‘A Step Toward Eradicating Antisemitism on Campus’: George Washington University Ends Partnership with Middle East Studies Association

George Washington University (GW) will ends its partnership with the Middle East Studies Association (MESA), an academic professional organization that has widely endorsed boycotting Israeli academic institutions, a university spokesperson told The Algemeiner on Tuesday.

“GW and MESA agreed to enter into a four-year partnership that has run its course, and we are now parting ways amicably,” the university said in a statement.

The agreement between the two organizations is set to expire by the end of 2023.

MESA’s relationship with George Washington University — established in 2019 under a memo of understanding — netted the organization numerous benefits, including the relocation of its headquarters to GW Elliot School of International Affairs Institute for Middle East Studies (IMES), free office space, and unfettered access to GW’s academic and logistic resources. While the university cited no specific reason for declining to renew its relationship with MESA, it joins nearly a dozen other schools that disaffiliated with the organization after its members voted endorse the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement in 2022.

MESA’s losses have been substantial, with Middle East centers at schools such as Columbia University, University of Chicago, Harvard University, New York University, and Brandeis University being removed from its list of institutional partners. Other Ivy League and elite institutions, including Yale University and Stanford University, remain on the list, however.

In May, attorneys from the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law wrote to George Washington University president Mark S. Wrighton, explaining that sustaining a relationship with MESA violated the university’s own academic freedom guidelines and anti-BDS policy and, as well, undermined the wellbeing of Jewish students on campus. The letter, authored by L. Rachel Lerman and Deena Margolies, cited a study showing that the presence of pro-BDS faculty on campus increases the likelihood that an antisemitic incident will take place on campus. Lerman and Margolies also noted that antisemitic activity at GW recently prompted a federal investigation by the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR).

On Tuesday, Asaf Romirowsky, who serves as executive director of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East (SPME) and Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) told The Algemeiner that MESA’s entrance into politics ruined its standing as an academic organization.

“MESA has fully endorsed BDS, which is antisemitic, and the fact GW is removing an institution that does not uphold its academic standard and to my mind is also racist, is a positive,” Romirowsky said. “There are still a lot of problems within the Middle East Studies at GW, but I think this is a key move to show that MESA is no longer considered to be scholarly and that GW recognizes that.”

Sabrina Soffer, a third-year George Washington University student and incoming fellow for Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA), said she hopes “the break between MESA and GW is a step toward eradicating antisemitism on campus and helping Jewish students taking Middle East studies courses feel more comfortable.”

She added, “I look forward to seeing how this will impact classroom environments and lead to creating forums in which students can learn in a balanced manner and engage in dispassionate dialogue on important issues.”

Launched in 2005, the BDS campaign opposes Zionism — a movement supporting the Jewish people’s right to self-determination — and rejects Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish nation-state. It seeks to isolate the country comprehensively with economic, political, and cultural boycotts.

The campaign has been widely condemned by Jewish leaders worldwide, including major American Jewish organizations, for rejecting Jewish rights and trafficking in antisemitic tropes, while it has been advanced by anti-Zionist activists and supporters as a vehicle to advance Palestinian human rights.

MESA’s endorsement of BDS elicited criticism from professors across the country and prompted New York University and Brandeis University to explicitly denounce the decision. Florida State University disaffiliated with MESA before the vote took place.

MESA is not the only academic organization to express support for BDS. On Monday, the American Anthropological Association (AAA) announced that its members voted overwhelmingly to approve a resolution —which cited MESA’s support for BDS — calling for a full academic boycott of Israeli academic institutions.

Netanyahu to NBC: Apartheid’s hogwash, real danger is ethnic cleansing of Jews

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the charge that Palestinians live in an apartheid-like situation in the West Bank, telling NBC that the real danger in that region is the ethnic cleansing of Jews.

“It’s hogwash,” Netanyahu told NBC correspondent Rafael Sanchez in an interview published on Tuesday when quizzed about apartheid allegations.

“The whole idea of… ethnic cleansing this what we’re talking about,” Netanyahu said. He attacked those who believe that the evacuation of West Bank settlements is necessary for peace.

There are those who say that “we should get rid of the Jews because otherwise, we can’t have peace,” Netanyahu said.

Such statements are akin to “saying to me that the million and more Israeli citizens who are Arabs should be kicked out because we can’t have peace unless we have a cleansed state.”

In the end, he said, Israelis and Palestinians are “going to have to live together in creative arrangements.”

The majority of Israelis “do not want Israel to simply walk out from Judea Samaria, the so-called West back because we tried it,” Netanyahu said. He pointed to the entrenchment of the Iranian proxy Hezbollah in southern Lebanon after Israel’s unilateral withdrawal there in 2000. Hamas, which is also an Iranian-backed proxy, took over Gaza a year after Israel pulled out Netanyahu said.

“Any peace arrangement would have Israel responsible for security because it’s a tiny area, Netanyahu said, even though that means less than full sovereignty for the Palestinians.

“If we just give that sovereign power of security to the Palestinians right next to us,” then Iran moves in, Netanyahu said.

Why Israel isn’t an apartheid state

The absence of a Palestinian military does not mean that there is an apartheid system, Netanyahu said in reference to the West Bank. 

It’s a region that is divided between the Palestinian Authority which controls areas A and B and the IDF which has military and civilian control of Area C. Palestinians living in the region can vote for the Palestinian Authority but have no voting rights in sovereign Israel. 

Palestinians “can vote for their own parliament. They have their own flag, their own anthem, their own administration. “The one thing they shouldn’t have control is control over is security because security means that they’ll fall prey to terrorism and we’ll fall prey to Iran’s terrorist proxies,” Netanyahu said.

He dismissed the importance of extremist statements by some members of the government such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who heads the Religious Zionist Party and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir who heads the Otzma Yehudit Party.

“A lot of these statements have been walked back… They’re changing their tune and more importantly, it’s not what we say, it’s what we do,” Netanyahu said.

He pointed to a decision his security cabinet took earlier this summer to prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority, a move which has the support of eight out of 10 cabinet members.

“It’s the actions that count and the words well, I don’t control the words,” Netanyahu, but he said that those words were “changing as we go along.”

Palestyńskie obozy letnie: szkolenie do mordowania Żydów

Podczas gdy dzieci w wieku szkolnym na całym świecie cieszą się letnimi wakacjami uprawiając sport i bawiąc się, dzieci palestyńskie są uczone i szkolone, jak walczyć z Izraelem i Żydami.

Indoktrynacja i pranie mózgów palestyńskich dzieci nie jest niczym nowym. Przywódcy palestyńscy wychowują pokolenie po pokoleniu na nienawiści do Izraela i Żydów. To podżeganie od dziesięcioleci dzieje się w palestyńskich przedszkolach, szkołach, uniwersytetach, meczetach, mediach, a nawet w krzyżówkach. To dlatego badania opinii publicznej wciąż pokazują, co nie jest zaskoczeniem, że Palestyńczycy popierają radykalne poglądy i popierają terroryzm przeciwko Izraelowi.

Od ponad dziesięciu lat wspierane przez Iran grupy terrorystyczne, Palestyński Islamski Dżihad i Hamas, organizują letnie obozy dla tysięcy uczniów w całej Strefie Gazy. Obozy te służą jako miejsca wpajania ekstremistycznej ideologii, która gloryfikuje dżihad (świętą wojnę), terroryzm i walkę zbrojną przeciwko Izraelowi w celu “wyzwolenia Palestyny od rzeki [Jordan] do Morza [Śródziemnego]”.

Obozy zapewniają również szkolenie wojskowe, takie jak ćwiczenia z nożami i bronią palną; walki wręcz, marsze i inne ćwiczenia fizyczne. Dzieci wystawiają też sztuki teatralne i odgrywają sceny walki i pojmania izraelskich żołnierzy lub strzelania rakietami na izraelskie miasta.

Rekrutacja i rejestracja na obozy letnie są przeprowadzane za pośrednictwem stron internetowych i mediów społecznościowych Hamasu i Palestyńskiego Islamskiego Dżihadu oraz w stoiskach obsługiwanych przez członków obu grup w meczetach i innych miejscach publicznych w całej Strefie Gazy. Wysocy rangą funkcjonariusze Hamasu i Palestyńskiego Islamskiego Dżihadu regularnie uczestniczyli w ceremoniach otwierania i ukończenia obozów, podczas których wygłaszali przemówienia.

8 lipca Hamas rozpoczął letnie obozy na rok 2023, w których udział wzięło ponad 100 tysięcy chłopców i dziewcząt. Tegoroczne obozy letnie odbywają się pod hasłem Tarcza Jerozolimy, co sugeruje, że grupa terrorystyczna zamierza wykorzystać dzieci w walce z Izraelem. Dzieci są szkolone, by przeprowadzać ataki terrorystyczne i służyć jako żywe tarcze w dżihadzie przeciwko Izraelowi. Uczy się ich, że są rekrutowani do udziału w bitwie o “wyzwolenie” Jerozolimy. Nie trzeba dodawać, że Palestyńczycy nie uznają praw i historii Żydów w Jerozolimie.

W czerwcu 2022 r. premier Autonomii Palestyńskiej Mohammad Sztajjeh zaprzeczył jakimkolwiek śladom żydowskiej historii w Jerozolimie:

“Jesteśmy na obrzeżach wiecznej stolicy, klejnotu w koronie, miejsca, w którym spotykają się niebo i ziemia, kwiatu wszystkich miast, obiektu tęsknoty serc wierzących muzułmanów i chrześcijan, którzy przybywają do niego, aby się modlić w meczecie Al-Aksa i przejść się Via Dolorosa, by pomodlić się w Bazylice Grobu Pańskiego, która była świadkiem podpisania paktu Umar, w którym kalif Umar zobowiązał się wobec ludu Iliya [po arabsku Aelia] Capitolina/Jerozolima), że żaden muzułmanin nie będzie modlił się w ich kościele. [Jerozolima] ma zabytki kananejskie, rzymskie, islamskie i chrześcijańskie i należy tylko do nich i nikt inny nie ma tam żadnych śladów”.

Szef Wyższego Komitetu Hamasu ds. Obozów Letnich, Chaled Abu Askar, powiedział podczas konferencji prasowej w Asdaa Entertainment City w Gazie, niedaleko Chan Junis:

“Spotykamy się dzisiaj w mieście Asdaa, które zawiera symulacje wielu charakterystycznych punktów Jerozolimy, by ogłosić rozpoczęcie naszych letnich obozów, obozów tarczy Kuds [Jerozolimy]. Zapewnijmy świat, że miasto Jerozolima, ze swoimi świętościami, jest kompasem każdego wolnego i honorowego Palestyńczyka”.

Abu Askar twierdził, że Hamasowi zależy na młodym pokoleniu i chętnie w nie inwestuje. Twierdził również, że młodzi Palestyńczycy są systematycznie atakowani w celu podważenia ich przekonań, zachowań, moralności i patriotyzmu. Kogo obwinia? Izrael oczywiście.

“Okupacja i jej kolaboranci pompują ogromne ilości pieniędzy i wysiłku, aby odwrócić pokolenie od przynależności do jej religii i ojczyzny” – powiedział. Urzędnik Hamasu zwrócił uwagę, że jego grupa nazwała swoje obozy Tarczą Jerozolimy “aby zaszczepić w sercach młodych ludzi wartość Jerozolimy i prawo Palestyńczyków do Świętego Miasta, oprócz promowania narodowej roli pokolenia wyzwoleńców i podnoszenia ich determinacji.”

Kiedy Hamas mówi o “wyzwoleniu”, wyraża pragnienie wyeliminowania Izraela, jak to wyraźnie stwierdzono w statucie Hamasu:

“Artykuł 11:
Islamski Ruch Oporu wierzy, że ziemia Palestyny była islamskim Wakf przez pokolenia i aż do Dnia Zmartwychwstania, nikt nie może się jej wyrzec ani jej części, ani porzucić jej ani jej części. Żaden kraj arabski ani związek wszystkich krajów arabskich, ani żaden arabski król ani prezydent, ani wszyscy razem, nie mają tego prawa, ani żadna organizacja ani wszystkie organizacje razem, czy to palestyńskie, czy arabskie, ponieważ Palestyna jest islamskim Wakf przez wszystkie pokolenia aż do Dnia Sądu Ostatecznego lub Zmartwychwstania.

“Artykuł 13:
Inicjatywy [pokojowe], tak zwane pokojowe rozwiązania i konferencje międzynarodowe w celu rozwiązania problemu palestyńskiego są sprzeczne z przekonaniami Islamskiego Ruchu Oporu. Bowiem wyrzeczenie się jakiejkolwiek części Palestyny oznacza wyrzeczenie się części religii; nacjonalizm Islamskiego Ruchu Oporu jest częścią jego wiary, ruch kształci swoich członków, aby przestrzegali jego zasad i wznosili sztandar Allaha nad swoją ojczyzną podczas walki w Dżihadzie: “Allah jest wszechmocny, ale większość ludzi nie jest świadoma”.

Podczas innej ceremonii w Strefie Gazy przewodniczący Komitetu Administracyjnego Rafah, Dżum’a Hassanein, powiedział, że “te obozy młodzieżowe mają na celu szkolenie pokolenia wyzwolenia i zwycięstwa”.

Dyrektor obozu letniego w Rafah, Muhammad Barhoum, powiedział, że obozy są częścią działalności Hamasu, która koncentruje się na [młodszym] pokoleniu “ze względu na jego znaczenie jako “pokolenia wyzwolenia i zwycięstwa “.

Rzecznik Hamasu, Abdel Latin Kanou, powiedział, że obozy letnie zorganizowane przez jego grupę w Strefie Gazy w tym roku stanowią ważny krok w budowaniu tego pokolenia, zaszczepiając w ich duszach status Jerozolimy i meczetu Al-Aksa oraz łącząc ich z ich “legalnym prawem do powrotu [do Izraela] i wyzwolenia”. Kanou stwierdził, że hasło Tarcza Jerozolimy ma na celu przygotowanie dzieci do “wyzwolenia Jerozolimy”.

W przeszłości Palestyński Islamski Dżihad organizował letnie obozy pod hasłem Zemsty Wolnych, w których uczestniczyły setki chłopców poniżej 17 roku życia.

Darwisz al-Gharabli, przywódca Palestyńskiego Islamskiego Dżihadu, powiedział podczas ceremonii rozdania dyplomów:

“Te obozy tworzą pokolenie, które jest zgodne z drogą dżihadu i oporu; wierzących w tę opcję i w to, że Palestyna jest centralną kwestią, a walka z Żydami jest aktem czci. Nasz dżihad przeciwko temu trwa na wszystkich arenach. Zapewniamy naszego wroga, że to pokolenie będzie nosić sztandar i stawiać opór ze wszystkich sił”.

W 2021 roku zbrojne skrzydło Hamasu, Brygady Izz al-din al-Kassam, zorganizowało letnie obozy pod hasłem Miecz Jerozolimy.

Według strony internetowej Brygad Izz al-Din al-Kassam, “celem obozów jest rozniecenie ognia dżihadu wśród pokolenia wyzwoleńców, zaszczepienie wartości islamskich i przygotowanie długo oczekiwanej armii do wyzwolenia Palestyny”.

Rzecznik letnich obozów Hamasu, Abu Bilal, powiedział, że obozy są tworzone “z powodu wiary w rolę młodych ludzi i poczucia odpowiedzialności za [młodsze] pokolenie”. Dodał, że “młodzi ludzie [zawsze] przeprowadzali operacje zbrojne i byli paliwem intifad i powstań”.

Zachodnie media, ONZ i większość polityków ignorują to powszechne wykorzystywanie dzieci przez Palestyńczyków. Następnym razem, gdy Palestyńczycy będą skarżyć się na zabijanie lub ranienie nieletnich podczas przeprowadzania ataków terrorystycznych na Izraelczyków, warto przypomnieć sceny z dziećmi w obozach letnich w Strefie Gazy, gdzie rozpoczyna się proces przekształcania ich w bojowników.

Nadszedł czas, aby społeczność międzynarodowa, a przede wszystkim organizacje praw człowieka, pociągnęła palestyńskich przywódców do odpowiedzialności za wykorzystywanie dzieci nieodłącznie związane z szkoleniem tych dzieci na “męczenników” w dżihadzie, mającym na celu zabijanie Żydów oraz za próby zniszczenia jedynego w regionie demokratycznego kraju.

Israeli vessel breaks through Moscow’s Black Sea grain blockade – report

An Israeli merchant ship that embarked from the Port of Ashdod Monday became the first vessel to openly defy Russia’s blockade of the Black Sea since they pulled out of a deal with Ukraine allowing the country to export grain from its ports in mid-July, Militarnyi reports.

Israeli vessel “Ams1” has seemingly ignored Russian threats and entered the Ukrainian branch of the Danube Monday afternoon, according to Ukrainian reports. It crossed the Black Sea on a direct route from Ashdod Port while the American aircraft “P8 Poseidon” provided aerial security, the report added. 

Ams1 was followed by four more vessels which have either anchored or will anchor in the Danube shortly.

Russia stepped away from the agreement in mid-July, arguing that demands to improve its own food and fertilizer exports had not been met, and that not enough Ukrainian grain had reached the poorest countries under the Black Sea deal.

Moscow’s Black Sea blockade

The Black Sea grain deal that Russia withdrew from two weeks ago was brokered by the UN and Turkey a year ago in an effort to combat a global food crisis worsened by Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine and Russia are among the largest grain exporters in the world.

Since Russia quit the deal and began attacking Ukrainian food-exporting ports on the Black Sea and Danube river, global wheat and corn futures have risen sharply.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had written to Putin on July 11 in a final effort to save the deal. He proposed Russia extend the agreement – with a daily limit of four ships traveling to Ukraine and four ships leaving – in return for connecting a subsidiary of Russia’s Agricultural Bank, Rosselkhozbank, to the SWIFT global payments system.

“With the termination of the Black Sea Initiative, the most vulnerable will pay the highest price,” Guterres told the UN Food Systems summit in Rome in late-July. “When food prices rise, everybody pays for it.”

African leaders pressed Russian President Vladimir Putin to renew the deal on the safe wartime export of Ukrainian grain at a Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg on Friday.

Gunman In Critical Condition Following Shooting Outside Memphis Jewish School

Authorities in Memphis, Tennessee, say an armed man tried gaining entry into a Jewish school and when he couldn’t get inside, he opened fire.

An unidentified white man who opened fire at the entrance to a Jewish school in Memphis, TN., on Monday is in hospital with critical injuries after he himself was shot by police officers at a nearby traffic stop.

Memphis police received an emergency call at 12.20 pm from the Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South after staff reported that an armed man was trying to gain entry to the building.

After failing to enter, the man fired several shots outside the school before fleeing in a maroon truck. A short time later, Memphis police officers found a vehicle matching the description and stopped the driver. The suspect got out of the truck with a gun in his hand and was shot by an officer, Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe told reporters. He was then taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation separately announced an investigation into the shooting at the request of District Attorney General Steve Mulroy.

Crowe praised the school’s security procedures for preventing a potentially deadly attack. The co-ed school caters to children from first through eighth grades.

“Thankfully, that school had a great safety procedure and process in place and avoided anyone being harmed or injured at that scene,” he said. “We cannot thank the people from Hebrew Academy enough for their vigilance and for their ability to get information to us.”

Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis said no injuries were reported at the school. Davis also thanked Memphis officers and those in nearby jurisdictions for bringing the suspect into custody.

Crowe added that it was “way too early in the investigation” to say if the suspect was trying to carry out a hate crime, although he appeared determined to cause injury.

“I think the suspect was going to harm somebody before the day was over and that our officers were able to intervene and protect the citizens,” Crowe said.
