Answering a different call: Americans who fight for Israel


(CNN) — Daniel Flesch, then a college student at the University of Illinois, had heard too much anti-Israeli sentiment.

He had family members who had survived the Holocaust and felt compelled to fight back at what he perceived as a growing level of anti-Semitism in America. So in 2010, he joined Israel’s military.

“I just didn’t want to sit on the sidelines,” the now-26-year-old said in an interview via Skype. “I wanted to actually fight back against those who think Israel and the Jewish people should not exist.”

Pod budynkiem ambasady Izraela przy ulicy Krzywickiego na Ochocie, po dwóch stronach jezdni, odbyły się w piątkowe popołudnie głośne demonstracje pro- i antyizraelskie. Tuż pod budynkiem placówki politykę władz Izraela wspierało kilkudziesięciu Izraelczyków z flagami swojego państwa. W kierunku stojących po drugiej stronie ulicy Palestyńczyków głośno krzyczeli: “Tylko złamas wspiera Hamas” lub “Szkoda czasu dla Hamasu”. Palestyńczycy nie pozostawali dłużni. Skandowali po angielsku m.in. “Free Palestine”, czyli Wolna Palestyna. Większość demonstrujących przeciw Izraelowi to poza Palestyńczykami także Arabowie z innych państw Bliskiego Wschodu i północnej Afryki, a także Irańczycy. Wielu z nich miało na głowach arafatki i flagi Palestyny. Jedni i drudzy krzyczeli w stronę przeciwników “mordercy”. Wśród obu grup widać też było Polaków.

Demonstrantów rozdzielał kordon policji. Ulica Krzywickiego przez ponad godzinę była wyłączona z ruchu. Na szczęście nie doszło do żadnych incydentów.

Rare photos from ‘underground Gaza’ give glimpse of tunnel threat

Photographs taken by photographer Jack Guez show tunnels dug by Hamas from Gaza into Israel. IDF troops still occupied with uncovering and destroying more tunnels: ‘Every day of combat allows us to inflict greater damage on this infrastructure.’

The photographs illustrates the threat in full force – the tunnels are professionally constructed, some reinforced with cement, equipped with rail tracks, power cables and a communications system. Hamas has invested a fortune in building the tunnels meant for terrorist attacks.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit announced on Friday that since the ground operation was first launched, IDF troops have uncovered 31 tunnels, 11 of which that were destroyed and taken out of use. Earlier, GOC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Sami Turgeman held a press briefing and addressed the threat posed by the tunnels
