My mentor John Lewis was the embodiment of Jewish values – opinion

My mentor John Lewis was the embodiment of Jewish values – opinion

OHN EAVES/JTA

In many ways, John Lewis lived a life in the tradition of Jewish prophets.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” Rep. John Lewis never ran from challenge or controversy, but he confronted injustice and intolerance wherever he found it. His life is a record of bravery, humility, compassion, boldness and strength.

John Robert Lewis was born in Troy, Alabama, during turbulent times in the segregated South of the Jim Crow era. Yet he rose from humble beginnings to be one of the most celebrated people during our times. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1986, and he was awarded the Presidential Freedom Award, the highest civilian honor, in 2011.

In many ways, John Lewis lived a life in the tradition of Jewish prophets. Like Isaiah, who responded to the call “Whom shall I send and who will go for us?” John Lewis accepted his calling for service at an early age, 15.

He was inspired to devote his life to service after hearing Dr. King on the radio while Dr. King was leading the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955-56.

Affectionately known as the “boy from Troy,” John Lewis left home in 1957 to attend the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. He learned from Dr. King and teachers in seminary about nonviolent protest, and Lewis organized sit-ins at segregated lunch counters in department stores. During his lifetime, John Lewis was arrested 40 times. In Nashville, he was often arrested and beaten during these demonstrations. Yet Lewis was committed to the civil rights movement and the principles of nonviolence.

In 1963, Lewis became a founding member of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee along with other civil rights icons like Julian Bond and Stokely Carmichael, and he served as its chairman. That same year, as one of the “Big Six” leaders of the civil rights movement, he helped plan the March on Washington. Lewis was the youngest speaker at the event.

The following year, the Civil Rights Act became law. Its passage, however, did not make it easier for Blacks to vote in the South. To bring attention to this struggle, John Lewis and fellow civil rights leader Hosea Williams led a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, on March 7, 1965. After crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the marchers were attacked by Alabama state troopers. John Lewis was severely beaten and suffered a fractured skull.

In recent years, Lewis found out that he had ancestors who, upon becoming emancipated from slavery, were among the first to register to vote in their county. Lewis believed that this spoke to his legacy and dedication to the civil rights movement.

One my proudest moments was being invited by John Lewis to be a part of a congressional delegation to attend the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday in Selma in 2015. Among those hand were President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, Sens.

Elizabeth Warren and Cory Booker, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Conyers. One of the highlights of this historical commemoration was the daughter of segregationist governor George Wallace giving a public apology for the actions of her father. Following this public declaration, John Lewis tearfully accepted her apology and forgave her.

John Lewis was a fierce critic of any “ism” in American society. He has a long record of outspokenness against racism, but he was equally forceful against anti-Semitism, xenophobia and homophobia.

He was a true friend of the Jewish community. He helped found the Atlanta Black-Jewish Coalition in 1982, and he was a founding member of the Congressional Black-Jewish Caucus in 2019 because he understood the importance of solidifying the historical relationships of these two groups of people.

He advocated for funding for HIV/AIDS. He and I took a public HIV/AIDS test on World AIDS Day in 2017. He spoke about gun violence, and he challenged Americans to protect our children from domestic terrorists who try to hide behind the Second Amendment.

In his final days, Congressman Lewis continued to speak out against systemic racism that led to the protests against police brutality in the United States, but at the same time he urged us to work together to heal and find a way forward.

John Lewis lived a life well lived, and his life and works will place him in the annals of American history as an authentic hero. Like the runners in a track meet, Congressman John Lewis has run his race with dignity and grace. He never tired of telling folks to “get into good trouble,” to defy the authorities and the conventional wisdom.

We should all do the same. The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of JTA or its parent company, 70 Faces Media.

Nick Cannon Demands Apology From ViacomCBS

Nick Cannon Demands Apology From ViacomCBS, Announces Trip to Israel, After Media Giant Axes Him Amid Antisemitism Furor

US television star and actor Nick Cannon clapped back at ViacomCBS on Wednesday shortly after the media giant fired him for promoting antisemitic conspiracy theories during an episode of his “Cannon’s Class” podcast.

In a lengthy statement posted on Facebook, the 39-year-old demanded an apology from the company as well as ownership of “Wild ‘N Out,” a comedy improv show broadcasting on VH1, which is owned by ViacomCBS. Cannon is the show’s executive producer and has been its host since 2005.

Although Cannon had previously refused to apologize for making antisemitic remarks on a “Cannon’s Class” episode, in his Facebook post, titled “Truth and Reconciliation,” he said, “If I have furthered the hate speech, I wholeheartedly apologize.”

“But now I am the one making demands. I demand full ownership of my billion dollar ‘Wild ‘N Out’ brand that I created, and they will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership! I demand that the hate and back door bullying cease and while we are at it, now that the truth is out, I demand the Apology!”

Cannon also alleged that ViacomCBS had recently banned “all advertisement that supported George Floyd and Breonna Taylor who we are still seeking justice for.” He said he had reached out to ViacomCBS Chair Shari Redstone “to have a conversation of reconciliation and actually apologize if I said anything that pained or hurt her or her community,” and received no response.

He accused ViacomCBS of having an “oppressive and racist infrastructure” and said the company was “now on the wrong side of history.”

“My hope and original goal was to use this moment to show healing and acceptance and prayed that Viacom would use their powers for good. Instead I am now receiving death threats, hate messages calling me an ungrateful [N—] and beyond,” said Cannon, who retweeted a slew of messages of support from fans as well as critics from late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

“Viacom’s goal to keep me from providing for my family and lineage will be foiled. They can try to kick me while I’m down or force me to kiss the master’s feet in public for shame and ridicule, but instead I stand firm on my square with my fist in the air repeating my mantra, ‘You can’t fire a Boss!’”

Cannon highlighted the “outpouring of love and support from the Jewish community” that he said he had received, and claimed he had spoken with “Rabbis, clergy, Professors and coworkers” who had offered to help him.

He added, “I must apologize to my Jewish Brothers and Sisters for putting them in such a painful position, which was never my intention, but I know this whole situation has hurt many people and together we will make it right.”

He also announced that he had been invited to visit Israel, “which is a lifelong dream where I will receive teachings, lessons and truth about the Jewish history.”

Cannon continued, “As someone who is in pursuit for my PHD in Theology and Divinity and just received a degree in Criminal Justice from the Great Howard University, this will be an enriching, enlightening and overall exciting trip!”

      Nick Cannon

Truth and Reconciliation.

I am deeply saddened in a moment so close to reconciliation that the powers that be, misused an important moment for us to all grow closer together and learn more about one another. Instead the moment was stolen and highjacked to make an example of an outspoken black man. I will not be bullied, silenced, or continuously oppressed by any organization, group, or corporation. I am disappointed that Viacom does not understand or respect the power of the black community.

I was a member of the Viacom “Family” for over Twenty years. Since I was a minor, we worked together to make great positive entertainment and I was handed many opportunities that I am grateful for. At17 years old, I was deemed the youngest staff writer in TV history on their various Nickelodeon series. In 2009 the wonderful and amazing Cyma Zarghami blessed me with the opportunity to become the youngest television Chairman in history, placing the teen division of Viacom solely in my hands as an executive. She along with the strong and brilliant Marva Smalls guided me through the corporate infrastructure that at times felt overwhelming due to many doubting my abilities as a black man. I am forever grateful to them for their love and kindness as leaders and their matriarch like care for me over the years. With their support, I rose to the occasion at Viacom creating philanthropic opportunities and award programing such as the HALO Awards which awarded youth grants for their nonprofit organizations to change the world and end everything from bigotry, homophobia, racism, and even attempting to find a cure for AIDS and Cancer. These young people had big ideas, big hearts and more importantly big optimism, just like myself. We successfully brought the world closer together for over 9 years with every big-name celebrity and major corporation you could think of, truly one of my proudest accomplishments in entertainment. Not because of ratings or numbers, but because I was able to empower the next generation. My time at Viacom also birthed one of my other greatest creative accomplishments; their longest running comedy series and the most successful Hip Hop programming in Television History “Wild ‘N Out”. An idea in which I self-financed out my own pocket and presented to MTV. I created a billion-dollar brand that expanded across a multitiered empire that is still Viacom’s biggest digital brand, touring business, talent discovery and incubation system and successful restaurant franchise. Based on trust and empty promises, my ownership was swindled away from me. For Viacom to be so deceptive is no surprise; they have been mistreating and robbing our community for years, underpaying talent on their biggest brands like Love & Hip Hop, all of BET programming and of course, Wild ‘N Out.

I don’t have to defend myself here, the proof is in the history. I believed that the corporation was becoming more progressive and willing to create helpful spaces and dialogue in these difficult and uncertain times of 2020. Instead they chose to recently ban all advertisement that supported George Floyd and Breonna Taylor who we are all still seeking justice for. I also went as far to reach out to Ms. Shari Redstone, the owner of Viacom, to have a conversation of reconciliation and actually apologize if I said anything that pained or hurt her or her community. Dead Silence! So that’s when I realized they don’t want a conversation or growth, they wanted to put the young negro in his place. They wanted to show me who is boss, hang me out to dry and make an example of anyone who says something they don’t agree with. But like the great Shirley Chisholm, “I am unbossed and unbought and unbothered”. I respectfully stepped away from oppressive corporations in the past. NBC threatened and mistreated me for years, but I was the bigger person and abandoned an 8-figure salary on their number one hit show “Americas Got Talent” and currently stand by my friend and Queen Gabrielle Union in her fight against oppression.

I took my talents and executive creativity to my open minded and willing partners at the Fox Television network to create the current #1 hit show on television “The Masked Singer” in which I host and executive produce. We are also gearing up to launch a daily talk show based in the historic community of Harlem, where the ultimate goal is to bring people closer together during these difficult times. Right now is the time for strong voices and compassionate thinkers to step up and create a dialogue of healing. Dr. King said, “We must learn to grow together as brothers, or we will parish together as fools”. Ironically at that time our government called him “the most dangerous Negro in the country” and labeled him a Terrorist. As we all know Hollywood and the media is a dirty business. Still, I honestly can’t believe that Viacom has such poor council that would allow them to make such a divisive decision in the midst of protests and civil uprising within our current pandemic. Truly an unwise decision. For them to take it one step further and flat out lie in their official press release, saying that I didn’t attempt to reconcile the situation when on two separate occasions I specifically acknowledged and openly requested a forum to be corrected. Malcolm X said it best, “The media is the most powerful entity on earth, it will have you hating the people being oppressed and loving the people doing the oppressing; making the innocent guilty and the guilty innocent.”

My hope and original goal was to use this moment to show healing and acceptance and prayed that Viacom would use their powers for good. Instead I am now receiving death threats, hate messages calling me an ungrateful Nigger and beyond. Viacom’s goal to keep me from providing for my family and lineage will be foiled. They can try to kick me while I’m down or force me to kiss the master’s feet in public for shame and ridicule, but instead I stand firm on my square with my fist in the air repeating my mantra, “You can’t fire a Boss!”.

In a pleasant turn of events and the best blessing in all of this hurtful attack is the outpouring of love and support from the Jewish community. It has been amazing. I have spoken with many Rabbis, clergy, Professors and coworkers who offer their sincere help. I must apologize to my Jewish Brothers and Sisters for putting them in such a painful position, which was never my intention, but I know this whole situation has hurt many people and together we will make it right. I have dedicated my daily efforts to continuing conversations to bring the Jewish Community and the African American community closer together, embracing our differences and sharing our commonalities. Through the guidance of my multicultural team which embodies several people from the Jewish Community, specifically Michael Goldman my business partner for 3 decades who discovered me at the Hollywood Improv when I was doing Stand Up as a kid. Through thick and thin he has been by my side. Yelling at me when I talk too much and laughing with me as we’ve always overcome adversity together. I love you my brother, thank you for helping me become the man that I am today. And as we embark on this next “Ncredible” journey together we will bring our two persecuted communities together like we always planned. He and so many gracious people from the Jewish Community are showering me with love and helping to guide me to the Promise land, literally l am excited to announce that I have been invited to Israel which is a lifelong dream where I will receive teachings, lessons and truth about the Jewish history. As someone who is in pursuit for my PHD in Theology and Divinity and just received a degree in Criminal Justice from the Great Howard University, this will be an enriching, enlightening and overall exciting trip!

As for Viacom, who is now on the wrong side of history, I will continue to pray for you. I don’t blame any individual, I blame the oppressive and racist infrastructure. Systemic racism is what this world was built on and was the subject in which I was attempting to highlight in the recent clips that have been circulating from my podcast. If I have furthered the hate speech, I wholeheartedly apologize.

But now I am the one making demands. I demand full ownership of my billion dollar “Wild ‘N Out” brand that I created, and they will continue to misuse and destroy without my leadership! I demand that the hate and back door bullying cease and while we are at it, now that the truth is out, I demand the Apology!

ViacomCBS is the parent company of MTV, which first aired “Wild ‘N Out” before the show moved to VH1, and the cable channel TeenNick, a spin-off of the Nickelodeon network that is geared towards adolescents. Cannon was also an executive producer and chairman of TeenNick.

ViacomCBS said that Cannon did not attempt to contact Redstone.

“It is absolutely untrue that Nick Cannon reached out to the Chair of ViacomCBS,” a company spokesperson told Variety. Regarding Cannon’s claim about ads related to Floyd and Taylor, the ViacomCBS rep referenced a previous statement from a company spokesperson who said the ad block was related to a show called “Revenge Prank,” and that “we didn’t want to be insensitive by placing ads for it next to important and serious topics, such as Black Lives Matter. This is standard practice we use with our media agency to ensure that our ads don’t come across as tone-deaf or disrespectful.”

On Tuesday, a ViacomCBS spokesperson told The Algemeiner that it was ending its partnership with Cannon following the antisemitic comments he made on his podcast.

“ViacomCBS condemns bigotry of any kind and we categorically denounce all forms of antisemitism,” the spokesperson said. “We have spoken with Nick Cannon about an episode of his podcast ‘Cannon’s Class’ on YouTube, which promoted hateful speech and spread antisemitic conspiracy theories.”

“While we support ongoing education and dialogue in the fight against bigotry, we are deeply troubled that Nick has failed to acknowledge or apologize for perpetuating antisemitism, and we are terminating our relationship with him,” the spokesperson added. “We are committed to doing better in our response to incidents of antisemitism, racism, and bigotry. ViacomCBS will have further announcements on our efforts to combat hate of all kinds.”

The American Jewish Committee (AJC) on Wednesday applauded ViacomCBS for firing Cannon.

The network said that Mr. Cannon had promoted “hateful speech” during a recent episode of “Cannon’s Class,” his YouTube podcast.

Cannon still hosts the musical game show “The Masked Singer” that airs on Fox, which is not part of ViacomCBS. He hosted “America’s Got Talent” on NBC from 2009-2016 and is also launching a syndicated daytime talk show in September with Lionsgate’s Debmar-Mercury.

Fox and Debmar-Mercury did not immediately respond to The Algemeiner’s requests for comments on Cannon’s antisemitic remarks.

On June 30, Cannon shared on YouTube an interview he did last year with rapper Richard “Professor Griff” Griffin for “Cannon’s Class.” Griffin was fired from the hip hop group Public Enemy in 1989 after making antisemitic comments, such as the claim that Jews were responsible for “the majority of wickedness that goes on across the globe,” in an interview with The Washington Times.

Griffin stood by his past remarks during his appearance on “Cannon’s Class” and also outlined an antisemitic conspiracy theory about how Black Africans were the real Jews.

Cannon replied, “You’re speaking facts. There’s no reason to be scared of anything when you’re speaking the truth.”

During the interview, Cannon himself referenced antisemitic conspiracy theories regarding “the Rothschilds, centralized banking, the 13 families, the bloodlines that control everything even outside of America.” He also slammed Jews for criticizing Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a notorious antisemite who has previously referred to Jews as “termites.” Cannon alleged that the “Honorable Minister Farrakhan” was being “silenced”  and “neutralized.”

Cannon addressed his comments in a string of Twitter posts on Monday, July 13, saying, “I do not condone hate speech nor the spread of hateful rhetoric,” and “I hold myself accountable for this moment and take full responsibility.” He later said in an interview with Fast Money that he would not “bow down” with an apology.

Regarding his praise of Farrakhan, he said, “I can’t be responsible for however long Minister Farrakhan has been ministering and things that he said…But I condemn any hate speech. I don’t care who said it. I don’t care if my dad said it. I don’t care if Farrakhan said it. If anyone is saying something hateful or demonic, I don’t support that at all.”

Stephen Lamonby, lat 73, wykładowca na Solent University w Southampton, wypowiedział te słowa podczas spotkania i inną pracowniczką akademicką, informowała “Daily Mail”.

Do 2019 roku Żydzi – którzy stanowią zaledwie 0,2 procenta populacji świata – powinni byli zdobyć dwie Nagrody Nobla. Zdobyli 206.

To jest 40 procent nagród w ekonomii, 30 procent nagród w medycynie, 25 procent nagród w fizyce, 20 procent nagród w chemii, 15 procent nagród w literaturze i 10 procent nagród pokojowych. Żydzi zdobyli 27%  przyznanych Fields Medal, 30% Abel Prize i 40% Wolf Prize, znowu zupełnie nieproporcjonalnie do swojej liczebności.

Moralność odwrócona do góry nogami? Przyzwyczajcie się.

The National Insurance Institute will transfer coronavirus grants into the bank accounts of 1.2 million Israeli families with children below the age of 18 today.

Each family will receive NIS 500 for the first to fourth child (inclusive), and from the fifth child onwards they will receive NIS 300 per child.

The grants will be transferred to bank accounts for which child allowances are paid on a regular basis and will include children born in the month of July.

According to the Treasury’s calculations, these are almost three million children who will receive a grant and the total payments will be one billion and 450 million shekels.

This is the first phase of the second coronavirus grant promised by the Prime Minister and the Fiance Minister. In the next phase, a sum of NIS 750 will be transferred to each adult citizen.

Meir Spiegler, the director general of the National Insurance Institute, said that the organization “has never undertaken a project of this scope, with a grant for every citizen.”

“The money will be transferred to the eligible beneficiaries until every last citizen receives the grants he deserves,” Spiegler promised.
