France has belatedly woken up to the jihadist threat

The 2012 attack on a Jewish school in Toulouse were the writing on the wall, but France did not legislate for surveillance of terror suspects; protection of Jewish institutions in the republic has also been a failure.

France’s counter-terrorism units on Friday acted competently and with sophistication, and were even well-equipped for events in which hostages were taken. In both of Friday’s raids – at the print shop where the two Charlie Hebdo gunmen were holed up and the siege at the kosher supermarket in Paris – they systematically and diligently gathered intelligence, using closed circuit surveillance cameras and even a man hiding in the print shop to devise a plan of action. They had also placed door-breaching explosives in both locations, which helped them enter quickly when they did decide to do so.

Another wise decision was to storm both places simultaneously, to prevent both sets of hostage-takers from knowing via the media or by phone hacking that a raid had been carried out in the other location. So, a few minutes after the operation started in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele, forces stormed the supermarket in eastern Paris. The French Interior Ministry had issued a misleading message beforehand that it intended to negotiate the terrorists at both sites, and French television, lo and behold, agreed not to broadcast images of the troops preparing for the raids. Yes, there is such thing as responsible media.

Ingenuity, skill and practice paid off. Unfortunately, instances of terrorists barricaded in with hostages usually end in casualties. This time most of the victims were killed by the terrorist at the supermarket in Paris and not during the action to bring the siege to an end. This time, they were Jews.

The French Interior Ministry may perhaps be proud of both operations conducted in parallel to rescue the hostages, but that’s not what really matters. The main thing is not to allow such situations to arise at all – and here is where the French authorities can be found to be incompetent, if not unforgivably complacent.

There have been numerous murderous terrorist attacks in recent years on French citizens by Muslim fanatics who have returned from the Middle East. It was also apparent that jihad would continue to flow at an increasing rate from France and other European countries to the Middle East – and from there back to France and the rest of Europe, once the jihadists had been trained and brainwashed and left devoid of any tolerance for the values enshrined in Western democracies.

This is not a clash of civilizations, it is not even a clash of religions; it is rather an intolerance for any other values, in whose name it is possible to commit any crime. France already knew that well, long before the establishment of Islamic State.

Mohammed Merah – who in 2012 murdered four Jews at a Jewish school in Toulouse and killed a French soldier – was the writing on the wall. France is also involved, along with the United States, in action against radical Islam in the Middle East and Africa, and this makes it a target for revenge attacks by jihadists. In light of this, France should have long operated like the United States, making legislative changes to allow monitoring of all forms, including wiretapping and electronic surveillance of its citizens, even if it touched on individual rights to a certain degree.

Nazi diary reveals brutal tactics employed against Lodz Jews

Recently uncovered diaries written by Nazi officers meticulously document horrifying occurrences within Lodz ghetto.

Seventy years after the liquidation of the Lodz ghetto during World War II, a diary containing meticulous documentation of day-to-day life within its walls, as depicted by Nazi officers, was recently uncovered, it was reported Thursday.

Using laundered language, the Germans describe their treatment of the local Jews, including how they punished them over thoughts of escape, and their use of brutal methods to extract information from the “smart alecks” among them.

During World War II, Lodz was home to the second largest Jewish ghetto. Over 200,000 Jews are said to have passed through the ghetto, many later going to the notorious Auschwitz death camp. Only 10,000 are said to have survived.

‘Hunt after crosbreed’

The Shem Olam Institute for Education, Documentation and Research on Faith and the Holocaust recently managed to get hold of the rare find which the Nazis attempted to hide, and has now revealed it, on the occasion of Yom Hakaddish Haklali, the memorial day for victims of the Holocaust whose dates of death are unknown.

The difficult text shows another aspect of the violent and brutal regime directed against the locals, which showed no patience to those who failed to obey cruel orders.

The diary, the majority of which has not yet been translated into Hebrew, features descriptions of the use of torture in interrogations of Jews who are termed as “smart alecks”, arrests of Jews suspected of possessing “prohibited items”, and an account of contacts with the Judenrat, a Jewish governing council, from which the officers extracted incriminating inside information against Jews who did not adhere to the strict rules.

“The Jew Goldberg Meyer was caught after we received information that he was pretending to be a Pole, and trading textile products that he had acquired in the past,” the German officers wrote in one of the diary’s pages.

The Birth of the Israeli Air Force

ABOVE AND BEYOND: The Birth of the Israeli Air Force

produced by: Nancy Spielberg, directed by: Roberta Grossman and written by: Sophie Sartain

In 1948, a group of World War II pilots volunteered to fight for Israel in the War of Independence. As members of “Machal” — volunteers from abroad — this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war, preventing the possible annihilation of Israel at the very moment of its birth; they also laid the groundwork for the Israeli Air Force.

In 1944 Germany had started production of the Me-109 near Prague producing G-12 and G-14 type aircraft. After the retreat of the German army the production facility was virtually undamaged. The post-war Czech government ordered the continuation of the production. So about 20 G-14′s, named Avia S-99 and two G-12′s named CS-99 were produced.

There were plans for a large scale production to equip the new Czech air force. In September 1945 the stock of DB 605 engines was lost in a fire in the factory where they were stored and an alternative powerplant had to be found. The only available engine were the Jumo 211F and 211H intended for Heinkel He-111 bombers. The 109 airframe was adapted for the Jumo engine and the first Jumo engined S-199 first flew in March 1947. The S-199 was not a good fighter. Performance was disappointing.

To improve pilot vision a new “bubble” hood was fitted. Standard armament were 2 MG 131′s over the engine and two MG 151/20 under the wing. The S-199 and the two seat trainer CS-199 served for some years with the Czech air force but was soon replaced.

In 1948 25 of the S-199 fighters were sold to the new state of Israel where they served during the 1948 war fighting against Egyptian Spitfires!. In Israel the type was disliked by the pilots and prone to accidents. After the war in 1949 the surviving aircraft were soon decommissioned.

Above and Beyond is the story of these brave men.

The first major feature-length documentary about the foreign airmen in the War of Independence, Above and Beyond brings together new interviews with pilots from the ’48 War, as well as leading scholars and statesmen, including President Shimon Peres, to present an extraordinary, little-known tale with reverberations up to the present day.

W dniach 12-14 grudnia 2014 r. Hamas obchodził 27. rocznice powstania licznymi marszami i wiecami w całej Strefie Gazy, w których uczestniczyły dziesiątki tysięcy ludzi. W głównym wiecu w północnej części Strefy uczestniczyło według doniesień 100 tysięcy ludzi [1]. Obchody rocznicowe obejmowały także dużą paradę wojskową militarnego skrzydła Hamasu, Brygad Izz Al-Din Al-Kassam [2].

Wysocy rangą przedstawiciele Hamasu, którzy przemawiali podczas marszy i wieców, podkreślali, że ruch ten nigdy nie uzna tworu syjonistycznego ani nie zadowoli się państwem palestyńskim w granicach 1967 r. i wzywali do kontynuowania marszu na drodze oporu i dżihadu aż cała Palestyna, od rzeki do morza, zostanie wyzwolona. Rzecznik Brygad Al-Kassam, Abu Ubaida, dziękował Iranowi za zaopatrzenie Hamasu w fundusze, broń i pociski rakietowe, pomagając w ten sposób w zbudowaniu armii z wieloma nowoczesnymi jednostkami.
