Jewish Quarter of Warsaw Weeks before the German Invasion that Started World War II

   United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

In the Jewish quarter of Warsaw, Poland in June 1939, two men wave hands and argue, while others carry out their daily work. Men and young boys laugh and pose for the camera, while three elderly men shield their faces. This color film was shot by Chicago-based pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Gasul who toured Europe in the summer of 1939 to reconnect with Jewish communities like the one from his childhood in Latvia.
