Jewish groups accuse ZOA president of ‘bigotry’ for criticizing BLM

DONNA RACHEL EDMUNDS

Progressive Jewish groups have accused Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America of ‘bigotry’ and ‘hatred’ for his opposition of Black Lives Matter.

A coalition of Jewish and pro-Israel groups have called for Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America, to be expelled from Jewish umbrella groups, accusing him of “bigotry” and “hatred” following a number of tweets by Klein in which he accused Black Lives Matter (BLM) of antisemitism and promoting violence.

“As progressive pro-Israel organizations and members of the American Jewish community, we are appalled and outraged by the bigotry and hatred expressed and promoted by Morton Klein, president of the Zionist Organization of America (ZOA), at this painful and important moment of reckoning for our country,” the signatories wrote. “Klein’s latest outbursts and long track record of bigotry should make him unwelcome in any mainstream Jewish communal spaces and should lead to his expulsion from organizational umbrella groups such as the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.”

The statement was jointly issued by Jewish student group J Street, the New Israel Fund, Partners for Progressive Israel, Reconstructing Judaism, The Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association and T’ruah, and joined by Nancy Kaufman, past CEO of the National Council of Jewish Women.

On June 6, Klein urged the Southern Poverty Law Center to put Black Lives Matter on their list of hate groups, tweeting: “BLM is a Jew hating, White hating, Israel hating, conservative Black hating, violence promoting, dangerous Soros funded extremist group of haters.”

I urge the SPLC to immediately put BlackLivesMatter on their list of hate groups. BLM is a Jew hating, White hating, Israel hating, conservative Black hating, violence promoting, dangerous Soros funded extremist group of haters.
BlackLivesMatter is an antisemitic, Israel hating Soros funded racist extremist Israelophobic hate group. twitter.com/AEHarrod/statu

In another, posted two days earlier, Klein accused Black Lives Matter leaders and supporters of being “filled with hatred against Jewish people & Israel.”

Why are BlackLivesMatter supporters&leaders filled with hatred against Jewish people &Israel, but praise the terrorist Palestinian regime that pays Arabs to murder Jews and Americans. BLM lies about Israel even though MartinLutherKing said if youre anti Israel you’re antisemitic.
Last week I asked a rhetorical question, has anyone ever seen a Zionist support BLM/abolition? Bc my #FreePalestine ppl pull up EVERY time and Zionists are so quiet! Anyways, when Zionism isn’t silent on Black issues it is loud and racist so that answers that fuck cops & IDF! twitter.com/MortonAKlein7/

“Our community, of course, can and must be open and receptive to a wide variety of views, with plenty of space for strong debate and disagreement, the statement reads. “Yet the fundamental dignity of people of color and the legitimacy of their struggle for equal rights cannot be called into question. The continued presence of Klein and the ZOA in important umbrella groups is an affront to Jews of color and all people of color, and to the overwhelming majority of all American Jews. It undermines any pro-Israel, pro-peace advocacy and damages the collective reputation of our community.”

They conclude: “If we are serious about confronting systemic racism in our nation and our community, and if we are serious about playing a constructive role in securing a peaceful future for Israelis and Palestinians, we can start with a full-throated repudiation of Morton Klein and the ZOA.”

The statement is the latest salvo in a war of words raging between left and right-wing Jewish organizations, sparked by the Black Lives Matter protests currently taking place in cities worldwide.

In late May Klein wrote an op-ed for the Jewish News Syndicate in which he accused J Street themselves of being Soros funded, after they tweeted in support of Nabka Day, the Palestinian term for the founding of the State of Israel, which in Arabic translates as ‘catastrophe.’

This is not the first time that Black Lives Matter has stirred up factionalism between Jewish organizations. In 2016, Black Lives Matter sparked a similar battle of words with the publication of their platform in which Israel was accused of “genocide” and of being an “apartheid state.”

“The US justifies and advances the global war on terror via its alliance with Israel and is complicit in the genocide taking place against the Palestinian people,” they wrote in their policy document, adding: “Israeli soldiers also regularly arrest and detain Palestinians as young as 4 years old without due process. Everyday, Palestinians are forced to walk through military checkpoints along the US-funded apartheid wall.”

Following the publication, Jewish Voices For Peace issued a statement in support of Black Lives Matter including the statements about Israel, saying “We call on the US Jewish community to end its legitimization of anti-Black racism through its combined attacks on the Black Lives Matter Platform and U.S. Palestine solidarity.” Conversely, Klein at the time called for the American Jewish community to redirect its time and money toward fighting antisemitism.

Commenting in an op-ed on the Temple Bethel Springfield website, Rabbi Amy Wallk Katz suggested a middle line be found, writing: “We need to affirm our obligation to advocate for justice for everyone regardless of race, religion, ethnicity and gender. But we must realize that advocacy for everyone includes advocacy for ourselves.”

Problem z „pokojem”

Problem z „pokojem”

Odpowiadając na wypowiedź Malkiego, wysoki rangą funkcjonariusz Fatahu, Tawfik Tirawi, wydał ostre ostrzeżenie palestyńskiemu ministrowi spraw zagranicznych i oskarżył go o działania łamiące palestyński „narodowy konsensus”.

Należący do OWP Ludowy Front Wyzwolenia Palestyny (LFWP) wezwał do usunięcia Malkiego i pociągnięcia go do odpowiedzialności za gotowość do wznowienia rozmów pokojowych z Izraelem.

The Israeli Security Establishment Helped Beat Coronavirus

The Israeli Security Establishment Helped Beat Coronavirus — and Is Ready for Future Challenges

Yaakov Amidror

As Israel gradually lifts the restrictions it imposed to protect public health amid the coronavirus pandemic, concerns remain over the threat of a second wave of infections. If one does materialize, Israel will likely be in a better place to counter it — in no small part thanks to the exertions of its security establishment, whose unique strengths were vital to the country’s fight against the microscopic enemy.

The Defense Ministry became the country’s main logistical arm as the crisis unfolded, leveraging its strong overseas procurement capabilities and its extensive experience handling sensitive shipments arriving by air or sea. The Mossad intelligence agency joined the fray as well, mainly to obtain critically-needed and highly-sought medical equipment from abroad. These efforts helped prevent shortages that might have otherwise crippled the nation’s response to the pandemic.

Within hard-hit municipalities, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF)’s Home Front Command delivered food to at-risk populations, aided the evacuation of the ill to hospitals, and worked with communal groups to care for affected families. The exceptional encounters between these uniformed soldiers and members of the ultra-Orthodox and Arab Israeli communities, two demographic groups that largely forgo military service, reflected the widespread feeling of solidarity within Israel.

The Home Front Command also assumed responsibility for treating individuals arriving from abroad and managing hotels for those who required isolation. The Command’s commendable and tireless activities fell within its central mission — supporting the civilian sector during a crisis.

The IDF likewise facilitated the delivery of wide-ranging assistance to the Palestinians, including testing kits, protective gear, and other medical and humanitarian supplies, in order to mitigate the pandemic’s spread in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip and Palestinian Authority territories in the West Bank. These efforts seem to have born fruits, considering the low fatality rate among Palestinians to date.

But the military escalated its involvement even further. The Defense Ministry and the IDF’s advanced technology networks quickly developed systems that allowed hospitals to ventilate more patients, and to establish dedicated coronavirus wards where patients could be treated, monitored, and communicated with — all while isolated.

One of the IDF’s special units helped organize testing to identify coronavirus carriers and determine who needed to be isolated due to contact with the patients. It created a process to significantly shorten and ultimately “cut” the chain of contagion, so that the number of individuals infected by each carrier would be greatly reduced.

The IDF’s Intelligence Corps and C4i Directorate built on existing technologies typically used for military needs to establish a command and control system that conveys critical information, including the number of patients, their status and location, and lab performance. This system offers the Health Ministry a precise measure of the coronavirus threat, and control over relevant testing and monitoring tools.

Researchers at the IDF’s Military Intelligence Directorate took charge of investigating the disease, as well as summarizing research and findings from overseas that could provide valuable lessons. The Research Department produced daily reports on the state of the infection in Israel, and studies of efforts abroad that could aid decision makers — for instance, how other countries managed the easing of restrictions, protecting retirement homes, and the like.

The Shin Bet, Israel’s internal security agency, also played a role, deploying phone tracking technology typically used for counter-terrorism to retrace the movements of coronavirus patients and identify anyone they may have infected. Since this posed a significant breach of privacy, the Shin Bet needed special permission from the Knesset for the operation, which was approved as part of emergency regulations to handle the crisis.

The new capabilities now available to the Health Ministry mark a leap forward from the previous status quo, and the military will likely continue improving them, even though the difficult first wave has already receded in Israel. At the end of the process, the Israeli medical system will be in much better shape on these fronts relative to the eve of the outbreak.

The coronavirus pandemic again highlighted the uniqueness of Israel’s security establishment, which met its newest challenge with creativity and vigor, exceeding all expectations. At the same time, the IDF was able to maintain a high level of operational readiness and, according to foreign reports, it even struck targets in Syria several times. The lessons learned during these recent weeks are likely to shape Israel’s response to future crises, with the security establishment remaining a cornerstone in its defense against national threats — military, health, or otherwise.

A large concrete slab was thrown through a living room window of an Jewish 84-year-old woman in what an anti-racism group called a hate crime.

No one was injured in the incident Monday in the suburb of Gagny, but it left the victim “traumatized,” the National Bureau for Vigilance Against Antisemitism, or BNVCA, wrote in a statement Wednesday.

BNVCA believes the woman was singled out for attack because she has a mezuzah on the door frame of her home.

French Jews, who represent less than 1% of the total population, faced more than 41% of racist acts documented in France in 2019, according to the French Jewish community’s security service, SPCJ.

The 687 anti-Semitic acts documented in 2019 constitute a 26% increase over 2018, the SPCJ report for 2019 also said.
