The Oldest Video Footage of Jerusalem You Will Ever See

This segment of the full 70-minute documentary “Jewish Life in Palestine”, filmed by Noah Sokolovsky of the East Odessa Company in 1913 to be shown at the 11th Zionist Congress. Sokolovsky filmed in Tel Aviv-Jaffa (just four years before all the Jews of that city were expelled by the Turks), Petach Tikvah, where oranges are being picked and sent to Jaffa for export. He also filmed religious Jews on the Sabbath in Zichron Yaakov’s famous vineyard and winery town, the building of the famous Technion University in Haifa, the northern settlement of Rosh Pinna, the Sea of the Galilee, Tiberias and much more.
The company and film producer, Sokolovsky, spent 2 months filming and then created a movie translated into 3 languages for the Congress. After being presented at the Congress, the film was lost. Interestingly enough, the original negatives of the film were found in 1997 in France. Restored by Israeli historical documentary filmmaker, Yaakov Gross, the movie was shown at Jewish film festivals and reviewed by the New York Times.
This segment of the movie shows the ride on the train from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the Temple Mount where Jews were not allowed to enter, Chassidic Jews at the Western Wall (“Wall of Tears”) on Passover, biblical sites east of the Temple Mount, the gravesite of Simon the Pious (from the Mishnaic period), school children from the Mizrachi “Ezra” schools, classes at the Bezalel School of Art of the Hebrew University.
The movie is narrated by famous singer and actor Yehoram Gaon and is truly a historical treasure not to be missed!

Iran slaps sanctions on 15 US companies for supporting Israel

Iran slaps sanctions on 15 US companies for supporting Israel

Firms, including one based in Tel Aviv, accused of selling arms and settlement homes; move seems to be largely symbolic as none appear to do any business with Tehran

Iran will impose sanctions on 15 US companies for their support for Israel and its “terrorist actions,” state news agency IRNA said Sunday.
The decision, which is largely symbolic because the firms do not do business with Iran, comes two days after the US announced new sanctions on a number of foreign firms accused of collaborating with Iran’s weapons program.
“A total of 15 US companies have been sanctioned by Iran over their support for Israeli crimes and terrorism,” a statement from Tehran’s Foreign Ministry read, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.

Iran’s sanctions target US firms that provide arms and equipment to Israel “for use against the Palestinians,” IRNA said.
“All transactions with these firms are forbidden, their assets will be seized and their officials will not be able to obtain a visa,” it added.

Among the firms listed were Beni Tal, an Israeli defense contractor based in Tel Aviv founded by a former bodyguard for prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. The company does not have any US offices listed.

Another company M7 Aerospace, is owned by Israel’s Elbit Systems.

Other firms include United Technologies, ITT Corporation, Magnum Research INC, Military Armament Corporation and Bushmaster Firearms International.

The list also included Re/Max Real Estate, which Tehran accused of “buying and selling homes in settlements located in the occupied territories.”

Tensions have mounted between Tehran and Washington since US President Donald Trump took office in January.

On Friday, Washington announced sanctions against foreign firms and individuals over allegedly collaborating with the weapons programs of Iran and North Korea.

Trump has repeatedly criticized a July 2015 deal between Iran and world powers that saw the Islamic Republic curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Washington last month imposed new sanctions on individuals and companies supporting Iran’s ballistic missile program and on its elite Revolutionary Guards.

US lawmakers are now seeking to further increase pressure, proposing a new law that would see Iran’s Revolutionary Guards listed as a terrorist organization.

Times of Israel staff contributed to this report.

France, Germany, India and Italy to join previous participants Greece, Poland and US for massive exercise with IAF

Israel will host air forces from seven countries this fall for a drill hailed as the largest exercise ever held in the skies above Israel.

France, Germany, India and Italy will be actively joining previous participants Greece, Poland and the US, in what Lt. Col. Richard Hecht, the IAF’s international affairs chief, hailed as the biggest air exercise to take place in Israel’s skies, according to a report in Defense News Thursday.

Nearly 100 aircraft and several hundred crew will take part in the latest two-week drill, which has been held twice so far, in 2013 and 2015.

As in the past, this year’s event is expected to see hundreds of sorties throughout the nation’s airspace as participants practice air-to-air battles, ground attacks on fixed- and moving targets, and maneuvering among threats from surface-to-air batteries and shoulder-launched missiles, Defense News said.

Officers and other representatives from nearly 40 countries will also attend.

“People are seeing there’s a lot to learn from Israel. In our tiny airspace and in the environment around us, things are so intense. The Russians are here. … Many of the world’s air forces are passing through here on their way to operations in Syria and elsewhere in the region. So we provide a sort of battle lab in which forces can hone a spectrum of skills needed to combat growing threats,” Hecht said.

Israeli planes have carried out a number of sorties against weapons convoys in Syria, reportedly raising tensions with Russia.
