Israel appreciates the “changes” in India’s recent voting pattern at UN institutions, the Jewish state’s New Delhi envoy told The Hindu in an interview published this past weekend.

“In the last couple of years, we have seen a shift in various votes (by India) which reflects the present improvement in relations,” Israeli Ambassador to India Daniel Carmon said. “I would not over exaggerate this as a trend, each side has their declared positions and it is not a zero-sum game. India says they are committed to the Palestinian cause, to the Arab cause, and they have good relations with Israel that they intend to pursue. We appreciate this stand, and at the UN, we can see it too.”

As reported by The Algemeiner, Israel and India currently enjoy a burgeoning relationship, particularly in the defense field.

India, The Hindu noted, abstained from a vote on an anti-Israel UN Human Rights Council resolution in the summer of 2015. This past June, India voted in favor of putting Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon in charge of the UN Legal Committee. And in October, India abstained from a vote on a UNESCO resolution that ignored the Jewish people’s ties with Jerusalem holy sites.

An Indian government official told The Hindu that India had a “very balanced” approach to Israel-Palestinian conflict-related votes in international forums.

“We vote for Palestine, but also for Israel on some of their initiatives at the UN,” the official said.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 1992 establishment of full diplomatic relations between Israel and India and there have been reports that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the Jewish state to celebrate the occasion.

In November, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin traveled to the subcontinent, just over a year after his Indian counterpart President Pranab Mukherjee toured Israel.

Jason Isaacson — the American Jewish Committee’s director of government and international affairs — told The Hindu in an interview published on Monday that Mukherjee’s October 2015 trip represented India’s “coming out of the closet” regarding its relationship with Israel.

“There is less hesitation in India on embracing Israel,” Isaacson said. “It started before Mr. Modi, and it is a bipartisan position in India, but it is more public under Mr. Modi that Israel is a natural ally of India and there are mutual benefits.”

Israel halts $6 million to UN to protest settlements vote

Jewish state cuts portion of its regular contributions, totaling more than $40 million, allocated ‘to anti-Israel bodies,’ such as UNRWA.

Israel announced Friday it is cutting approximately $6 million in its annual dues to the United Nations this year to protest last month’s Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlements as “a flagrant violation under international law.”

Israel’s UN Mission said the amount represents the portion of Israel’s contribution to the UN’s regular budget totaling more than $40 million allocated “to anti-Israel bodies.”

It named the UN agency for Palestinian refugees known as UNRWA, The Division for Palestinian Rights, the committee investigating Israeli practices affecting Palestinian human rights, and information programs on “the Question of Palestine.”

“It is unreasonable for Israel to fund bodies that operate against us at the UN,” Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon said. “The UN must end the absurd reality in which it supports bodies whose sole intent is to spread incitement and anti-Israel propaganda.”

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, asked to comment, said: “We have not been informed.”

Israel’s UN Mission said the cut in funding is the first in a series of steps under consideration by the Foreign Ministry and the mission in reaction to the recent Security Council resolution.

The Obama administration’s decision to abstain and allow the UN Security Council to approve a long-sought resolution condemning Israeli settlements as an obstacle to a two-state solution was a sharp rebuke to a longstanding ally and a striking rupture with past US vetoes.

Israel’s UN Mission said it will move forward on additional initiatives “aimed at encouraging structural change within the UN with the ultimate goal of ending anti-Israel activities” after Donald Trump becomes president of the United States on Jan. 20.

The president-elect has criticized President Barack Obama’s green light for the Security Council condemnation.
On Thursday, the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a bipartisan resolution rebuking the United Nations for criticizing Israeli settlements and declaring unwavering support for Israel. The non-binding resolution insists that the United States reject any future UN actions that are similarly “one-sided and anti-Israel.”

Mike Huckabee visits Knesset, says Israel cannot divide Jerusalem or withdraw from territories, anti-Israel activity at UN motivated by hate

 

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee slammed UN Security Council Resolution 2334 as an act of hate and contempt against the State of Israel and criticized Secretary of State John Kerry’s speech against construction in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria during a visit to the Knesset Tuesday.

The Knesset visit was arranged by MK Miki Zohar (Likud).

“I’m not here today to in any way suggest a course of action for Israel. That’s the sovereign duty of a sovereign state to decide for itself,” Huckabee said in the Knesset. “John Kerry’s speech last week was without any historical precedent at all. No perspective. He made the ridiculous and irrational statement that Israel can either be a Jewish State, or it can be a democracy, but it can’t be both…Mr. Secretary, it is both.”

He accused Kerry of fundamentally misunderstanding Israel. “The only way that statement makes any sense at all is if you take faith and religion out of the equation of who Israel is.”

“Be happy about your history. Be proud. Your history tells you where you came from and where you are going. The UN Resolution was an act of hatred and contempt. Very rarely are Syria, North Korea, Russia, etc. condemned. Israel is condemned far more. There are more condemnations in the UN when Israel builds houses than when Iran builds a nuclear reactor,” Huckabee said.

“The world doesn’t hate you because of where you are, but because of what you are – and especially because of who you are. The Muslim world is far larger and there is no justification for Israel to withdraw from the territories. To divide Jerusalem is like asking King Solomon to divide the baby in half.” he added.

“I hope that [President-elect] Donald Trump will not let the people in Washington draw him into the swamp of inactivity. There is a saying: Do it big or go home. You need to do it big, and you are already home,” he said in conclusion.

Huckabee’s mission to Israel was led by the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce and its Executive Public Policy Committee – Dr. Joseph Frager, Odeleya Jacobs, Dr. Paul Brody, and Duvi Honig- along with a delegation of prominent businessmen and women.

Fatah Official Sultan Abu Al-Einein: Transfer of U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem Will Lead to Renewed Bloodshed
Sultan Abu Al-Einein of the Fatah Central Committee warned that any “act of stupidity” by the new U.S. administration would “ignite the Palestinian territories.” In an interview with the Egypt-based Alghad TV on January 1, Abu Al-Einein said that moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem would lead to renewal of bloodshed, for which the U.S. and Israel would bear responsibility.

Sultan Abu Al-Einein: We must prepare for a new confrontation with the new US administration, which has declared, clearly and audaciously, that Israel and its settlements are legitimate and legal, and has sent a delegation in order to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. I believe that any American act of stupidity will ignite the Palestinian territories, and that the US administration, along with the Israeli arrogance in continuing its settlement activity, will bear responsibility for the return of the bloodshed in the Palestinian territories.
