POCZĄTEK KOŃCA W MARCU-68.

POCZĄTEK KOŃCA W MARCU-68.

Eli Barbur

Combatting the Haman of Today

Combatting the Haman of Today

Much has been made of the timing of Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress. Delivered just two days before Purim (just over one day for those celebrating in Israel), it conjures up memories of a historic fight for survival against a nihilist enemy that was bent our national destruction.

The holiday of Purim celebrates a triumphant end to a harrowing saga, when Haman the Amalekite presented his Final Solution to Achashveirosh. Haman did not question God’s existence, but rather His willingness to intervene on behalf of a nation that “rebelled against its God (during the first commonwealth) and still have not changed their wicked ways.” (Esther Rabbah 7:13)

Haman sensed a weakness in the bond between God and His chosen nation when he observed its frivolous conduct at the royal feast in Shushan, and seized on the opportunity to permanently break that sacred link. Only through the efforts of Mordechai and Esther to focus their nation on the importance of reconnecting with its Maker (through fasting, prayer and repentance) were the Jews able to overcome the terrible decree of annihilation and emerge victorious over their archrival.

Of course, it was this same assault on the spiritual connection between the Jews and their God that inspired the Nazis, the modern day Amalekites, to attempt to achieve their goals.

Despite Hitler’s stated objective to combat attacks on German nationalism and racial purity, ideals that the Jews, in particular, had allegedly defiled through their corrupt modernistic and leftist leanings, the Nazis focused primarily on the Jewish religion, and aimed to completely debase the possessors of that special heritage.

As Emil L. Fackenheim expressed it in What is Judaism, “The whole purpose of the [Nazi] program was to reduce Israel to excrement. That program included the God of Israel.”

Historian Lucy Dawidowicz concurred:

The refinements of cruelty were reserved for pious Jews and rabbis, whose traditional Jewish garb and whose beard and side locks identified them as quintessentially Jewish. The Germans deliberately chose observant Jews to force them to desecrate and destroy the sacred articles of Judaism, even to set fire to synagogues. In some places the Germans piled the Torah scrolls in the marketplace, compelling the Jews to set fire to the pile, and dance around it. Another German pleasure was “feeding” pork to pious Jews, usually in the presence of an invited audience. [The War Against the Jews, pp. 201-202]

Emerging deal reveals West’s reluctance to avert a nuclear Iran

Emerging deal reveals West’s reluctance to avert a nuclear Iran

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was right to decry the emerging world powers’ nuclear deal with Iran. It is a bad deal that includes a sunset clause upon whose expiration Iran is home free, a massive centrifuge infrastructure for Tehran to retain, and a naïve belief that Iran – which continues to stonewall the IAEA – will change its spots and forthwith comply with intrusive inspection.

Any Israeli success in winning better terms should be welcomed, because it will be impossible to demand from Iran tomorrow anything that is omitted from the signed agreement today.
We have also learned during the negotiation process that previous United Nations resolutions hampering Iran from procuring bomb-making components will be superseded and shredded by the most recently signed agreement.

While the final text and terms of the agreement are important, of equal importance – to paraphrase Montesquieu – is the spirit of the agreement. Even an optimally worded agreement is useless unless the signatories are prepared to punish Iran for violating it.
Israel learned this lesson when UN Security Council Resolution 1701 terminated Israel’s Second Lebanon War in 2006. The resolution’s most meaningful clause was “the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon, so that, pursuant to the Lebanese cabinet decision of July 27, 2006, there will be no weapons or authority in Lebanon other than that of the Lebanese State.”

Nobody was willing to enforce this clause against Hezbollah, and as a result the organization is more powerful than the Lebanese army that the resolution sought to make the country’s exclusive military force.

Over and beyond the unfavorable terms of the agreement with Iran are the massive concessions the world plans on making. They demonstrate a lack of will that justifies Netanyahu’s accusation that the West “has given up” on trying to prevent an Iranian bomb.
Netanyahu is aptly focusing his efforts on the United States and Europeans. It was a foregone conclusion that Russia and China who, like Iran, form part of what Prof. Walter Russell Mead has called the axis of weevils – revisionist powers who want to chip away at the international status quo – and who would not be overly despondent if Iran got the bomb.
Russia, as reportedly noted by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, is looking forward to the conclusion of a deal that would lift the arms embargo on Tehran and facilitate Russian-Iranian military cooperation.

If you believe that Russia will serve as an effective and vigilant custodian of Iran’s enriched uranium, you must surely also believe that its leader, President Vladimir Putin, will guarantee a transparent investigation of Boris Nemtsov’s murder.
Russia will treat accusations of Iranian violations in the same vein that it treated the use of chemical warfare by Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The disappointment thus focuses primarily on the Obama administration. An American policy of “all options are on the table” has become a policy that the military option is definitively off the table.

Administration spokespersons now argue that the military option is useless because it will accelerate Iran’s march to the bomb and its removal of the nuclear infrastructure to impregnable underground locations.
If the military option is so terrible to contemplate when Iran lacks nuclear weapons, how will it look when Tehran does a Pyongyang and tests a bomb that can be mounted on its intercontinental delivery systems?
Compare this aversion to war with the “Great Prophet 9” maneuvers conducted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, culminating with the destruction of a mock-up of the U.S. carrier Nimitz.

Iran signals it is willing to risk a military confrontation; the West has signaled that this prospect is unthinkable.
Sham agreements are drafted to deodorize the stench. This tactic applies not only to Iran but to Ukraine as well, where Putin has now added two separatist enclaves in East Ukraine to his annexation of Crimea.
When Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum in 1994 and gave up its nuclear force, it was granted assurances of its territorial integrity, reaffirmed in 2009, by the United States and Russia, who obliged to “refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine.”

Ukraine was wooed by the European Union and exhorted to draw closer to the West and move further away from its Soviet past. When it did so, and Putin expressed his displeasure first by employing the energy [natural gas] weapon and then by outright invasion, the West hastily patched together cease-fire after cease-fire. It refused to even supply Kiev with weaponry that could have possibly convinced Putin that the price of military invasion could prove prohibitive.

Kiev has not been allowed to fight, just as Israel would not be allowed to attack Iran’s nuclear program.
Kiev has to accept the fact that Ukraine’s Finlandization at best, or dismemberment at worst, is more important to Putin than the West. The deal with Iran carries the same message: Tehran is more committed to getting the bomb than the West is committed to denying Iran that achievement.

Go, Bibi, go

Go, Bibi, go

Dror Eydar

Ever since both houses of the U.S. Congress invited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address them on the dangers of Iran and radical Islam, people have been trying to cook something up against him. The accusations began with Netanyahu being blamed for doing an end-run around the White House, which wasn’t informed that he had been invited, and thereby endangering our relations with the United States. The New York Times and its satellites led the combined attack. And now The Times had to publish a correction saying sorry, we made a mistake (and so misled you) — the White House was in fact informed, and only afterward was the prime minister invited.

It also turns out that the protocol of inviting Netanyahu to speak had not changed from the previous time, in 2011, when Rep. John Boehner invited Netanyahu to speak before Congress. Then, too, the White House was informed and chose not to respond, apparently because of President Barack Obama’s own election considerations. The American president convinced his fans that he doesn’t want to interfere in the Israeli elections, but in fact his adviser is here, consulting for left-wing organizations.

So who was marketing the lie that Obama hadn’t been informed about the Netanyahu invitation — a report that prompted a witch hunt we couldn’t escape? The inevitable conclusion is that the responsible parties come from Obama’s inner circle.

Professor Jeffrey Herf of the University of Maryland, an international expert in Nazi propaganda prior to and during World War II, knows a thing or two about superpowers’ efforts to stop evil regimes. After Jeffrey Goldberg published the White House curses against Netanyahu two months ago, Herf described the president’s behavior toward the prime minister as “trash talk diplomacy.”

“In October … the conduct of the foreign relations of the United States of America reached a low point when an anonymous ‘senior Obama administration official’ … called the prime minister of Israel a ‘chickenshit,'” Herf wrote, characterizing the tactic as “trash talk diplomacy” that he assessed as damaging to U.S.-Israeli relations, particularly when it came to stopping Iran’s race toward a nuclear bomb.

In short, Obama’s strategic move was not aimed at Iran, but rather toward Netanyahu, and this was nothing new. This move was what put the well-being of the free world at risk, not Netanyahu’s speech before Congress, which is intended to do just the opposite.

The Weekly Standard once described this as a strategy invented by Obama’s former adviser David Plouffe called “stray voltage.” It involves creating a media event that turns a minor subject into one that everyone talks about — the old tired nonsense that Netanyahu’s speech endangers Israeli-U.S. relations, for example — so they won’t busy themselves with Obama’s failures on Iran and radical Islam. Similarly, Secretary of State John Kerry misquoted Mossad head Tamir Pardo, making it seem as if the latter disagreed with the prime minister and believed that sanctions against Iran shouldn’t be increased, which Pardo himself refuted. This is how the method works, with the complicity of the media. Anything to avoid taking a stand against the evil Iranian regime.

National security does not begin and end with elections. Netanyahu didn’t just start working against a nuclearized Iran. It looks like he understands better than Obama and the president’s advisers just how serious the situation is. That’s why he was invited to speak. Here, just a few days ago we were informed of harsh, surprising criticism of Obama by senior European Union officials, who complained that he was looking to reach a bad deal with Iran and keep it on the verge of developing nuclear weapons in exchange for a few years’ quiet.

There are no games in matters like these. If it’s necessary to beat down every door and turn over worlds to prevent the insane Iranian leadership from getting a nuclear bomb, that’s what will be done, even at the cost of complicating relations with Obama. Congress understands that, and the citizens of the U.S. understand that. During World War II, the world was silent, and American Jews were ashamed to cause an uproar over what was happening to their brothers in Europe. Today, too, there are a few court Jews who are ashamed of us. They recall the German Jews of the late 19th century, whom the Zionist movement disturbed from assimilating into German society. Zionism portrayed them as having double loyalties and Palestina as their true land. We don’t live by their dictates. Jews will no longer stay silent. Go, Bibi, go.

ISRAEL IS…by Natalie Portman

ISRAEL IS…by Natalie Portman

6Where I was born. Where I ate my first Popsicle and used a proper toilet for the first time. Where some of my 18-year-old friends spend their nights in bunkers sleeping with their helmets on. Where security guards are the only jobs in surplus. Where deserts bloom and pioneer stories are sentimentalized. Where a thorny, sweet cactus is the symbol of the ideal Israeli. Where immigrating to Israel is called “ascending” and emigrating from Israel is called “descending.” Where my grandparents were not born, but where they were saved.

Where the year passes with the season of olives, of almonds, of dates. Where the transgressive pig or shrimp dish speaks defiantly from a Jerusalem menu. Where, despite substantial exception, secularism is the rule. Where wine is religiously sweet. Where “Arabic homes” is a positive real estate term with no sense of irony. Where there is endless material for dark humor. Where there are countless words for “to bother,” but no single one yet for “to pleasure.” Where laughter is the currency; jokes the religion. Where political parties multiply more quickly than do people. Where to become religious is described as “returning to an answer” and becoming secular “returning to a question.”

Where six citizens have won Nobel prizes in 50 years. Where the first one earned an Olympic gold in 2004 for sailing (an Israeli also won the bronze for judo). Where there is snow two hours north and hamsin (desert wind) two hours south. Where Moses never was allowed to walk, but whose streets we litter. Where the language in which Abraham spoke to Isaac before he was to sacrifice him has been resuscitated to include the words for “sweatshirt” and “schadenfreude” and “chemical warfare” and “press conference.” Where the muezzin chants, and the church bells sound and the shofars cry freely at the Wall. Where the shopkeepers bargain. Where the politicians bargain. Where there will one day be peace but never quiet.

Where I was born; where my insides refuse to abandon.
