Israeli, Iranian Directors Talk About Making Historic, ‘Risky’ Movie About Female Iranian Judoka

A movie premiering at the Venice Film Festival that is the first feature co-directed by an Israeli and an Iranian filmmaker is a timely story that needs to be told despite tensions between the two Middle Eastern countries, according to the project’s directors Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ebrahimi.

“It took us five minutes to become best friends and family,” Nattiv told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview about his relationship with Ebrahimi. “We eat the same hummus, the same pita, the same falafel. We listen to the same music. We love the same cinema. You meet the so-called enemy outside of Israel and it’s like, ‘Hey, I’ve missed you in my life’ … We were really on the same page about creative stuff.”

Tatami is about a female Iranian judoka named Leila — played by American Iranian- Chilean actress Arienne Mandi from The L Word — who is competing for gold at the Judo World Championships, but is ordered by the Islamic Republic to fake an injury and lose or be labeled a traitor by her home country. Leila must decide if she will listen to Iranian authorities or continue competing for the gold medal. Ebrahimi — a Cannes Film Festival best actress winner for Holy Spider — plays Leila’s coach, Maryam, who tries to convince her to comply with the Iranian regime and leave the competition. Tatami a type of mat used during judo bouts.

Nattiv, who recently directed Golda, also co-wrote the script of Tatami with Paris-based Iranian actress and screenwriter Elham Erfani and the film is produced by Israel’s Keshet Studios. Ebrahimi further serves as the film’s casting director. Iran and Israel have no diplomatic relations and Iran does not recognize the Jewish state. The Islamic Republic also has a long-standing policy of not allowing its athletes to compete against opponents from Israel.

Ebrahimi and Nattiv told The Hollywood Reporter the film’s storyline taps into the real-life struggles women currently face in Iran amid freedom protests about the mandatory hijab enforcement and following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was killed last year after allegedly being beaten by Iranian police when she was arrested for not wearing a hijab.

“We just felt this sudden urgency of telling the story,” Ebrahimi explained, saying that all the Iranians on the film’s set got emotional when they filmed a scene where Leila removes her hijab. “I think we all somehow felt like we were in this revolutionary time while making this movie,” she added. The director and actress fled to Paris in 2008 and became a French citizen in 2017 after facing her own difficulties with Iranian authorities.

She said when Nattiv reached out to her about making the film, it was a “beautiful offer.”

“I took a bit of time, because it’s a very risky project for me, even as an exiled artist,” she said to The Hollywood Reporter. “But at some point I just thought, ‘There is no reason to even think about it — I have to collaborate with him on this movie.’ ” She noted that the initial hesitation and fear she had of the Iranian regime, even while living in Paris, for joining the project is one of the big underlining messages in Tatami. “This was exactly the story [Nattiv] wanted to tell,” she said.

“And that’s how this first ever Israeli-Iranian collaboration was born, by just wanting to make something authentic, and give a voice to these female warriors,” added Nattiv.

Ebrahimi and Nattiv also talked about the “emotional” experience for both of them when Ebrahimi traveled to Israel, for the first time ever, to edit Tatami. Ebrahimi said she “felt at home” in Israel.

Nattiv said in a previously released statement that Tatami is “a creative statement to the world as thousands of innocent Iranian people are paying with their lives for freedom.” He told The Hollywood Reporter it also pays tribute to the anti-government protests taking place in Israel regarding a judicial overhaul sought by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Israeli democracy is in great danger, and I see correlation between Iran and Israel,” he said. “I don’t recognize my country anymore.”

Tatami will make its world premiere in the Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti competition on Sept. 2, on almost the one year anniversary of when Amini was killed. The film’s cast includes Ebrahimi’s Holy Spider co-stars Mehdi Bajestani and Sina Parvaneh alongside Jaime Ray Newman, Nadine Marshall, Lir Katz and Ash Goldeh.

Chosen Comedy Festival Returns to Brooklyn for Second Year With Jewish Comics Poking Fun at Jews and Beyond

The Chosen Comedy Festival took place on Tuesday night for the second year in a row at the Coney Island Amphitheater in Brooklyn, New York, and thousands attended to watch an impressive lineup of all Jewish comics ridicule them and others.

The event, following last year’s successful show in the same venue, was co-hosted by Jewish comedians Elon Gold and Modi Rosenfeld — who goes by the stage name Modi — and sponsored by the UJA Federation of New York in collaboration with Thrivewell Infusion and the New York City comedy club Stand Up NY.

The night began with musical performances by two bands, Emotional Intelligence and the Hasidic folk duo Zusha. Modi and Gold then took to the stage to roast the primarily Jewish audience of over 4,000 people and mock different types of Jews — Persians, Syrians, Israelis, Ashkenazim and Chassidim.

“I have a connection with my Jewish audience that I don’t get with anyone else,” Modi told The Algemeiner. “And that connection is that we get to go deep and really explore our beautiful heritage and culture. [There’s] thousands of years of material there to mine and when I get on stage in front of a Jewish crowd it’s a very, very special deep connection and I love it.”

Throughout the night, Modi and Gold introduced 10 Jewish comedians on stage, some who performed during last year’s event and many new faces. The comedians included Rich Vos, “The Roastmaster General” Jeff Ross, Eli Leonard (a writer on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jessica Kirson, surprise guest David Attell, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (puppeteered and voiced by Jewish comedian Robert Smigel), Ari Shaffir (who self-released his standup special called “Jew” last year), Eli Lebowicz, Eunji Kim and Josh Cahn, who joined the lineup after winning a competition held by Birthright Israel Beyond and Stand Up NY.

The show, which was DJed by Lady Blaga, ended with an epic few minutes on stage where Attell, Ross, Modi and Gold roasted each other about everything including Ross’ bald head (“you look like a mohel’s mohel” he was told), Attell’s attire (“you look like if the unabomber hung out at Katz’s Deli,” Gold told him) and Gold’s TJ Maxx-looking outfit.

While many jokes remained Jewish-centered, like last year’s show, others were intertwined with secular topics and an emphasis on Israel. Kim, who is originally from South Korea and converted to Judaism, made fun of immigrant moms while Vos joked: “If Moses walked two more f__king miles we would’ve had all the oil. Forty years in the desert and he couldn’t go two more f__king miles!”

Modi discussed how he intensely followed the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the HBO series Succession, and the “generational differences” he has with his much younger husband who is a millennial.

“People ask me, ‘are you worried that he married you for your money?’ And I said, ‘are you kidding me? I married him for technical support!’” Modi quipped.

He later said about Succession: “This family, every single room they ever walked into always had food. There were always sandwiches, pastries, a little muffin, some cut fruit — and no one else looked or touched it or spoke about it. If this family was Jewish, it is all that they would be concerned with: ‘Where did you order this from? 2nd Avenue [Deli], I’ll take it home cuz I know you don’t hold by them.’ ‘Take the fruit and give it to the housekeeper’ – it’s all that we would be discussing and we would never have the meeting.”

Gold warned that Israelis are not to be messed with and that while “Israelis return fire, Jews return merchandise.” A pre-recorded video also played on two massive screens by the stage that showed Triumph the Insult Comic Dog in London asking people about British former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters and his antisemitism. Earlier in the night, Ross led the audience to sing along with him “Don’t f__k with the Jews. If you want to hear cheers and not boos, never again f__k with the Jews.”

Kosher food trucks also provided food to the audience for purchase throughout the event, ranging from smoked meats and sandwiches, to gelato and pizza.

After the show, Gold was beaming with joy about the successful night and told The Algemeiner, “I think it was a lot like shul — it was too long, but it was way funnier than any shul outing I’ve ever gone too.”

“Tonight everyone that came on stage just really killed it and delivered,” he added. “And me and Modi had the times of our lives working with all our friends. Four thousand Jews showed up for a night of unity, solidarity, Jewish comedy, and Jewish pride and I’m so happy with how it went.”

Since the first Chosen Comedy Festival last year, founded by Stand Up NY owner Dani Zoldan, the show has gone on tour in Miami, Los Angeles and the Catskills. Zoldan told The Algemeiner he hopes to take the show to other US cities in the fall and abroad next year to Israel, London and Canada.

In June, Stand Up NY hosted another Jewish-centered comedy event in Los Angeles called “The Roast of Antisemitism” that included some of the same comics from Tuesday night’s performance in Brooklyn.

Pomyśl o tym przez chwilę. Poziom podżegania antyżydowskiego ze strony Autonomii Palestyńskiej jest tak intensywny, a terrorystom pozwala się na tak swobodne działanie w rządzonym przez AP Huwara, że pewnego przypadkowego dnia, kiedy zauważono dwóch Żydów w myjni samochodowej, był w pobliżu przypadkowy Palestyńczyk terrorysta i tak się złożyło, że miał przy sobie naładowaną broń i w był gotowy zamordować dwóch nieuzbrojonych cywilów w momencie, gdy tylko dostał informację o obecności Żydów.

Zabójca nie potrzebował nawet samochodu do ucieczki. Według doniesień mediów „uciekał pieszo”. Był tak pewny, że mieszkańcy Huwary nie będą mu się sprzeciwiać i tak pewny, że w pobliżu nie będzie policjantów AP, którzy mogliby się wtrącić, że po prostu odszedł.

„Prowadzenie pojazdu, będąc Żydem”

LATA TEMU działacze na rzecz praw obywatelskich w Stanach Zjednoczonych ukuli termin „prowadzenie samochodu, będąc czarnoskórym”, aby opisać niesprawiedliwe aresztowania afroamerykańskich kierowców. Myślę, że Shai Nigreker i Aviad Nir nie zdawali sobie sprawy, że na terytorium Autonomii Palestyńskiej mycie samochodu będąc Żydem jest przestępstwem.

A teraz odpowiedź administracji Bidena.

W ubiegłą sobotę o 13:46, wkrótce po otrzymaniu raportów o morderstwach, Biuro ds. Bliskiego Wschodu Departamentu Stanu wydało oficjalny komentarz administracji za pośrednictwem platformy mediów społecznościowych X, znanej wcześniej jako Twitter. Oto pełny tekst:

„Jednoznacznie potępiamy dzisiejszy atak terrorystyczny na Zachodnim Brzegu, w którym zginęło dwóch Izraelczyków. Stany Zjednoczone składają kondolencje ich rodzinom i wzywają do podjęcia natychmiastowych kroków w celu położenia kresu przemocy i podżeganiu do przemocy”.

Zauważ, czego brakowało? Słowa „Palestyńczyk”. Nie było najmniejszej wskazówki, kto zabił dwóch Izraelczyków. Z tego, co wiemy, mogli to być Marsjanie.

Nie było też najmniejszej wskazówki, od kogo Stany Zjednoczone spodziewają się podjęcia „natychmiastowych kroków w celu położenia kresu przemocy i podżeganiu do przemocy”. Od Albanii? Czerwonego Krzyża? Harcerek?

Za głęboko niepokojącym oświadczeniem administracji Bidena kryje się ich pełna hipokryzji  logika polityczna. Oczywiście administracja nie mogła powstrzymać się od potępienia ataku, bo rozwścieczyłoby to żydowskich wyborców w kluczowych stanach w chwili, gdy rozpoczyna się kampania reelekcyjna prezydenta.

Ale administracja nie chce przypominać społeczeństwu, że palestyńscy Arabowie mordują Żydów na myjni samochodowej. Podważyłoby to krucjatę mającą na celu utworzenie państwa palestyńskiego wzdłuż starych, w jednym miejscu szerokich na czternaście kilometrów granic Izraela. Kto o zdrowych zmysłach zgodziłby się na utworzenie obok siebie suwerennego państwa, rządzonego przez krwiożerczych morderców?

Ponadto administracja Bidena nie chce specjalnie wzywać AP do podjęcia kroków w celu położenia kresu przemocy i podżeganiu – ponieważ wtedy administracja musiałaby podjąć dalsze działania i coś zrobić, kiedy AP odmawia podjęcia tych kroków.

Pamiętajcie, że minęło 30 lat, odkąd AP zgodziła się w Porozumieniach z Oslo na aresztowanie terrorystów, rozbrojenie i zdelegalizowanie grup terrorystycznych, ekstradycję terrorystów do Izraela i położenie kresu wszelkiemu antyżydowskiemu i antyizraelskiemu podżeganiu w jej szkołach i mediach. Jednak nigdy tego nie zrobiła. Jeśli administracja Bidena zażądałaby od AP wypełnienia tych zobowiązań, a następnie zmierzyłaby się z odmową AP, utrudniłaby świetlisty marsz do państwa palestyńskiego.

I tak oto zostaliśmy z tym „potępieniem” przez Departament Stanu, które ledwo jest godne tej nazwy. Potępienia mają znaczenie tylko wtedy, gdy administracja Bidena jest gotowa wskazać stronę, która jest potępiana. Kondolencje będą miały sens tylko wtedy, gdy Stany Zjednoczone będą gotowe podjąć kroki, które zagwarantują, że w przyszłym tygodniu nie będą już składać takich kondolencji. Wszystko inne jest tylko farsą.

Stephen Flatow – Amerykański prawnik, który zainicjował szereg procesów przeciwko Islamskiej Republice Iranu w związku ze sponsorowaniem terroryzmu przez to państwo.
