Wiesenthal Center Condemns Use of Proposed New Polish Law to Blatantly Intimidate Holocaust Researchers

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today strongly condemned an attempt by Polish prosecutors to use a proposed new law to threaten an eminent historian with three years imprisonment. Mark Weitzman, the Director of Government Affairs of the Center said, “Reports that Polish prosecutors in Katowice have rejected an initial opinion dismissing charges brought against renowned Princeton historian Jan Gross for ‘defaming the Polish nation’ and are continuing the case are highly alarming. Professor Gross, (pictured) whose highly acclaimed groundbreaking book, Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne, Poland on the killings of Jews in Jedwabne by their Polish neighbors was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2001, now faces a renewed investigation that bears all the hallmarks of a political witch-hunt.”

Weitzman, who also chairs the Committee on Antisemitism and Holocaust Denial of the thirty-one nation International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), of which Poland is a member, added, “This action is all the more disturbing because Poland, as a member of the IHRA, has committed itself to the Stockholm Declaration of 2000, which includes a ‘commitment to encourage the study of the Holocaust in all its dimensions’. By taking this drastic step, the government of Poland is apparently attempting to intimidate researchers and to rewrite history through a political lens. While this had been customary under Communist rule, it is a clear departure from the vigorous and healthy debate that had been occurring in Poland since independence.”

“Any attempt by the Polish government to stifle or distort historical research on the Holocaust through legal or other means must be rejected, and the right to pursue historical research free from government interference must be clearly affirmed,” Weitzman concluded.

Premiera książki Wojtka Mazana o Szmulu Muszkiesie, przedwojennym fotografie z Ostrowca

29 października o 16.00 w Pracowni Otwartej „Kontrola Jakości” przy alei Solidarności 9 odbyla sie promocja książki i otwarcie wystawy Wojtka Mazana, „Szmul Muszkies – fotograf profesjonalny. Portret ostrowczan lat 30. XX wieku wykonany w zakładzie fotograficznym „Rembrandt”. W wydarzeniu, poza prezydentem miasta i autorem książki, weźmie udział rodzina Szmula Muszkiesa z USA, Brazylii i Izraela, w tym córka fotografa, Ruth Webber.

-W sumie w książce znajduje się ponad 120 zdjęć wykonanych przez Muszkiesa – opowiada Wojtek, autor książki. -Stanowią swoisty rodzaj zbiorowego portretu ostrowczan sprzed wojny, choć niepełny, bo brakuje w nim ostrowieckich Żydów, których reprezentantem był właśnie Szmul Muszkies.

Tak się złożyło, że promocja książki przypada w 74. rocznicę likwidacji ostrowieckiego getta w 1942 roku. Nic więc dziwnego, że spaja historię naszego miasta. Projektantką graficzną książki jest Ewa Behrens, konsultacji naukowej udzielił Waldemar Ryszard Brociek, a tłumaczeniami zajął się Łukasz Kotyński. Książka, nakładem 500 sztuk, wydana została przez Stowarzyszenie Kulturotwórcze Nie z tej Bajki.

Przypadkowe znalezisko

Szmul Muskies

Ponad rok Wojtek Mazan natknął się na ślad fotografa ukrywającego się pod nazwą „Rembrandt”. W tym samym czasie, z okazji 70. rocznicy wyzwolenia obozu w Auschwitz, w Internecie pojawiło się znane zdjęcie dzieci w obozowych pasiakach za drutami kolczastymi, na którym sfotografowane zostały trzy dziewczynki pochodzące z Ostrowca. Jedną z nich była Ruth Webber z domu Muszkies.

„Wówczas przypomniałem sobie małe portretowe zdjęcie, które znalazłem w opuszczonym domu. Na jego odwrocie znajdowała się pieczątka: Mistrzowski zakład fotograficzny Sz.Muszkies Ostrowiec, ul. Iłżecka 16” – pisze we wstępie do swojej ksiażki Wojtek.

Później wszystko potoczyło się już szybko… Wojtek odnalazł internetowy wywiad z Ruth Webber z lat 90., w którym wspomniała, że jej ojciec był profesjonalnym fotografem.

„W tym momencie wszystko stało się jasne: to Muszkies był „Rembrandtem”! Nawiązałem kontakt z mieszkającą za oceanem Susan Webber, córką Ruth Webber, a wnuczką Szmula Muszkiesa. W Toronto spotkałem się ze starszą córką Muszkiesa, Helen Mueller, czyli Chają. Rozmawialiśmy po polsku, mimo że minęło już blisko siedemdziesiąt lat odkąd wraz z rodziną opuściła Polskę. Mogłem już zrekonstruować historię życia Szmula Muszkiesa i jego najbliższej rodziny, ale także zobaczyć zdjęcia ukazujące jego samego. W rodzinnym zbiorze jest zdjęcie przedstawiające grupę muzyków i uczestników koncertu zorganizowanego w 1942 roku w ostrowieckim getcie. To prawdopodobnie ostatnia fotografia, jaką Muszkies wykonał w życiu.”

British Jewish Leaders Outraged by London University Anti-Israel Protest Which Required Police Intervention

Leaders of Britain’s Jewish community expressed outrage on Friday after a lecture on Thursday night by a former IDF soldier at a London university was stormed by protesters, resulting in the arrival of the police.

Marie van der Zyl, vice president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, said in a statement, “We deplore the aggressive and intimidating protests which disrupted a student event in UCL (University College London)…It is disgraceful that in a society which values free speech, students at a top UK university cannot host an open event without being harassed.”

Van Der Zyl also referred to the anti-Israel protesters — who trapped students and visitors inside a lecture hall during the talk by Israeli peace activist Hen Mazzig — as a “hate-filled mob supporting the worst kind of extremism in the Middle East,” who “serve only to bully and threaten.”

The Board said it will be taking its concerns to the government and called on UCL “to initiate a strong disciplinary process against the perpetrators.”

That message was echoed by the Israeli Embassy in London, writing in a statement posted on Twitter: “We are concerned by the shameful violence recorded at last night’s event at UCL aimed at preventing an Israeli speaker from engaging students. We are confident the university will be investigating those responsible.”

Footage of the event, which was co-organized by UCL Friends of Israel and CAMERA on Campus, shows officers warning people not to leave the lecture room without police escort, as the environment outside was too hazardous. On the video, protesters are heard shouting slogans like, “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free.” As the audience was led out of the lecture hall, they were followed by chants of, “Shame! Shame! Shame!”
