Arab-Israeli Muslim woman runs for parliament with party opposing Palestinian independence

KIBBUTZ YEHIAM, Israel – An Arab-Israeli Muslim woman is running for a parliament seat as a member of a hard-line religious Jewish party aligned with the West Bank settler movement and that opposes Palestinian independence.

The bid by iconoclast Anett Haskia, a 45-year-old hairdresser and mother of three, comes after she gave a series of bombastic television interviews in support of Israel’s military this summer during its war against Hamas in Gaza. Now she is the lone Arab vying for a spot on the Jewish Home party’s list ahead of its January primary.

Arab citizens of Israel, who make up 20 percent of the country’s population, strongly identify with Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza. They generally oppose Israeli military actions, do not serve in the Israeli army and complain of deep-seated discrimination.

Haskia’s children, however, voluntarily enlisted in the Israeli army — including one son who served in an elite unit in Gaza during the summer war.

“Just because I was born in the Jewish state doesn’t mean a Jew is better than me,” Haskia recently told The Associated Press in Hebrew. “I sent the children to war, and nobody can tell me that I, Anett, the Arab, am second class.”

A self-described nonconformist, Haskia opposed her family’s wishes and broke cultural taboos by divorcing her husband and getting a collection of body piercings and tattoos.

Born in the mixed Arab-Jewish town of Akko in northern Israel, she lives with her children on an Israeli kibbutz, a rare Arab in one of Israel’s cooperative living communities. Her organization called Real Voice represents Arab high school graduates who want to serve in the Israeli army or in national service, like volunteering in hospitals. Such activities are required of Israel’s Jewish youth. The Israeli military puts the total of Israeli Arabs serving in its ranks at “several hundred.”

“On one hand they want to be soldiers or to do national service, and on the other hand they are scared of hostile attacks, not only from their families but from society,” Haskia said.

She opposes the Palestinian goal of establishing an independent state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, lands Israel won in the 1967 war from Jordan, saying it would only prolong the conflict with Israel. She encourages investment in Israel’s Arab community instead.

“Today, I can’t say that the settlements are a blow to Israel, no. The settlements are a blessing for Israel,” she said.

It remains unclear whether Haskia will win a seat in parliament. Opinion polls forecast the Jewish Home winning some 16 seats, which would make it one of the largest factions in the 120-member Knesset. But party officials say competition in the upcoming primary will be fierce, making it difficult for her to secure a place high enough on the party’s list to guarantee a seat.

Haskia says her unorthodox views have cost her some clients, while gaining her some unlikely supporters.

“Those who embrace me, the extremists who used to write me, ‘We hate Arabs’ or ‘We don’t want Arabs,’ today call me their sister,” she said.

Te wydarzenia, które obecnie wzmocnił kolejny brak oskarżenia w sprawie śmierci Erica Garnera w Nowym Jorku, ujawniają bezwstydne przywłaszczanie sobie przez tak zwane grupy pro-palestyńskie tragedii i walki innych ludzi, żeby demonizować Izrael.

Nie jest to nowość: kooptowanie walki innych od dawna jest taktyką demonizowania Izraela i utrwalania własnego wizerunku jako ofiary przez grupy, które przyklejają swoją sprawę do spraw całkowicie z nią niezwiązanych. Poczynając od wykorzystywania Holocaustu, walki o swoje prawa Indian amerykańskich, apartheidu RPA, do mitu, że walka ludu palestyńskiego jest odbiciem lustrzanym walki o prawa obywatelskie Afroamerykanów, nie ma takiej traumy historycznej, która nie zostałaby zarekwirowana dla celów propagandowych.

Mimo że twierdzenia, iż “walka” palestyńska jest paralelą do ruchu o prawa obywatelskie czarnych, zostały rozbite w puch przez działaczy tego ruchu, włącznie z Chlöe Valdry and Dumisani Washingtonem, antyizraelscy aktywiści nie ustają w robieniu takich porównań i przywłaszczaniu sobie walk Afroamerykanów w Stanach Zjednoczonych, twierdząc, że są równoznaczne z ich walką. Po śmierci Nelsona Mandeli widzieliśmy jak jego pamięć została porwana, by wspierać sprawę antyizraelską i raz jeszcze cierpienia pokoleń czarnych mieszkańców RPA w systemie apartheidu zostały użyte przez aktywistów antyizraelskich, by rościć sobie braterstwo w cierpieniu. Zastanawiam się nad selektywnym oburzeniem tych “aktywistów”, noszących kefije i wymachujących zmodyfikowanymi flagami arabskimi (znanymi jako flagi palestyńskie), krzyczących, że amerykańscy policjanci są rasistami i że USA nie zaznają pokoju dopóki nie nastanie sprawiedliwość. Twierdzą, że Palestyna stoi wraz z Ferguson za sprawiedliwością dla wszystkich, a szczególnie dla społeczności afro-amerykańskiej, ale są zdumiewająco niemi w kwestii rasizmu w Gazie i w całym świecie arabskim.

Obok systemowego rasizmu i częstych prześladowań tych, którzy należą do grup mniejszościowych w Gazie, pospolity rasizm jest endemiczny. W listopadzie 2013 r. Asma Al-Ghoul pisała w „Al-Monitor”, „Hej, czekolada”, „Hej, cappuccino”, „Hej, Galaxy [marka czekolady]”, „Hej, brązowy” i „Hej, czarny” są żartobliwymi, popularnymi zawołaniami w Gazie, kiedy przechodzi mężczyzna, kobieta lub dziecko afrykańskiego pochodzenia. Czasami rasizm wyrażany jest bezsłownie, nienawistnymi spojrzeniami. Gazańczycy jednak wydają się nieświadomi własnego rasizmu.

Paris Suburb Grants Marwan Barghouti Honorary Citizenship

Terrorist mastermind of countless fatal attacks on Israelis ‘glorified’ in Aubervilliers, weeks after street naming in another Paris suburb.

After the Parisian suburb of Valenton in October named a street after Fatah arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti, now another suburb of the French capital Aubervilliers has followed suit, raising a furor by granting Barghouti “honorary citizenship” last weekend.

Responding to the Aubervilliers decision, members of the Jewish community contacted the municipality and demanded that it reconsider, noting “this is an unthinkable decision, don’t give a hand to glorifying a despicable murderer.”

Barghouti is currently serving five life sentences in Israeli prison for his role in planning suicide terror attacks, and is widely believed to have masterminded the second intifada which claimed thousands of Israeli lives from 2000 to 2005. He has continued inciting terrorism from his jail cell.

“We call on you to act immediately to cancel the decision to grant Marwan Barghouti honorary citizenship,” said the Jewish leaders. “If not for justice and reason, if not for the memory of the terror victims, do it for the values of France.”

“Marwan Barghouti is not a hero worthy of honor, but rather a lowly terrorist murder worthy of denunciation by all people and governments who consider themselves liberal and enlightened,” concluded the message.

As noted, Valenton recently named a street after Barghouti, and at the naming ceremony mayor Françoise Baud called Barghouti “the face of the unwavering resistance of the Palestinian people against the occupation, the crimes, the destruction, the apartheid and the colonization perpetrated by the Israeli government.”

Baud – who runs the suburb like a commune and is a member of the French Communist Party – also said he intends to launch a “twin city” program with the Arab town of Balata in Samaria.

MK Yoni Chetboun, who at the time served as Chairman of the Knesset Caucus for Israel in France as a member of Jewish Home before splitting with the party and joining Eli Yishai’s Ha’am Itanu, wrote to Baud to complain.

“To bestow your honors upon a murderer like Barghouti is nothing short of moral bankruptcy. This is an unfortunate decision that contradicts the (values of) morality and justice which are the foundation of the French Republic,” said Chetboun, who himself hails from France.

“Is this the face of France, which claims to be the capital of Freedom and Justice in the Western world?” asked Chetboun.
