‘He’s an American, You Idiots!’ Social Media Erupts After Protest of Jerry Seinfeld Show Over His Israel Support

Social media users called a large pro-Palestinian protest outside Jerry Seinfeld’s stand-up comedy show in downtown Syracuse, New York, “misguided” and said that targeting him for being an American Jew who supports Israel was antisemitic.

Hundreds of activists reportedly participated in the “Shut It Down for Palestine” demonstration on Friday. The rally was organized by the Syracuse chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, the Syracuse Collective for Palestinian Liberation, the Resilient Indigenous Action Collective and the Syracuse chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The protesters marched in front of the Landmark Theatre, where Seinfeld’s stand-up show took place, and called for the event to be shut down because of the Jewish comedian’s support for Israel.

Following the Hamas terrorist attacks on Oct. 7, Seinfeld joined hundreds of Hollywood celebrities in signing two open letters that condemned Hamas, showed solidarity with Israel, and called for the return of the 240 hostages taken by the Palestinian terrorist organization back to the Gaza Strip. But enraged social media users said this week that protesting Seinfeld’s show in Syracuse made no sense since he is American and not directly tied to Israel or the actions of the Israeli government during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

“Hes [sic] an American you idiots! The pro hamas protesters are so misguided. God help us!” one user on X/Twitter tweeted after the protest, while a separate user wrote that “picketing Jerry Seinfeld for Palestine is the dumbest thing I’ve heard in the last 20 minutes.”

Another user said: “Protesting against Israel at the Seinfeld show in Syracuse? What’s Jerry supposed to do about it? This just in folks, American Jews are, wait for it, American! Blaming us for anything Israel does is Anti-Semitic, pure and simple. It’s gotten out of hand.”

US Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) also commented on the protest. He tweeted that Seinfeld “is an iconic American COMEDIAN who’s also Jewish …  he’s a COMEDIAN not a diplomat or gov official. Stop targeting American Jews. This is wrong.”

“Palestine supporters should NOT be attacking or interfering with a person trying to make a living just because he/she is Jewish” said another user on X.

According to the world’s leading definition of antisemitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel is antisemitic.

The organizers of the Syracuse protest falsely accused Israel of genocide in a statement released on Tuesday, saying that the former Seinfeld star and comedian “is one of several celebrities denying the genocide of Palestinians” for supporting “the fascist IDF’s genocidal bombing of Gaza and its illegal terrorization of the West Bank.”

“Therefore, Palestinian, Arab, Indigenous, and working-class community members could simply not let the show go as usual when more and more of the beautiful lives and stories of Palestinian martyrs are cut short daily by the thousands because of Israel‘s decades-long genocide of Palestinians and Palestine,” the organizers added. “Until Palestine is Free From The River To The Sea, our community will continue to #shutitdown4palestine. An immediate and permanent ceasefire is just the base of our demands. We demand the end to the settler-colonial occupation of both Palestine and Turtle Island.”

The slogan “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” has been widely interpreted as a call for the destruction of Israel, which is located between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, and to have it replaced with “Palestine.”

A vote on a Security Council resolution was pushed off for a second straight day at the Biden administration’s behest.

The vote was scheduled for Monday evening. Then Tuesday morning. It was pushed back to early Tuesday afternoon before another shift to late afternoon, then early evening. Going into Wednesday morning, there is still no resolution on the resolution.

Washington remains Jerusalem’s last line of defense at the United Nations, with the Biden administration again thwarting—for now—a vote on a Security Council resolution effectively calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

The United Arab Emirates-drafted resolution has the backing to pass, save for the United States and its veto power as a permanent member of the council. The United States has already vetoed two Security Council resolutions since the onset of the war, both of which called for a halt to Israel’s military operation to eliminate Hamas.

The current draft contains a number of provisions that draw little if any pushback from Washington, including a call for an “urgent suspension of hostilities” in order to fulfill the resolution’s demand of an unhindered, U.N.-monitored flow of humanitarian aid and fuel into Gaza by land, air and sea.

Also included is a demand for the release of all hostages held in Gaza and for the immediate addressing of their medical needs.

But Washington is fending off a provision that calls for “urgent steps towards a sustainable cessation of hostilities.” The United States and Israel oppose a ceasefire, believing it would only benefit Hamas. Washington has supported pauses in fighting in order to protect civilians and allow for the release of hostages.

The U.S. State Department is also wrangling over the terms of the deconfliction mechanism outlined by the draft resolution, which is meant to coordinate the positions of aid workers and the flow of aid with the Israeli military to avoid any accidental strikes against them.

Additionally, indications are that the Biden administration uneasy with the draft’s proposal that the United Nations be given exclusive oversight of aid delivery, which would necessitate an increased presence of U.N. workers, a civilian observer mission or the deployment of unarmed military observers, according to a menu of options proposed by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. All would require cooperation from Israel at a minimum.

The Israeli mission to the United Nations declined to comment on the nature of discussions surrounding the resolution.

When asked on Tuesday afternoon if an agreement was any closer, Robert Wood, the U.S. deputy ambassador to the United Nations, would only say, “We’re trying. We really are.”

During Tuesday’s regularly-scheduled monthly Security Council meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian file, Wood reiterated Washington’s call for the Council to clearly condemn Hamas, along with the Houthis and other regional actors carrying out terror and threatening peace.

He also said Gaza must no longer be controlled by Hamas, something which the current Council draft resolution makes clear in a provision calling for Gaza and the Palestinian-controlled territory in Judea and Samaria to be united under the auspices of the Palestinian Authority.

The rest of the Security Council, however, was largely critical of Israel, with especially sharp comments coming from Russia.

Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s U.N. envoy, accused Israel of “cleansing” Palestinians in Judea and Samaria “for a long time.”

He also faulted the United States for the failure of the Security Council to take meaningful action in the current war. 

“By now, it should have become obvious to everyone that the stalling of collective efforts within the United Nations is not due to any objective institutional problems, but solely to the hard-headed and selfish ambitions of the American leadership,” said Nebenzia, who has been isolated at the United Nations for vetoing repeatedly any action against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

A vote on the UAE resolution is now scheduled for approximately 11 a.m. E.T. on Wednesday. Should the United States continue to push back, Abu Dhabi has the option to table the resolution for a vote anyway and likely force Washington to use yet another veto, showing its growing isolation and, at the same time, its steadfastness in backing Israel at the global body.

Płonące świece chanukowe symbolizują światło, jakie niosą ze sobą przykazania dane ludziom przez Boga. Tego Boga, który stworzył świat i człowieka. Boga Żydów i chrześcijan.

Ciemność symbolizuje bunt przeciw Bogu, objawiający się w ludzkiej pysze, egoizmie, samouwielbieniu, relatywizmie moralnym.

Grzegorz Braun swoją barbarzyńską akcją stanął po stronie ciemności. Dlaczego? To oczywiste. Z nienawiści. Z nienawiści do Żydów.

Ignorancja

Polityk uzasadnia swoje działanie w sposób nawet bardziej przerażający gigantyczną ignorancją niż sam czyn. W wywiadzie udzielonym Michałowi Cichemu opowiada horrendalne brednie o rzekomym znaczeniu, sensie oraz wymowie święta Chanuka. I o „demonach”. Zapalenie świec chanukowych Braun nazywa „aktem kultu”. „Kultu mrocznego, dzikiego, rasistowskiego, plemiennego, talmudycznego”. Mówi, najwyraźniej o Bogu, który pojawia się w chanukowej narracji, jako o „ukrytym bożku – plemiennym, satanistycznym bóstwie tego plemienia”. 

Czyli według Brauna monoteizm etyczny to satanizm. Trzeba powtórzyć to jeszcze raz: nienawiść go zaślepia. Nienawiść do Żydów.

Grzegorz Braun nazywa Chanukę „świętowaniem ludobójstwa”. 

Absurdalne kłamstwo

To kłamstwo. Absurdalne kłamstwo. Chanuka jest świętem podziękowania za cud, jaki Bóg sprawił w Świątyni Jerozolimskiej. Żydowscy powstańcy, wypędziwszy Greków z Jerozolimy, zastali w zbezczeszczonej Świątyni zapas oliwy do Świątynnej Menory, wystarczający na zaledwie jeden dzień. Jednak palił się on aż osiem dni. To jest cud chanukowy. Kim był Bóg, który uczynił ten cud? To Stworzyciel nieba i ziemi, czyli – w religii chrześcijańskiej – Bóg Ojciec. Dlatego Pierwsza i Druga Księga Machabejska opisujące powstanie religijnych Żydów przeciw Grekom znajdują się w biblijnym kanonie katolickim (i również prawosławnym).

W ówczesnym starożytnym świecie istniała tylko jedna potężna enklawa, w której żyli ludzie wierzący w istnienie Jedynego Boga i postępujący zgodnie z ustalonym przez Niego prawem. Działo się to w Judei – odległym zakątku ówczesnego świata. Politycznie i gospodarczo była to prowincja, ale w wymiarze idei – miejsce wyjątkowo ważne. I także szczególny moment historyczny. Tylko Żydzi byli wówczas monoteistami. Zagrożeniem dla monoteizmu była ekspansywna, atrakcyjna kultura grecka. Proces podporządkowania się tej kulturze to hellenizacja. Znaczna część Żydów ulegała hellenizacji. Poddanie się wpływom greckim musiało oznaczać zerwanie z ideami monoteizmu, ponieważ wartości żydowskie drastycznie różniły się od greckich. Władca grecki Antioch IV Epifanes z dynastii Seleucydów, chcąc przyspieszyć proces hellenizacji, zakazał wyznawania żydowskiej religii. Karał za przestrzeganie jej reguł. Spowodowało to bunt. W latach 165–164 p.n.e. Żydzi pod wodzą Judy Machabeusza wyparli Greków z Judei.

Odwieczny konflikt

Gdy mówimy o wojnie kulturowej, która trwa dziś w europejskim kręgu cywilizacyjnym, musimy pamiętać, że jej początki odnajdziemy w konflikcie pomiędzy hellenizmem a etycznym monoteizmem. Judaizm stawał się wówczas synonimem zaściankowości, plemienności i zacofania w oczach nie tylko greckich najeźdźców, ale także klas wyższych i niektórych kapłanów. Paul Johnson pisze w „Historii Żydów”, że „reformistyczni intelektualiści” żydowscy uważali, iż „Tora pełna jest bajek i absurdalnych zakazów i nakazów”. Zupełnie jak dzisiejsi ateiści czy antyteiści. Ci zhellenizowani Żydzi w swojej krytyce religii przypominali „postępowców” europejskich. Bo też jest to zjawisko obecne we współczesnej kulturze: zarówno judaizm, jak i chrześcijaństwo są dziś traktowane w kategoriach zaściankowości przez kontynuatorów modelu greckiego.

Braun, który stwierdza, że jest katolikiem, staje w konflikcie sprzed ponad dwóch tysięcy lat po stronie politeistycznych greckich wrogów monoteizmu. Bo przecież historia chanukowa to opowieść o zwycięstwie światła monoteizmu etycznego nad ciemnością pogaństwa. To kulminacyjny moment w słynnej, archetypowej opozycji kulturowej pomiędzy Jerozolimą i Atenami, którą Heinrich Heine zdefiniował w słynnym stwierdzeniu, że „dla Greków piękno było prawdą, podczas gdy dla Hebrajczyków prawda była pięknem”. Jednak ten konflikt przecież wcale nie wygasł. Dziś jest to starcie pomiędzy wartościami wspólnymi dla judaizmu i chrześcijaństwa a współczesną ślepą fascynacją „postępem”. Ten „postęp” głosi brak Boga, wyższość natury nad człowiekiem, relatywizm moralny, permisywizm, ideologię gender, płynność płciową, małżeństwa jednopłciowe, eugenikę.

Co mieli Grecy na swoich sztandarach?

Przede wszystkim swoich bogów. A bogowie greccy pełni byli ludzkich wad i namiętności. Politeizm grecki kształtował bogów wedle wizerunku ludzi, podczas gdy judaizm starał się kształtować ludzi według wizerunku Boga. Bogowie z Olimpu byli mściwi, zdominowani przez seks i pożądanie władzy, o którą walczyli między sobą. Uganiający się, często pod postacią zwierząt, za śmiertelnikami – zarówno kobietami, jak i mężczyznami. Grecy wiązali swoje bóstwa z Naturą – począwszy od lasów, źródeł, pól, rzek, aż do ziemi, nieba, mórz i oceanów. I składali im ofiary z ludzi. Zeus ścigający pięknego Ganimedesa symbolizuje fakt, że kultura grecka tolerowała chaos w sferze seksualności i ceniła pederastię. Homoseksualizm męski był powszechnie tolerowany. Antropolog Michel Foucault podkreśla w „Histoire de la sexualité”, że akceptacja zachowań homoseksualnych w starożytnej Grecji była efektem greckiego sposobu postrzegania płci: seks mężczyzny z mężczyzną nie był czymś innym od seksu z kobietą.

Konsekwencją greckiego postrzegania bóstw było postrzeganie człowieka przez Greków. Cenili go przede wszystkim za jego walory estetyczne (harmonia) i naturalne dary ciała i ducha, takie jak siła, odwaga, spryt, inteligencja, zdolności artystyczne, militarne, sportowe. Wynikała z tego pogarda dla tych, którzy nie spełniają wymogów estetycznych: Grecy mordowali więc kalekie i brzydkie dzieci (akceptował ten zwyczaj Platon, popierał Arystoteles), bo ich życie nie stanowiło żadnej wartości. Analogie ze współczesną przymusową eutanazją (np. w nazistowskich Niemczech) i eugeniką są aż zbyt oczywiste. Warto także wspomnieć np. o cenionych wśród „postępowców” poglądach filozofa i etyka Petera Singera, który zaakceptowałby prawo do pozbawiania życia dzieci do czwartego tygodnia po urodzeniu, uzasadniając to między innymi stwierdzeniem: „W starożytnej Grecji dziecko było włączane do społeczności dopiero po 28 dniach od narodzin – przed upłynięciem tego okresu można było je porzucić gdzieś w górach”.

Ideały monoteizmu

Jakie natomiast były poglądy monoteistów, czyli religijnych Żydów, których Grecy próbowali pozbawić prawa kultywowania religii?

Bóg czczony w Świątyni Jerozolimskiej to – w przeciwieństwie do bóstw greckich – istota aseksualna i duchowa, idealnie łącząca w sobie przeciwstawne cechy: sprawiedliwość i umiejętność wybaczania. Człowiek ma naśladować Boga, a więc musi uznać wyższość etyki nad instynktem, wyższość zasad moralnych nad tym, co wynika z jego ułomnej natury, którą musi poskramiać. 

Monoteizm wyraźnie uznawał podległość fizycznego świata wobec człowieka („napełnijcie ziemię, posiądźcie ją i panujcie”) i wyraźnie separował Boga od Natury, jako jej twórcę, a nie jej część. Żydowski, a później chrześcijański światopogląd głosi, że człowiek jest w centrum wszechświata; Natura została więc stworzona dla człowieka. I nie można jej czcić, bo jest pozbawiona moralności (w świecie Natury silniejszy pożera słabszego).
Monoteizm wprowadziły porządek w pierwotny chaos seksualizmu ludzkiego, zakazując wszelkich jego form poza heteroseksualnymi, bo te zostały uznane za najbardziej korzystne społecznie. I wyraźnie stwierdzając, że istnieją tylko dwie płci. Ideał ten przejęło i kontynuowało przez tysiące lat chrześcijaństwo. Jest to jedno z tych dokonań monoteizmu, które najbardziej przeobraziły świat i miały wpływ na postęp cywilizacyjny. I wreszcie sprawa najważniejsza: żydowscy monoteiści głosili, że każdy – absolutnie każdy człowiek! – jest stworzony „na obraz i podobieństwo” Boga – co oznacza, że każdy człowiek nosi w sobie nieskończoną wartość, a życie ludzkie jest świętością. Ta idea była całkiem obca światopoglądowi greckiemu. Jest to jedna z najbardziej uniwersalnych, trwałych opozycji pomiędzy „Atenami” a „Jerozolimą”.

To tych wartości bronili żydowscy powstańcy występując zbrojnie przeciwko Grekom. Właśnie obronę tych wartości upamiętnia święto Chanuka. I zarazem to te wartości monoteizmu etycznego symbolicznie atakuje Grzegorz Braun, nazywając zapalenie świec chanukowych „aktem mrocznego kultu”.

Braun nic nie zrozumiał

Nie znam poglądów posła Brauna, ale z jego przynależności do Konfederacji wynoszę wrażenie, że ideały monoteizmu etycznego powinny być mu bliskie. Co więc spowodowało, że zaatakował ich symbol, czyli światła chanukowej menory?

Odpowiedź jest wciąż taka sama: nienawiść wobec Żydów odbiera mu rozum. To doskonale widać na wideo pokazującym jego akcję gaszenia chanukowych świateł. 
Człowiek potrafiący inteligentnie formułować myśli i zdolny do racjonalnego rozumowania pod wpływem nienawiści do Żydów przeobraża się na naszych oczach w monstrualnego, bezwolnego i bezmyślnego golema, którym ta nienawiść całkowicie steruje. 

W roku 165 p.n.e. decydowały się losy świata.

Można z wielkim prawdopodobieństwem zakładać, że gdyby nie wybuchła rewolta religijnych Żydów przeciwko Grekom i zhellenizowanym Żydom, judaizm by nie przetrwał. Gdyby Grecy zwyciężyli i monoteizm przestałby istnieć, dalsze dzieje naszego kręgu kulturowego potoczyłyby się całkiem inaczej. Zabrakłoby źródła, z którego czerpało chrześcijaństwo. A nikt nie może zaprzeczyć, że bez chrześcijaństwa świat byłby całkiem inny. Dlatego uczestnictwo chrześcijan w obchodach Chanuki byłoby w pełni uzasadnione.

Od tysięcy lat trwa wielki kulturowy konflikt. Ścierają się dwie potężne koncepcje człowieka i świata. Pojedynek gigantów. I nagle na scenie zjawia się na ułamek chwili poseł Braun, wyłącznie po to, by pokazać w polskim Sejmie, że nic z tego wszystkiego nie zrozumiał.

Co gorsze, sam swoim czynem stwarza kolejne golemy – swoich bezmyślnych zwolenników i naśladowców. Na przykład nastolatków, którzy w ostatni czwartek przewrócili świecznik chanukowy stojący na ulicy Oławskiej we Wrocławiu.

Jednak najważniejsze w tym wszystkim jest coś innego: erupcja solidarności z Grzegorzem Braunem w mediach społecznościowych.

W ostatniej dekadzie napisałem wiele artykułów ostrzegających przed nadużywaniem oskarżeń o antysemityzm. Przed wykorzystywaniem ich bez rzeczywistego uzasadnienia jako pałki na politycznych przeciwników.

Gdy oskarżenia o antysemityzm są bzdurne, antysemityzm zaczyna być uważany za bzdurę.

Pasterz z bajki Ezopa, który woła „wilki, wilki atakują!”, gdy wilków nie ma, nie zostanie wysłuchany, gdy wilki się pojawią.

Teraz jest właśnie ten moment.
Wcale mnie nie cieszy, że to przewidziałem i miałem rację.

Troubling poll numbers among young voters point to a future where American exceptionalism ends and Jew-hatred is mainstreamed.

It was just one result among a blizzard of other poll results in a single survey. But one data point in the Harvard/Harris monthly survey of public opinion not only jumped out at observers like a five-alarm fire but also called into question the future security of American Jewry. Amid many other questions, the pollster asked a random sample of 2,034 registered voters the following question: “Do you think that Jews as a class are oppressors and should be treated as oppressors, or is that a false ideology?”

The question may have been loaded, and its results are, at least to some extent, contradicted by the answers to some of the other questions in the survey. But the fact that 67% of participants ages 18 to 24 responded that Jews are “oppressors” is deeply shocking though hardly surprising. If that proves an accurate assessment of opinion among generations that will lead the nation in the future, then it also means that the assumption on the part of many Jews that “it can’t happen here”—based on the idea of American exceptionalism setting it apart from other Western nations—will be proven wrong.

A belief that Jews are ‘oppressors’

The numbers in the poll contrast the markedly different results from other age groups. The older one gets, the more likely the respondent was to correctly label talk of Jewish oppressors as a “false ideology.” Those aged 25 to 34 answered 56% to 44% that it was false. Those aged 35 to 44 gave a 64% to 35% majority to the “false ideology” answer with those aged 45 to 54, 55 to 64, and 65 and older opposing this smear by 76%, 85% and 91%, respectively.

We know that those in the 18-24 age bracket have been subjected to indoctrination in intersectional and critical race theory myths so prevalent in the American educational system. These toxic ideas don’t merely heighten racial divisions, but identify Jews and Israel as possessing “white privilege” and “oppressors” of Palestinian “people of color.” That’s in spite of the fact that the conflict between Israelis and Arabs isn’t racial and the majority of Israeli Jews are themselves considered “people of color since they trace their origins to the Middle East or North Africa.

Those of college- and graduate-school age are particularly likely to have been exposed to these false ideas. They also have most likely been in classes where these ideas were treated not as controversial theories but as current orthodoxy that cannot be questioned, let alone disputed, without exposing oneself to the danger of being falsely labeled as a “racist.”

So, it figures that a question pushing those specific buttons would elicit an answer from this group that affirms the big lie about Jews being “oppressors.” The same factor explains other responses to the survey.

An equally shocking 60% of 18- to 24-year-olds also said that the Hamas atrocities of Oct. 7 were “justified by the grievances of the Palestinians.” Large majorities of every other age group said they were not justified. Fully 60% of the 18- to 24-year-olds also supported the smear that Israel is committing “genocide” in Gaza, and 76% of them bought into the fairy tale that Hamas “can be negotiated with to create peace rather than merely being committed to Israel’s destruction,” though sadly, larger numbers of older Americans were also willing to accept those false claims. And 53% of 18- to 24-year-olds think that college students should be free to advocate for the genocide of Jews.

It’s possible to exaggerate the significance of these results. Other answers from the 18-24 age category contradict them. Astonishingly, 70% think that Israel is trying to avoid killing civilians in Gaza and 58% of them think that Hamas would like to commit genocide in Israel. Another 62% also agree that Hamas is using civilians as human shields.

It should also be noted that the 18- to 24-year-olds are the only group in the poll that believes, by a 64%-36% majority, that Hamas is supported by the majority of Palestinians. In this case, it is the 18- to 24-year-olds who are right, and older Americans, who hold onto the myth that most of them oppose the terrorists, who are wrong, as polls of Palestinians affirm.

To put it in a broader context, the 18- to 24-year-olds also said they support the idea that “white people are oppressors” and non-whites “should be favored at universities and employment,” a stance opposed by other age groups.

Taken as a whole, the Harvard/Harris poll shows that young people are confused about most of the facts of the current war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. But even if you regard many of the questions as phrased in a manner to produce the answers the pollsters got, these numbers are in line with many other polls that show widespread support for woke ideology and hostility to Israel among the young.

Post-October 7 antisemitic surge

There was already an abundance of evidence showing that leftist ideologies divide humanity into two groups—oppressors and victims—and labeling Jews and Israel among the former was influencing American society. Antipathy for Israel and Zionism in most academic venues—rooted in neo-Marxist ideas about imperialism that go back to Soviet propaganda and the American New Left of the 1960s—was already a given in the second decade of the 21st century. But it became more obvious once the Black Lives Matter movement embraced anti-Israel smears and legitimized the intersectional myth that the Palestinian war to destroy Israel was analogous to the struggle for civil rights in the United States. Still, this link, which was politically problematic for those who wished to stay in sync with fashionable liberal causes, was dismissed by most mainstream Jewish groups as either untrue or insignificant.

But in the aftermath of the Hamas atrocities of Oct. 7, the surge in hatred for Israel and Jews that manifested itself in mass demonstrations on the streets of American cities and at college campuses made the reasons for this impossible to ignore any longer.

To the shock of many Jews and mainstream liberals of all faiths, including those who had always been critical of Israeli governments and sympathetic to the Palestinians, the largest mass slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust provoked a massive wave of sympathy for the killers and hostility to the victims.

The only way to explain that is a recognition that a generation of Americans has been educated to believe that Israel is a colonial implant in the Middle East where “whites” oppress people of color much in the same way they believe that America and the West is also institutionally racist. This ignores the fact that the Jews are the indigenous people of Israel not foreign colonizers.

The notion that America is an irremediably racist nation is itself a slander aimed at tearing down U.S. institutions that are themselves dedicated to advancing the cause of liberty and equality. In their place, the newly ascendant leftist establishment offers a woke catechism of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). That new faith opposes diversity of opinion, demands equity or equal outcomes determined by race as opposed to equal opportunity, and includes only certain approved minorities—but not Jews.

Foolishly, for some in the Jewish community, including the Anti-Defamation League, the answer to this problem is to get the Jews included in DEI. More of this racial division is bad for America in general. But it also won’t work because the intersectional mindset is based on Marxist ideas that demonize Israel and the Jews. Advocates for this ideology have already conquered academia, and are now doing the same in the corporate world and even the government due to the Biden administration’s embrace of DEI.

This is why so many people who consider themselves “progressives” and claim to oppose hate are chanting for Israel’s destruction (“from the river to the sea”) and the genocide of the Jews (“globalize the intifada”). It also explains why feminists refuse to condemn the rapes of Israeli women and girls (and in some instances, men) by Palestinians, and others tear down posters of Israeli kidnapping victims. They consider any attention diverted from the plight of Palestinians to be pro-Israel “propaganda,” dismissing or denying the atrocities that took place on Oct. 7.

This is outrageous in and of itself, as well as deeply troubling for American Jews, including those who weren’t previously particularly concerned about defending the security of Israel. But what even many who have focused on particular elements of this problem—whether feminist hypocrisy or the willingness of university administrators to either justify or refuse to oppose actions that endanger Jewish students—are missing is that it points to an even bigger problem.

Exceptionalism in peril

American Jews have prospered specifically because this country was not like any other place on earth, including the democracies of Western Europe. That was based not just on a constitutional system that prohibited discrimination on the basis of religion but on a value system that prioritized the rights of the individual and equal opportunity. And it is those specific values that are considered obsolete by the true believers in DEI and the intersectional left. If they succeed—and their long march through U.S. institutions has already been largely successful—then American exceptionalism is finished.

It’s not just that a generation of Americans is being exposed to these toxic concepts in schools that have been taken over by adherents of these ideologies, and therefore naturally more inclined to think ill of Israel and the Jews. It’s that their influence over U.S. culture and discourse will make the country a less friendly place for Jewish life. An America that is no longer different from the rest of the world simply cannot continue to be the freest and best place for Jews in the history of the Diaspora.
