its knees with a wave of popular resistance. One settler said the goal was “paralyzing the army.”

The report said “in an unusually speedy trial, a leader [Moshe Feiglin] of a group that snarled traffic across the country last Tuesday was sentenced to a fine of more than $3,000 or 10 months in jail.”

“The Government calls the actions dangerous assaults on law and order, while the settlers say they are following a democratic tradition of non-violent civil disobedience,” the Times noted.

Nie warto zajmować się sprawami, na które nie mamy żadnego wpływu – patrz to, co się stało i dzieje się w Rosji. Trzeba jedynie przyjąć jako oczywistą prawdę, że polityka jest nieprzewidywalna, że poza makro trendami są jeszcze takie zdarzenia jak bunt Grupy Wagnera, prywatnej armii walczącej za pieniądze wszędzie tam, gdzie chciał ten który płacił, czyli car Rosji Putin.

No to może warto spojrzeć na to, co dzieje się na polskim podwórku, na naszej politycznej scenie. W sobotę odbyły się wiece i konwencje wszystkich partii biorących udział w wyścigu po władzę. Wszystkie one zostały przykryte przez wydarzenia w Rosji ale teraz, na spokojnie można przyjrzeć się temu, co dzieje się w polskiej polityce.

Wiec Tuska we Wrocławiu i wiec Kaczyńskiego w Bogatyni pokazał raz jeszcze wszystkie różnice jakie dzielą te ugrupowania. Główny wniosek jaki płynie z dotychczasowej kampanii tych partii jest taki, że to Tusk nadaje ton, to jego partia mobilizuje ludzi do wielotysięcznych spotkań gdzie grają głównie emocje. Wiec PiS w Bogatyni był próbą zbudowania emocji na obronie kopalni w Turowie i podsycanie niechęci do Unii Europejskiej jako zagrażającej polskiej suwerenności. Wiec w Bogatyni był reakcją na wieców Tuska.

Drożyzna, pogarszająca się opieka zdrowotna, dramaty rodzących kobiet, korupcja i zwykłe złodziejstwo w wykonaniu rządów PiS, w zderzeniu z takimi wartościami jak zagrożona suwerenność i urażona narodowa duma – tam konkrety a tu mgliste pojęcia – zobaczymy jaki będzie tego skutek. Wszystkie przesłanki i wnioski płynące z pogłębionych badań i sondaży skłaniają do wniosku o zdecydowanej przewadze konkretu nad mglistymi pojęciami i wartościami przywoływanymi  w Bogatyni przez prezesa i jego polityków.

Poza głównymi aktorami na polskiej scenie politycznej głos zabierały wszystkie pozostałe partie – Trzecia droga, Konfederacja, Lewica.

Trzecia droga jest wyraźnie na rozdrożu, poparcie słabnie i pójście jako koalicja z progiem 8 % może zakończyć się powtórką z historii, w której to Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej z Palikotem nie przekroczyło koalicyjnego progu otwierając drogę do zwycięstwa Kaczyńskiemu w 2015 roku. Jest jeszcze czas na zmianę ale jest go coraz mniej.

Obecna Lewica postawiła na kobiety, to sprawy kobiet były dominującym tematem konwencji, to kobiety były głównymi aktorkami tego spektaklu. Taki temat w obecnej sytuacji w Polsce musi dać punkty wyborcze. Od wyroku Trybunału Juli Przyłębskiej w sprawie ustawy aborcyjnej, przez kolejne tragedie młodych kobiet pozbawionych prawa do decydowaniu o własnym życiu i zdrowiu po utrzymujący się stan dyskryminacji płacowej – wszystko to są tematy nośne, trafiające do kobiet niezależnie od ich poglądów politycznych i mogące przynieść wzrost notowań i poprawę wyniku wyborczego.

Na tym tle Konfederacja, obecnie trzecia siła w sondażach wyborczych, zaprezentowała program ujęty w kształt konstytucji gospodarczej obiecującej świat szczęścia i bogactwa dla tych, którzy będą pracowali dla siebie a nie dla innych, świat dla Polaków bez Żydów, Ukraińców i islamistów. Twarzami konwencji byli Mentzen, Bosak i Braun ale to poseł Braun miał największy aplauz sali za wystąpienie skrajnie ksenofobiczne a miejscami nawet faszystowskie. Konfederacja może być po wyborach partią decydującą o tym kto będzie rządził Polską – to znaczy rząd PiS i Konfederacji.

Jeżeli komuś wydawało się, że nic gorszego niż rządy Zjednoczonej Prawicy, partii PiS Jarosława Kaczyńskiego, Solidarnej/Suwerennej Polski Zbigniewa Ziobro i tych przystawek Adama Bielana, Zbigniewa Giżyńskiego, Pawła Kukiza i jeszcze innych „wielkich polityków” nam się nie przydarzy to może się zdziwić. Taka możliwość istnieje, jest realnym zagrożeniem, a nawet śmiertelnym niebezpieczeństwem.

Przypadek Konfederacji, w której funkcjonują tacy ludzie jak Janusz Korwin-Mikke czy Grzegorz Braun, partii która przed wyborami wysunęła na pierwszy plan młodych Bosaka i Mentzena opowiadając piramidalne bzdury o możliwości funkcjonowania państwa bez podatków, państwa dla młodych, zdrowych i bogatych, staje się trzecią siłą w sondażach przedwyborczych. Scenariusz w którym Konfederacja współtworzy rząd z Mentzenem jako ministrem finansów i Braunem jako ministrem kultury i dziedzictwa narodowego wydaje się abstrakcją. Sam jednak fakt, że takie scenariusze wchodzą do gry jest już wystarczającym powodem do zastanowienia się nad całością życia politycznego w Polsce. Jeżeli dodamy podobne zjawiska u naszych zachodnich sąsiadów, w których AFD, partia jawnie sięgająca do nazistowskiej tradycji i argumentów, stała się już drugą siłą polityczną w Niemczech a w dalekiej Ameryce Donald Trump nie tylko nie siedzi w więzieniu, a działa i zwiększa skalę swojego poparcia wśród republikanów, to rajd Prigożyna przez Rosję to „małe piwo” wobec tego, co może grozić światu i nam.

Wniosek jest tylko jeden – trzeba przemyśleć system wyłaniania władzy i zmienić to, co nazywa się demokracją przedstawicielską na inny, bardziej merytokratyczny, uwolniony od tego, co mamy w głowach jako ideał demokracji ateńskiej z mitycznym suwerenem i wyborami jako świętem demokracji.

To nie święto a brudna gra wyborczych sztabów z całym przemysłem zwodzenia i manipulowania wolą wyborców. To nie jest demokracja, to zwykły cyrk i igrzyska.

W demokratycznej Ameryce Trump wygrał „wybory”, w demokratycznej Turcji Erdogan rządzi już od ćwierć wieku, podobnie władca na Węgrzech a w Polsce mamy realne zagrożenie wygrania/utrzymania władzy przez wybitnego „demokratę” Jarosława Kaczyńskiego.

To tylko niektóre przykłady z bliskiego nam podwórka, na świecie jest ich bardzo, bardzo wiele…

To, co przed nami, te kilka najbliższych miesięcy to czas śmiertelnie poważny, nasze być albo nie być.

European Commissioner Expresses Support for Freezing Palestinian Aid

A cabinet member of the European Commission, a body within the executive of the European Union, has expressed support for suspending aid to the Palestinian Authority (PA) if its leaders continue refusing to remove antisemitic and violent themes from schoolchildren’s textbooks.

EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi made the comments on Friday, following the European Parliament’s passing last Wednesday two resolutions insisting “that all antisemitic references be deleted and that examples that incite hatred and violence be removed.”

“Education for the next generation that supports peace, tolerance, coexistence & non-violence is a shared interest,” Varhelyi, who assured Israel in May that aid to the PA will not fund terror groups, said in a public statement. “We remain committed to deliver through constructive engagement with the Palestinian Authority, while reserving the right to take appropriate measures as necessary.”

Wednesday’s resolutions mark the second time in under two months that the EU Parliament has passed a resolution calling on the European Commission to suspend aid to the Palestinian Authority’s educational system until antisemitic and violent themes are removed from textbooks and other content provided to K-12 students. Additionally, the resolution marked the fourth year in the row that the EU has demanded immediate changes to Palestinian curriculum, which experts and lawmakers have described as the most antisemitic in the region and a factor protracting the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The EU parliament passed a similar measure in December, declaring that PA curriculum is in tension with European values. The previous year, in May 2021, the body froze aid to the Palestinian Authority for 13 months. Aid resumed the following January, with former European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen insisting that “all the difficulties are gone.”

In May, a different measure passed with 421 yes votes which noted that antisemitic content is influencing a rise in terrorist activity among Palestinian teenagers.

The Palestinian Authority has never significantly reformed its educational system, according to several reports by Impact-se, a pro-Israel watchdog group, which has continued to find, for example, grammar lessons saying “The Palestinians sacrifice their blood to liberate Jerusalem” and Arabic Drill Cards for 9th graders that say, “When the [Muslim] nation is negligent in protecting al-Aqsa, then the Jews will dare to defile it.” Israel also does not appear on any maps shown to students.

Teachers and staff working at Palestinian schools, who are funded by money the EU gives to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA), also promote antisemitism and hate on social media and in the classroom, according to a report issued by Impact-se in March which cited over 200 examples of the problem.

Across the Atlantic, US lawmakers have called for conditioning aid to the Palestinian Authority’s education system, proposing in March the United Nations Relief and Works Agency Accountability and Transparency Act, which would require the US Secretary of State’s certifying that UNRWA is audited by an independent body that determines its schools do not teach antisemitic tropes, employee individuals linked to terrorist organizations, or allow their grounds to be used for terrorist activities.

Proposed in the US Senate and House of Representatives by Sen. James E. Risch (R-ID) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), the bill has yet to be voted on be either body.
