Jewish Students Mustered A Rare Unity To Protest This Palestinian Activist

In a rare show of unity, Jewish students supportive of Israel at Northwestern University came together from different viewpoints Monday night to protest a convicted terrorist’s appearance on campus.

The protesters—about 100 students—included members of J Street U, the student arm of the dovish Israel lobby; Wildcats for Israel, a group more closely aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, and Hillel, the campus Jewish center.

Northwestern University’s president, Morton Schapiro, was also among those demonstrating outside the hall where Students for Justice in Palestine held an event whose speakers included Rasmea Odeh, who was convicted by a military court in Israel for a 1969 supermarket bombing that killed two students.

Dressed in black, the demonstrators held candles and carried placards with pictures of Edward Joffe and Leon Kanner, the two students killed in the bombing. Printed signs on other placards said, “May their memories be for a blessing.”

The protesters stood silently in two long rows outside Northwestern’s Tech building in suburban Evanston, where the campus SJP chapter was sponsoring an event to commemorate the Nakba—Arabic for “catastrophe”—a kind of counter-observance to mark the date on which Israel was established in 1948.

For Palestinians, the date marks the period during which approximately 700,000 Arabs were expelled from their homes by Israeli forces or fled, and thousands more were killed during the Israeli War for Independence. In 1998 Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat declared May 15 Nakba Day, a time of commemoration and protest in the Palestinian territories and Palestinian communities throughout the world.

But it was the appearance of Odeh, not the commemoration itself that sparked the protest. The Palestinian was released from Israeli prison after her conviction in a 1979 prisoner exchange. Her supporters maintain that her confession was extracted under torture and sexual assault. Many years later, the Israeli Supreme Court did find that the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic security agency, had, in fact, frequently tortured Palestinian prisoners. But there has been no confirmation of Odeh’s claim, and Israel continues to deny it.

“I know the narrative of her defenders,” said Michael Simon, the executive director of Northwestern Hillel. “We’re hesitant to say, point blank, ‘We invited a murderer.’ Her defenders dispute that. But there’s no dispute that she was a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.”

The PFLP, one of the constituent groups that makes up the Palestine Liberation Organization, was in the 1970s and 1980s a hardline Marxist-Leninist organization responsible for multiple attacks targeting civilians.

“In my book, she’s a terrorist,” Simon said. “We feel it is very disturbing for a student group to uplift this particular voice.” At the same time, Simon acknowledged careful consideration about the wisdom of publicly protesting the event.

“To bring a speaker of this notoriety is an attempt to gain a lot of attention,” he said. “We recognize that any response by us may provide them with publicity and attention, so we’re trying to be careful to calibrate our response.”

The demonstrators stood lined up outside the lecture hall, forming a sort of gauntlet for anyone who wanted to enter the building. Some students who were passing through just wanted to go to class. The Palestinian students on their way to the lecture, however, walked more slowly, wearing kafiyas as a sign of national pride.

In the United States, Odeh has become known as an activist on behalf of Arab immigrant women. After emigrating here from Jordan in 1994, following her prison release, she obtained a law degree and became associate director of the Chicago Arab American Action Network. But in 2013, Odeh was arrested for failing to disclose her imprisonment on her immigration form. This past March, she agreed to a plea deal that will strip her of her citizenship and force her to leave the country in exchange for not going to jail.

Nevertheless, the judge who sentenced her told the Detroit Free Press that he respected Odeh’s work in America. “I’m convinced she’s been involved in doing a lot of good work in helping Arab immigrant women,” he said. “She’s changed, she’s reformed.”

“Rasmea’s record speaks for itself,” said Marcel Khalil Hanna, one of the leaders of SJP. “The way Zionist organizations function is predictable. They’re very reactionary. This is an event to support someone who is fighting for her rights, and there is pushback.” He felt that the vigil by the Jewish students was disrespectful toward Palestinians, considering it was Nakba Day. “They frame it as supporting the sanctity of life,” he said, “but they show which lives they value.”

At the SJP event, Odeh’s speech was brief. She denounced what she called the “racist” American judicial system and spoke on behalf of the 1,500 Palestinian prisoners in the Israeli-occupied West Bank who have been on a hunger strike for the past month to demand better treatment.

“I am going to have to leave you all sometime in the next few months,” she told the crowd of approximately 50 students and guests from the community, “but I will continue to watch the U.S. Aside from Israel, this is the main front in the battle for Palestinian rights. You must continue to fight American Zionism.”

6 charged with incitement to hate after spewing anti-Semitic abuse on Munich bus

BERLIN (JTA) — Six people have been charged with incitement to hate after spewing anti-Semitic abuse at passengers on a Munich city bus.

Only an unmarried couple from Munich attempted to intervene in the weekend incident on a bus reportedly packed with some 40 passengers.

According to news reports, the alleged perpetrators are all from Munich and Ebersberg and range in age from 18 to 33. Police said witnesses reported the “most harmless” of the shouted slurs included “Juden raus!” — “Get rid of the Jews.”

Most of the passengers reportedly did nothing. After one woman addressed the group and asked them to stop, they aimed their abuse at her. Police said her boyfriend’s intervention prevented further escalation.

The bus driver stopped on the Donnersberger Bridge and called police, the Munich-based Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported. The six were apprehended, asked for identification and charged with incitement to hate and insulting passengers. Reportedly none of them were known
members of a right-wing radical group.

Bavaria has seen a rise in anti-Semitic criminality, with 176 anti-Jewish crimes reported in the state in 2016, a 33 percent increase over the previous year.

In Munich, the increase was 50 percent, to 37 incidents last year from 24 in 2015. All the perpetrators in those incidents came from a far-right extremist background.

Używają coraz bardziej wyrafinowanych środków, włącznie z wojną, terroryzmem, a ostatnio połączeniem wojny i terroryzmu ze starannie zaplanowanymi i wykonanymi napaściami dyplomatycznymi i poznawczymi, skierowanymi na zwolenników Izraela i na sam Izrael.

Niemniej głoszą, że Żydzi są Europejczykami (to nie wyjaśnia połowy ludności Izraela, których przodkowie nie żyli w Europie, ale nikogo to nie obchodzi) i że arabscy mieszkańcy ziemi Izraela byli tutaj od setek, wręcz tysięcy lat. Zaprzeczają żydowskiej historii i pochodzeniu z ziemi Izraela i „Palestyńczyków” fałszywie przedstawiają jako ofiary ucisku, wygnania i ludobójstwa, w ten sposób przywłaszczając sobie historyczne doświadczenie narodu żydowskiego.

Zaprzeczanie żydowskiemu pochodzeniu jest wszechobecne. Jaser Arafat powiedział, że nie było Świątyni Żydowskiej w Jerozolimie, a jego następca, Mahmoud Abbas, dołączył do niego, mimo olbrzymiej masy dowodów archeologicznych i historycznych na istnienie zarówno pierwszej, jak drugiej Świątyni. UNESCO, za namową członków arabskich, uchwaliła w 2016 r. rezolucję nazywając Wzgórze Świątynne tylko nazwą “Meczet Al Aqsa/Haram al Szarif”, jako próbę wymazania związków żydowskich z tym miejscem. Negocjator palestyński, Saeb Erekat, twierdził, że jest “dumnym synem Kanaajeczyków, którzy byli tutaj 5,5 tysiąca lat zanim Joszua bin Nun spalił miasto Jerycho”, w rzeczywistości jednak pochodzi z Haszymidów, którzy żyli w Arabii zanim przybyli do Izraela “wiele dziesięcioleci temu, ale nie stuleci ani tysiącleci”. Nakba, założenie państwa żydowskiego, w wyniku czego 650 tysięcy Arabów uciekło ze swoich domów, przedstawiana jest jako umyślne, masowe wygnanie, jako czystka etniczna pod lufami karabinów. Według historyka Benny’ego Morrisa, najbardziej chyba szanowanego autorytetu w tej sprawie, tylko niewielka liczba Arabów rzeczywiście była ewakuowana przymusowo, a większość uciekła przed wojną lub z powodu załamania się społeczności arabskiej po ucieczce ich przywódców. Nie było żadnego „wielkiego planu”, jak często twierdzą zwolennicy Palestyńczyków, by przeprowadzić czystkę etniczną Arabów. Nie trzeba dodawać, że oskarżenia o „ludobójstwo” nie zasługują na odpowiedź; populacja arabska wzrosła kilkukrotnie w Izraelu po 1948 r. i w Judei/Samarii/Gazie po 1967 r.

Proces ten obejmuje także inwersję rzeczywistości, w której Żydzi są oskarżani o to, co robili i robią – lub pragną zrobić – Palestyńczycy. Izrael jest oskarżany o czystkę etniczną, obieranie dzieci i cywilów za cel, ustanowienie reżimu apartheidu i o rasizm. W rzeczywistości jednak OWP, Hamas i Hezbollah są tymi, którzy umyślnie obierają za cel dzieci i cywilów i którzy z dumą ogłaszają, że kiedy zostanie ustanowiona „Palestyna”, nie będzie w niej żył ani jeden Żyd. Samoobrona izraelska jest nazywana „terroryzmem”, a media Hamasu i OWP informują o aresztowaniach rzeczywistych terrorystów jako o „porwaniach”. Terroryści palestyńscy, którzy – jak biblijny Amalek – zawsze wybierają najsłabszych, mówią o swych wyczynach jako o operacjach militarnych, nawet kiedy celem jest autobus szkolny.

Nasi wrogowie jeszcze bardziej niż tylko przeinaczaniem historii zajmują się systematyczną kradzieżą kulturową. „Jezus był Palestyńczykiem”, mówią, co jest całkowicie absurdalnym stwierdzeniem – czy mógł być muzułmaninem na siedem wieków przed Mahometem, czy nie był Żydem, czy mieszkańcy Judei byli przodkami Arabów nazywających siebie “Palestyńczykami” nie zaś dzisiejszych Żydów? Wszystko to jest nonsensowne, ale te zdania stają się memami.

Innym rodzajem inwersji rzeczywistości jest “moralna równoważność”, w której działania obu stron uważa sie za porównywalne i śmierć zamachowca-samobójcy jest rzekomo równie tragiczna jak śmierć jego ofiar.

Dzisiaj jest w Izraelu dzień upamiętnienia ofiar wojny i terroryzmu i zeszłego wieczoru widziałem wyjątkowo odrażający przejaw moralnej równoważności, w którym narracja palestyńska została przyswojona przez żydowskich ocalałych z arabskiej przemocy. Organizacja „byłych żołnierzy izraelskich i wojowników palestyńskich” o nazwie “Kombatanci dla pokoju” zorganizowała “Alternatywny Dzień Pamięci”:

Ceremonia Izraelsko-Palestyńskiego Dnia Pamięci, organizowana w wigilię Dnia Pamięci przez ostatnich jedenaście lat, przypomina nam, że wojna nie jest aktem losu, ale ludzkim wyborem. Ta ceremonia jest największą doroczną imprezą organizowaną przez ruch Kombatantów dla Pokoju. W ten szczególnie trudny dzień wzywamy obie strony, by przyznały ból i aspiracje tych, którzy żyją po drugiej stronie płotu, i by każdy z nas dążył do zapobieżenia kolejnej wojnie. Być może, podczas następnego Dnia Pamięci, nie trzeba będzie liczyć dodatkowych strat. Podczas ceremonii żałobnej rodziny izraelskie i palestyńskie mówiły o ich osobistym bólu.

Kombatanci dla Pokoju otrzymują znaczne finansowanie z Niemiec, Szwajcarii i Belgii, wśród innych źródeł zagranicznych. Według NGO Monitor, “Działalność Kombatantów dla Pokoju odzwierciedla silny związek z palestyńskim programem i narracją, obwiniając za konflikt głównie ‘okupację’”.

Choć nie wątpię, że palestyńska matka, której dziecko zostało zastrzelone, kiedy próbowało pchnąć nożem przypadkowego Żyda lub rzucało bombę zapalającą, odczuwa ból podobny do bólu żydowskiej matki dziecka zadźganego lub spalonego w takim ataku, myśl, że zarówno ofiara, jak sprawca zasługują na uhonorowanie w dzień pamięci, jest obsceniczna. Najwyraźniej kilku żydowskich Izraelczyków uważało, że jest wystarczająco obsceniczna, by próbować przerwać te imprezę; i choć jestem przeciwny zakłócaniu pokojowej mowy, niezależnie od tego, jak jest głupia lub obraźliwa, z pewnością rozumiem, o co im chodziło.

Połączona waga decyzji UNESCO, propagandy arabskiej i, tak – wywrotowych działań Izraelczyków o na ogół dobrych intencjach – osłabia państwo w kraju i za granicą. Narracja palestyńska wydaje się nie do uwierzenia dla tych z nas, którzy choćby bardzo pobieżnie znają historię żydowską, ale wielu ludzi w nią wierzy, także w podobno rozwiniętych krajach.

Jest ironiczne, że ci sami ludzie, którzy oskarżają nas o kulturowe przywłaszczenia falafla, są największymi na świecie złodziejami historycznego i kulturowego dziedzictwa.

Joanna Lumley condemns ‘appalling’ cultural boycotts of Israel

Celebrated actress and campaigner says she ‘hates barriers, walls and boycotts’, whilst speaking at a Jewish charity event.

National treasure Joanna Lumley has condemned cultural boycotts of Israel as “appalling”.
The celebrated actress and campaigner spoke to the Jewish News after addressing charity Tikva’s annual dinner in central London.

“I hate barriers, I hate walls, I hate boycotts,” she said when asked about cultural boycotts. “I think it’s appalling. I would never join in such a boycott.” Music stars from around the world are frequently targeted by BDS campaigners, urging them to cancel planned concerts in the country.

Lumley, who will receive the Bafta fellowship this weekend, said one of her “greatest heroes in life” is Daniel Barenboim, the Israeli conductor who established with Edward Said the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra to bring together young Israeli, Palestinian and Arab musicians.

The Absolutely Fabulous actress earlier delighted more than 200 guests at the event, regaling tales of her 40-year career from starting as a model to becoming a Bong Girl and starring in the hit sitcom opposite Jennifer Saunders. She also successfully led a campaign for Gurkha veterans who served in the British Army to have the right to settle in the UK.

The event raised £1.1 million was raised for the charity’s children’s homes in Odessa, Ukraine, with the funds going towards continuing the search for at-risk Jewish children in the region. Tikva also operates schools and a university in the area.

“Part of the reason I wanted to be here was the extraordinariness of the people I’m hearing about tonight, the person who started it all and you all being here to support it,” she said. “I think the point of life is actually to help other people and to make life better. What you are doing here is something that I admire you and adore you for.” What started with one man’s vision to help a handful of children now helps hundreds, she said. “These children have had their lives completely given back to them.”

The event saw a powerful animated film about one young girl’s true-life story of rescue and was addressed by Rachel Grigoriva, who studied english language and world literature at Tikva’s accredited university. “You have given me my education, my Judaism, my community and my future.”
